This is an introductory course to the Visual Arts focusing on many types of mediums in the art world so you can develop imagination, express yourself, and use art as a form of communication. Education in the arts improves teambuilding skills, critical thinking skills, complex problem skills, writing, self- confidence, literacy, decision- making, school achievement, and preparation for the work world. This course supports intellectual and educational development along with personal and social development. It is a beginner art course. Learning Goals: Students will be able to construct meanings about the world through art making; build upon experiences to express a personal vision; develop a global perspective and recognize the power of art to communicate beliefs and values. Students will be able to discuss works of art, develop observational skills, use a visual arts vocabulary, read and write about art to reinforce literary skills, and reflect on the process of making art. Students will be able to connect visual art to other disciplines and recognize cultural and historical significance of art. Students will be able to access primary resources in the community, the borough, and the city to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Students will gain awareness of careers in the visual arts, recognize personal, social, and professional goals, learn to works independently and in teams, and gain an appreciation of art as a source of enjoyment and life- long learning. 1

2 Grading Policy: Projects/ Studio Work (40%): This includes individual and group projects accompanied by specific rubrics Participation/ Procedures (40%): This includes attendance, lateness, classroom involvement, discussions, notebook activities, journals, and overall use of class time. Writing/ Quizes (10%): Each student is required to have a notebook containing organized class notes, goals, and journals. Quizzes will be given periodically to assess what you are learning in class. Homework (10%): Homework will be assigned periodically. Art Room Policies and Procedures: Be on time and be present each and every day. Each absence that is not accompanied by a doctor s note, a parental explanation of a religious holiday or by another legitimate emergency situation will deduct points from your final participation grade. Social events are not excused absences. Lateness: if you are late to class, quietly enter and sign in the LATE PAGES. Stay on Task / Take ownership of your learning: Work to the best of your ability and be responsible. YOU are responsible for handing in projects/assignments on time with a rubric. Treat all members of the studio with respect: All of us create at different speeds, learn differently, and have different strengths. Compliments and positive mental attitudes (PMA) only. Respect our materials: We don t have many, but are lucky to have what we have. They are for our use, so take good care of them. Keep your tabletops clean (absolutely no writing on them!) Bathroom: You may use the bathroom when absolutely necessary but not during the first 10 or last 10 minutes of the period. To use the bathroom you must sign out of the Bathroom Log and take the pass. If abused, bathroom privileges will be taken away unless you have a doctor s note. Periods 2 & 7. Food and Drink are not allowed in the studio. No electronics in the classroom(cell phones, IPODS, headphones, etc.) 2

3 Studio Art Class has several year long goals. They are: 1. Create original works of art utilizing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. 2. To learn how to analyze and observe a work of art over an extended period of time. 3. To gain awareness of careers in the visual arts and develop an appreciation for the arts. 4. To access primary resources in the community and extend their learning beyond the classroom. 5. To actively participate in our annual visual arts and media exhibit. It is my job to teach you how to draw and paint but not do your artwork for you. In order for our class to run effectively and smoothly the following daily procedures have to happen: Students will do the following when they come into class regularly in order to achieve our class goals: Have a pencil and eraser ready. When you arrive in class, take out your supplies & project, unless asked to do otherwise. Walk up to the demonstration table when asked by Ms. Fairfull Actively listen for project directions, return to your seat and begin to work on your project. Raise your hand for any questions you may have after the demonstration. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to: Get information for work missed when absent in a timely manner. (24hours within the assignment due date) Meet class assignments and sketchbook deadlines and requirements. Course Materials and Technology Expectations: COURSE MATERIALS Supply List: Although we have certain materials in the art studio, you will need to purchase the following supplies. These supplies stay in the art studio and will be be readily available for your use. These materials can be purchase at any school supply store (Officemax, Staples, Walmart, Target, etc), art store (Pearl Paint, Utrecht, Artstore), or online. If there is a problem obtaining these materials, please write me a note from your guardian or contact me at: Efairfull@schools.nyc.gov 3

4 SUPPLIES: (Use the following list as a guide when purchasing required art supplies): Recommend Hardcover but spiral bound is ok- size 9x12 (100 pgs.) 2 Pink Pearl Erasers 1 box of #2 Pencils 2 Hand held sharpeners 1 box of colored pencils (10-12 colors) non- erasable Pencil Case to hold your supplies 2 each black sharpie markers: fine and ultrafine. Technology Expectations: Laptop and desktop computers will be used at times during class to complete assignments and do research. These computers are to be treated as if they were your own. Your table will be assigned a numbered computer for which you are responsible for at all times during class. Laptops are not allowed to leave the art room. You must always use your table s assigned computer. The use of the laptop computers is not a right, it is a privilege. Please respect them and take proper care of them. Studio Art Course Outline First Term - September through January Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Elements of Design (September) Abstract Art Using visual literacy methods to learn about abstract artists Researching current abstract artists Organic and geometric shapes Use of line, pattern and blending of color to show depth Creating a three dimensional group art piece Portfolio Evaluation 1: September October Trompe L oiel (October) Looking at professional art work using visual literacy techniques. Use of shading, blending, drawing techniques Recreating a photorealistic piece of art work. Unit 2.5 Leaf Pattern Design (October / November) Drawing from direct observation Looking at leaves as reference for composition. Use of composition to show depth Use of warm and cool colors Negative Space Project: (November) Positive space: the object or shape itself Negative space- the area surrounding the object Cropped images Overlapping of shapes. Figurine Drawings (December/ January) Each student will draw a figurine 16 times in 16 different poses. They must shade using warm and cool colors. Can use primary or secondary colors. 4

Using the grid method students will recreate a self portraits based on photographs. Students will look at and study work of Chuck Close. African Masks Creating thumbnails of masks Use of masks in society Building masks Creating a rubbing Using recycled art materials to recreate a print Drawing from direct observation Looking at still lives as reference for composition Use of composition to show depth Drawing realistic art room tools Use of watercolors and sharpie markers Creating backgrounds Students will study optical art. Create small group drawing based on optical art design. They will then recreate a larger group painting ALL Students will participation in the first RGHS Arts show. Collaborative show between Media and Arts Students will select best art work for show. Greek vases/ or Maracas depending on time restraints. Art Show! Date TBA Students will create a symmetrical name design. They will use their name or a word or phrase that they like to illustrate their symmetrical design. They are required to use sharpie markers and colored pencils. Homework Assignments Sept-Dec Sketch Book Assignments 2014 : You will be keeping a sketchbook for the entire year. This sketchbook will be a series of drawings and mixed media pieces. Each one should be considered a complete art piece. This means that composition and principles of good design can and should be utilized. They can be in any media unless specifically designated. One sketchbook assignment is due every week. You may choose any assignment on the list. Make sure that it is labeled. Unlabeled work will result in a zero. 5

6 SBK Name Idea# #1 Using a ruler draw a checkerboard grid creating an alternating rhyme using one design. Turn the design upside down in every other box. #2 Collect 5 different types of leaves fallen from leaves and or bushes. Draw all 5 of the leaves on one sheet of sketchbook paper. Remember to take your time and really examine the leaves textures, lines, lightness/ darkness and shape. Please wrap or tape all leaves in your sketchbook for full credit. #3 Draw a new license plate for New York #4 What is your Sign (horoscope)? Look up information and create a design using your "symbols." Include the name of your sign in the design. (Libra is about balance. One could incorporate the scales, etc.) #5 Your shoes or sandals (off your feet) #6 Close your eyes and draw slowly for 2 minutes. Open your eyes and play with the lines; adding letters, symbols, patterns, textures and color. #7 Practice contour line drawing with a variety of drawing tools and numerous objects; ie: shoes, boots, kitchen utensils, plants, your hands and feet. #8 A view out a window of your choice (with motion or still) showing inside and out #9 Illustrate a dream you have had. Research Salvador Dali or Marc Chagall to see how these Surrealists expressed their "subconscious" ideas and desires. #10 Create a page of patterns that could be turned into wrapping paper. Use markers or colored pencils and start with a theme in mind #11 Draw the inside of your refrigerator, with shading and light #12 Create a collage illustrating the idea of happiness #13 Illustrate Run Below are the dates listed for your sketchbook assignments. They are due every two weeks on a Friday. As you complete an assignment make sure that you check them off in your sketchbook. After school is offered 2x s a week, you are more than welcome to attend and I will help you.
