2 Scratchboard is a technique where drawings are created using sharp tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black India ink. Scratchboard can be used to yield highly detailed, precise and even textured artwork.

8 History Modern scratchboard originated in the 19th century in Britain and France. As printing methods developed, scratchboard became a popular medium for reproduction because it replaced wood, metal and linoleum engraving. It allowed for a fine line appearance that could be photographically reduced for reproduction without losing quality. It was most effective and expeditious for use in single-color book and newspaper printing. From the 1930's to 1950's, it was one of the preferred techniques for medical, scientific and product illustration.

13 Animal Scratchboard Objectives Create a unique artwork focusing on the texture and values of your animal on Scratchboard. Positive Space- (white) and Negative Space (black) MUST include part of the face, an eye, and some textural feature(s)

14 Steps to Achieve an Awesome Scratchboard Drawing 1. First choose a subject matter (we are going to do animals)- if you have an issue with this, please feel free to find other images and make sure to talk to me about it! 2. Sketch out the point of view of the animal, i.e. frontal view, side view, foreshortening, birds eye view while PRACTICING creating texture using a white charcoal pencil on black construction paper (DO NOT OUTLINE) 3. Detail the animal view you would like to recreate with hatching, cross hatching (practice on scratchboard) 4. Sketch the drawing lightly on the scratchboard with pencil 5. Use a stylus or wooden tool to Scratch your animal and it s texture

15 DO not outline your animal, but look at the values (if you create an outline you may not get the desired effect with texture)- The only outline should be with your pencil to provide a GUIDELINE for you

16 Creating 5 Values: Black: do not scratch away White: scratch away completely. Dark Gray: scratch lines that are far from one another. Medium Gray: scratch lines that are scratched away are near one another. Light Gray: scratch lines that are close to one another.

17 Questions to think about What variety of lines and shapes are in your picture? Where is the positive and negative space on your scratchboard? How are you going to incorporate value in your scratchboard image? Is your composition balanced?

18 Sketch/Practice You will be lightly sketching your animal onto black construction paper with a pencil. Using a white charcoal pencil, practice adding the values and textures of your animal with hatching, cross hatching, stippling motions with the pencil (This replicates how you will be scratching away on your scratchboard) DO NOT OUTLINE WITH WHITE PENCIL!

19 Then practice a small section on Scratchboard (You will be scratching or drawing in the highlights, not the shadows with the stylus)

20 Preliminary Drawing Lightly onto the scratchboard with Pencil before you begin or transfer your sketch (put pencil on the back of your sketch and then trace on top of scratchboard lightly) Use short, soft strokes as you begin to scratch away and create the various values (halftones and highlights). DO NOT MAKE IT UP- Use your reference photo- DO NOT OUTLINE WITH STYLUS

22 Timeline: Lab time: Feb 28/March 1st finding animal pictures for reference Practice: March 1 st March 5th- Black construction paper practice with white charcoal pencil Practice with Scratch board: March 6 th -7th You will get tiny practice pieces of scratch board to practice your animal feature and textures Final Scratch board piece: March 8 th -19 th 1. Transfer to Large Scratchboard (You only get ONE scratch board). This will be the final piece you turn in for a grade.
