AP Summer Work DeLong AP Art is an extremely demanding course. The course begins over the summer because of the volume of work that needs to be completed. I ask that you begin your summer work immediately and work throughout the summer. If you do not complete ALL the work by the first day of class, you will be behind on the exam and will be playing catch up all year long. Also, if the work does not score at least a 3 or better it will not be acceptable; therefore you will have to redo your summer work.. AP art is for the serious student! The projects will count as 15% of your first quarter grade. They will be graded on a scale from 1-6, like the AP rubric found in your syllabus (5=A, 4=B, 3=C, 2=D, 1=F). In order to complete the assignments you will need to purchase several materials. These materials will be used throughout the school year as well. I recommend that you buy the following: Compressed Charcoal 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils Digital camera or a smartphone with a good camera Paint brushes- acrylic, oil, and watercolors Erasers- kneaded and plastic Watercolors Ink, pens, or sharpie markers Colored pencils- Prismacolor are the best Sketchbook Paper- Lenox 100 and toned papers- gray, black, blue, etc You will complete 4 of the listed 12 projects and work in your sketchbook. All work should be of the highest quality! Please do not rush the projects! These projects will most likely be part of your AP or college portfolios. If you do not spend the time on the projects they will not be good enough! Please complete thumbnails, color studies and ideas in your sketchbooks. 1. Direct Observation Object Triptych- A triptych is a painting or drawing consisting of three panels. Each panel should be the same size and no smaller than 9 x 12 nor larger than 11x14. You must work from life! Use the entire page. Your object should be rendered as realistically as possible. Make sure your values are correct! Please choose an object that is interesting and provides good areas of lights darks. Materials needed: Charcoal, kneaded eraser, object EX:

2. Foreshortened View of person To foreshorten is to make something appear shorter than it actually is in order to create a threedimensional effect on the basis of the laws of perspective. You must work from your OWN photograph. Use the entire page! Render the figure as realistically as possible. Concentrate on composition and focus point. Materials are your choice of the following: pastels, watercolors, gouache, oils or acrylics 16 x Realistic colored pencil drawing: Work from your own reference photo (Candy, shells, supplies, etc.) Make sure it is an interesting composition and colorful. Colored pencils on toned paper. 11 x 14

4. Realistic Pencil or Charcoal Still Life Rendering Arrange at least 5 interesting objects into a challenging composition. Choose objects that relate to each other; they can tell a story or simply just have meaning. You must draw from life! Render the objects as realistically as possible. Materials: Pencil or charcoal 16 x 20

5. White colored pencil on black paper- Human or animal figure drawing Work from life or from your OWN photo Materials: White Colored pencil & black paper. Highlight the values and tones. 16 x 20

6. Portraiture Painting: Work from your own photo! You may use any style of painting (impressionism, realism, etc.) Materials: Acrylic or Oil Paint 16 x 20 paper or canvas board

7. Kaleidoscope / Symmetry / Balance / Repetition Create a painting of a design that contains aspects of a kaleidoscope. It must have balance symmetry, and repetition. Materials: Gouache 16 x Fractured Element and Principles drawing Choose an object or objects to draw. Break the drawing into fragments. In random sections use a variety of mediums and elements of principles of art to complete the various sections. 16 x 20

9. Unity/Harmony/Patterns/Cultural Studies Look at Aboriginal Art, African Art. It can be representational or non-representational. Medium: watercolor or gouache 11 x Photography You will need to hand in a total of 8 photos. You might have to take hundreds of photos in order to get 8 excellent photos. Look at different photographers for inspiration. You may submit these images digitally. You do not need to get them printed! 1- Up Close - Get up close to your subject. Pick an everyday object and focus on a small part of it. Get as close as your camera will allow you to focus and shoot away. Try for different angles and unusual lighting to add to the mystery of this tiny world. From the whiskers of your pet cat, to a fragile Christmas ornament, to soap bubbles, there is an entire world that we often overlook because we don't get close enough. 2- Pets - Pets are vital parts of our lives and each one is unique. Focus on capturing your pet's personality so that it shines in the image. 3- Home - Take an image that represents "home" to you. Your sibling covered in mud, your grandmother cooking, or even a pile of laundry can represent home. 4- Motion - Photography is a static medium. That means that it is still, it doesn't move. Conveying a sense of motion in that static medium is often essential to capturing a scene and/or emotion. I want you to convey motion in your images. Blur it, stop it, and suggest it. How you convey motion is up to you. 5- Trees - Trees come in an infinite variety of types and shapes and sizes. Some are tall while others are short. Some are alive with leaves while others are dead and leafless. Some show their roots to the world while others bury them deep underground. Some have strong branches that reach ever skyward and still others have flexible branches that sweep the ground. What do you think of when you think of trees? Show us your vision of what "trees" means. 6- Shadows -Take a look around for shadows and record them on film. You could show the shadow as the total focus of the image. Or perhaps the shadow is incidental to the subject. Is the shadow natural or created by flash? Shadows are integral to creating depth in a 2 dimensional medium such as photography. 7- H20 - Still water, moving water, muddy water. Whatever water you chose to photograph, make the water the subject.

8- Vehicles - From fire trucks to tractors to mustangs - pick a vehicle and show us your best image. Include the whole vehicle or do a study of one part of the vehicle...it is entirely up to you. 11. Digital Portrait If you have Photoshop or a design program you will need to use it for this project. Take a photo of a friend or family member and render over the picture so it flattens the face and creates a cartoon/ Bitmoji of the person. If you do not have access to a computer program, you can still simplify a portrait by hand and use markers or paint to complete this assignment.

12. Mosaic- Use photos, newspaper, or magazines to create a mosaic. Theme: Portrait 11 x 14. AP TEST TAKERS: There is a suggested Lab fee of $ The lab fee will include matting of quality art pieces, sliding of artwork and acetate. If you pay the lab fee before the end of the school year, you may also take the paper needed for your summer projects. **If you do not pay the fee, you will be responsible for your own materials and mat board for the AP exam. COLLEGE PORTFOLIOS: If you are planning on applying to an Art college you will need both a digital and slide portfolio prepared by November. Please carefully read your college s requirements. I will help you choose images for your portfolio, but you must make your own arrangements for taking your slides and digital images! Good Luck! Have a great summer. You may contact me with any questions: delongl@norwalkps.org
