Happy Art Making!!! AP Art Ms. Uryase, uryasegr@watertownps.org AP Studio Art (Drawing) is designed for students who plan to major in Art in college and would like the challenge of college level assignments while still in high school. As an AP studio artist,

you are expected to submit quality artwork that can be comparable to artwork produced at a college level. The work is rigorous and requires work be done outside of class studio time as well. Your summer assignments help alleviate the pressure during the school year of producing the many high level, quality pieces that are needed for a successful portfolio. You will be responsible for 2 high quality, finished pieces of artwork over the summer. You will also be responsible for 2 sketchbook assignments, as well 2 journal assignments, and museum master sketch, concentration journal that will assist with brainstorming, planning and organizing your artistic process and will be described below. Assignments will be due during the summer via images at dates on the first page. Physical work (artwork and journals) are due the first day of class. A camera and the ability to download images is a must for any serious art student. SUMMER WORK GENERAL GUIDELINES: 1. Draw directly from life whenever possible: If you do use a photo, it must be your own. 2. Size of your Artwork: Use standard sizes from 9x12 up to 18x24. Anything larger cannot be submitted for the Quality section of AP. 3. Draw/Paint ACCURATELY in full value according to light source to create a sense of form: AVOID flat contour pieces or cartoony, cheesy or cliché images. 4. Do not sign your name on the front of your work or place identifying marks on the front as per AP guidelines. Be sure to write your name on the back. 5. Look at good art in person!!! The Internet only tells part of the story. Visit museums, galleries, Art Shows. Bring your sketchbook with you so you may notate and respond to images that you see. 6. EXPLORE artists, techniques and media on the Internet or in art magazines for the subject matter you are working on. You cannot grow as an artist without looking beyond your own imagery. 7. KEEP A QUALITY SKETCHBOOK/JOURNAL WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. Approximately 9x12 is a recommended size. You should have a decent, heavy weight paper that will accept a variety of media. Watch for coupons for Michaels in the Sunday newspaper or on line coupons for Blick s and AC Moore in Plainville. Choose 4 projects from following 9 projects: 2 have to be creative assignments, 2 have to focus on technical skills. Each assignment will say creative or technical next to it.

Project Option #1: TECHNICAL I nterior Architectural Space Defined by Light Assignment Clara Lieu, Student Artwork, RISD Foundation Studies, Freshman Drawing course- must show repetition, light, shadows, and have diagonals in composition

Project Option #2: TECHNICAL Draw multiples views of one object, different parts, different scales and perspectives using sight measuring techniques. Procedure: Draw one view on one piece of paper. Repeat 6-8 times (6 drawings, 6 pieces of paper). Then use window to trace at least five views on piece of paper thinking of good compositions, balance, and emphasis. Leave some contour line, some partially shaded, and shade drawing you most want to be emphasis in full values according to light source. Suggested- objects with varied line qualities or reflective objects, objects where each side has a different view- example teapot, bike, saw Medium- pencil (charcoal or marker if you work well with them)

Project option #3: TECHNICAL Extreme foreshortened figure on prepared ground surface. Looking for strong accurate contour line drawing ( not painting like pictures). Use cross contour and value to make object look 3d. (May turn into painting later in year). Focus- perspective, accurate proportions Procedure: 1. (optional) Step one prepare paper surface- See link: Paper will be your midtone. 2. On different piece of paper- Draw extreme foreshortened clothed figure from observation (photo) with selected areas full value. You may grid. Use cross contour to make it look 3D. 3. (Optional) Transfer drawing to prepared surface paper. Make sure there is contrast from background to drawing so drawing is clearly seen. Make expressive.

Project option #4 CREATIVE Look at artist Pat Perry to gain inspiration. Using pencil, charcoal, marker, or ink or a combination of two, create a drawing in a similar style of Pat Perry, where you draw a silhouette or full figure pose form observation and add of your street and where you live. DRAW FROM OBSERVATION. Perspective must show foreground, middle ground, background. Change this one to your street and then in head have one smaller environment ( your room, backyard) etc. where you live. Watch perspective youtube videos one and two point if you need refresher. Perspective: Sight measuring:

Project Option #5 CREATIVE Experimental drawings of crowded spaces- fast, gestural drawings. Research Edgar Degas ballerina drawings, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele s figure studies, Jason Polan s illustrations, Adrian Tomine s New York Drawings. or In 30 minutes, use continuous lines to draw every figure that enters a public space. How to draw gesture- Proko Youtube:

Option Number 6: TECHNICAL Anatomy studies- on same page draw one body part or facial feature in depth three times. Fill the whole page. Shade with whole value with white, grey, and black with mark making. Research How to draw hands:

Option #7 CREATIVE Take picture of yourself or family member with clear light source. Draw on 18 x 24 paper ( gridding optional). Build up values with expressive scumbling or watercolor dripping to tell more about the person s emotional or social characteristics. Research Agnes Cecile and Lionel Smith(artsy).

Option #8 CREATIVE Read this article on Juan Carlos Riverlo-Cintra s art making: Look at artist Juan Carlos Riverlo-Cintra on artsy. Illustrate a memory using metaphors.

Project #9 CREATIVE Design a character that is one of the following: hybrid and imaginary or contemporary surrealistic. Use reference photos of someone you know and then use drawig references. Suggested artists for research Michael Hassar, Lauren Ys, Eduardo Berliner, Pryiyantha Udagedra, Inka Essenhigh, Crystal Morley or Glenn Brown. You can also research hybrids and imaginary creatures or contemporary surrealism on artsy. Suggested mediums pencil and selective watercolor, or pen and ink. BE INSPIRED BY ARTISTS BUT DONT DIRECTLY COPY THEM- look at creativity rubric on back of packet

Ap Sketchbook AssignmentS I want you to complete two sketchbook assignments that relates to your AP summer projects. The sketchbook pages themselves should look like a piece of art that you spent a great deal of effort on time on. For each sketchbook assignment it should include: Two pages of work in sketchbook ( when you open sketchbook they are side by side) Include two artists that work in the same medium or subject matter (Use one of the artists I gave to you in assignment, find another that you like). Glue or attach at least two of their artworks in the sketchbook pages. Total four art works for each assignment. Include artist s name and anything you find interesting about their work. To fill the remaining room on the sketchbook page:

you can try to replicate their work ( part of it, not all) Try something similar to the artist but different subject matter Investigate subject matter, explore new drawing technique Practice something will that help you be prepared for your project Mark making, perspective, list of potential ideas ***Needs to be some sort of your own drawing on these pages Examples of sketchbook pages Halima s sketchbooks contain rich, mixed media pieces, sculptural exploration, fabric investigations, and

manipulation of materials experiments with stitching, surface and pattern. A journey that begins with first-hand observation and ends with complex, three-dimensional pieces

This sketchbook page shows the critical analysis of relevant artist work. It is important to note that it is rarely necessary to imitate an entire artist work: copying small pieces is all that is needed to learn about an artist s technique, style, use of media or approach to composition. In this example, the composition of the page as a whole has been carefully considered: the placement of the small images on the left balance the larger portrait on the right, creating a harmonious page layout. Note also that the annotation is neat, tidy, and small. It thus supports, rather than detracts from, the artwork and indicates to the examiners that the work was produced by a committed, dedicated student This sequence of Advanced Higher Art sketchbook pages shows clearly how a sketchbook should be used to aid the development of ideas. It is the place where a candidate thinks laterally, resolves issues and moves forward with their work.

In addition to doing two sketchbooks in preparations for your two projects I want you to do two sketchbooks of two artists you research and find that you like that will aid in your concentration ideas. See examples at

Concentration Assignment Concentration theme you would like to do: Why do you want to spend all year exploring this? Draw a thumbnail picture of 12 images you could use that relate to one theme. 25 AP Art Summer Work- Parent Contract Hello! My name is Miss Uryase and I m excited to be your AP Art drawing Teacher. Art is a vital part of your education and I m thrilled that we ll have the opportunity to explore a range of subject matter and materials together. AP art drawing will help your child make a professional portfolio they can apply to college with or create to push their artistic abilities to the next level. This summer the students have summer work to help alleviate the load of their portfolio which needs 24 art works by May 5. It is very important that the students come into September with at least 6 strong art works, and I hope four of these are made this summer. To help your kids be successful I would like them to complete 4 art projects this summer, they can choose from 9 projects, listed on watertown school website > under students> summer assignments. They should spend 12 hours on each project. Before your art student does their art projects they should do a sketchbook assignment helping them plan their project and find artists that inspire them. I expect to see 2 hours work on the sketchbook assignments. AP Art Summer Assignments: The summer assignments are also timed out like the AP course in the school year, a project is due every two weeks. AP Art is like a college course, with high expectations for quality and expectation that you can meet deadlines. All work should be uploaded to google classroom. There will a ten point penalty for each day it is overdue. Summer work is a requirement for this class and the grades will count as part of the first quarter grade. If your student does not have a passing grade from all of the summer work, I will not recommend they take AP Art as a course. If summer work is not completed they will start school year with a failing grade. To help you help your child you are welcome to join our our remind app, where I send text reminders of due dates for the students.

Required Materials: You are required to have a 9 x12 sketchbook for this course. Please invest in a good quality sketchbook, something spiral bound with heavier drawing paper (70 lbs or better). You can buy them at Michaels, or any craft store. You can also print out coupons from Michaels art store online. I also encourage you to buy materials that you will need to make art at home. Please keep a copy of these policies and return the attached page, which states that you and your parents understand the summer requirements for this course. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at: uryasegr@watertownps.org AP ART- Drawing Please sign and return this form, which states that you and your parents understand the requirements for summer for this course.
