1 Grade 12: IB Visual Arts Summer Assignment : Your summer assignment is going to be about art making, process, exploration and being curious!! This work should be approached with freedom and yet should have some threads from the artwork and process you have pursuing in spring semester. All of the work you do in your Visual Art Journal this summer has potential to be your evidence for your Comparative Study and Process Portfolio. In August we will begin to map out your CS and PP and will complete the final drafts during first semester, along with several of your Exhibition artworks. I ve included the marking criteria for PP and CC at the end of the assignment so you can familiarize yourself with the criteria. This summer you will be completing two artworks and at the minimum 10 Visual Art Journal pages Summer Assignment: 1) Complete TWO artworks in two different mediums (remember our 3 categories 2D, 3D and lens based) I ve attached a grid at the end of the assignment to remind you about the categories. 2) Complete at least 5 Visual Art Journal pages for each artwork At least 1 page of the following different areas (Experimentation, Intention, Investigation, Communication, Reflection) Use the following heading for each page. If you are only doing one page, please fill the page with a lot of information and evidence. If you want the content spread out then do multiple pages for each topic. Experimentation: Techniques, annotated and stepped out. Use photographs of various stages of process, take notes, experiment. Intentions: What do I want to communicate? How do I hope the viewer will perceive the artwork? What symbols, colors, marks, concepts will get my intentions across? CITE SOURCES!!!! Investigations: Which artists, works, art forms, and non-art resources do I find interesting? Ideas might include: scientific principles, news articles, historic events, art movements, museum visits. Use these pages to sketch other artists work, investigate observational drawing, write down thoughts on documentaries, gallery shows, books you are reading and more. This page is about what and who you are curious about. CITE ALL SOURCES!!
2 Communication: How is my communication of ideas and intentions (visual and written) changing? How have my ideas developed through experimentation of techniques? What art elements and principles am I using and how is this helping to communicate my intentions effectively? What senses and emotions do I want the viewer to experience through my work? Reflection: How have you developed during the process of creating this artwork? How has your investigation, experimentation and process influenced the final outcome? What is successful? What can be improved? Did an artist, art movement or a gallery show you visited influence this artwork? See this link on annotating your Visual Art Journal. 3) Research Comparative Study and Process Portfolio task and find some good examples. As I said above, familiarize yourselves with the marking criteria. 4) Lastly, BE CURIOUS!!! -Watch documentaries -Look at art first hand and go to museums and galleries. Additionally please continue your research in books and internet. Gather evidence of this, take notes and cite all work properly. -Journal/write about ideas and concepts that are important to you -Create mind maps (see link below) -Take photos of images, textures and anything else that inspires that you may want to paint or draw...gather lots of your own references this summer. If you are traveling, look at what is different in other cultures and notice these things. Visiting local markets can tell you a lot about cultural differences too. Just be observant and open. -Use your Visual art journal to gather lots of ideas, use Pinterest, IG and print out your references and file them in a file folder for future use. Textbook for
