1 KNES Art & Design Course Outline Year 9 Art & Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Key Stage 3 students at KNES use colour, form, tone, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich their personal and public lives. In Term 1, Change your style: Year 9 students will explore contemporary design and the ways in which artists take ideas from the work of others and synthesise these into new creative forms. They develop their own ideas and design and make woven textiles, a ceramic form, a three-dimensional construction. They investigate the influence of art from different cultures and traditions on fashion and design. All projects will be underpinned by a formal introduction to the Elements of Art through worksheets and assignments. The Theory of Colour will be introduced and explored through experimentation with different media. In Term 2, Life events: Year 9 students will explore ideas and feelings about an event in their own life as the starting point for image making. They analyse paintings, prints, photographs and digital images, including examples of photojournalism, to learn how visual qualities can be manipulated to evoke strong reactions and to represent ideas, beliefs and values. They make connections between eighteenthand nineteenth-century paintings and contemporary visual culture. They will be introduced to a variety of different art media and techniques and how to use it successfully. They will continue exploring Art Theory through the completion of worksheets and assignments. In Term 3, Personal places, public spaces: Year 9 students will explore examples of public art in their local area. They research the different ways in which ideas, beliefs and values are represented and shared in their local area and in different times and cultures, including contemporary modern practice. They explore ways of representing their own ideas and then collaborate with others to make a mural or a three-dimensional form for a specific location. They will learn about the many different ways various artists through history, have portrayed the human face. They will start to explore History of Art through the completion of worksheets and assignments.

2 Assessment for Year 9: Behaviour in class and participation in the lessons: 20 Equipment and materials: 20 Sketchpad Portfolio: 20 End of Term Practical Project: 20 End of Term written exam: 20 Total: 100 Studio Rules / Teacher s expectations / Discipline policy: When you hear the bell at the start of the day or at break time, line up immediately. Students should line up quietly outside the Art studio, enter quietly, leave their bags neatly against the wall, get their Art Boxes and stand quietly behind their chairs to greet the teacher. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work you missed from a classmate upon your return. Equipment and materials are a vital part of your internal mark and failing to bring required equipment, which will always be prescribed in advance to the lesson will result in a 0/20 in that section of the continuous assessment criteria. If you miss a deadline or area within a specific discipline, you will receive a 0/20 unless you can provide a medical note to show you were not able to attend. You are to use washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks, not during lessons. Be sure to buy food in the cafeteria before the last minutes of your break; you may not bring any food and/or drink into the studio. Lateness and unauthorized absence will be punished following the discipline policy. Course Outline
