1 Art Syllabus Objectives 1. To nurture an informed awareness and appreciation of the visual arts. 2. To enhance ability to identify and solve problems creatively in visual and tactile forms. 3. To develop competency in the use of art elements and design principles, materials and processes. 4. To foster self-confidence and a sense of achievement through the practice of the visual arts. 5. To cultivate an inquiring mind, a spirit of experimentation and a passion for the visual arts. The objectives of the syllabus are achieved through the framework of Perceiving, Communicating and Appreciating. Framework Perceiving: 1. Students respond to and interpret visual images and objects sensitively and informatively. 2. Learn to discriminate and make connection between different visual qualities and phenomena. 3. Develop visual awareness and sensitivities that encourage imagination and the generation of ideas. Communicating: 1. Students express their thoughts, experiences and feeling in visual, tactile, oral or literary forms. 2. Involving drawing on ideas, organising information, solving problems and expressing intent and purpose. 3. Develop process skills to reinforce the effectiveness of communicating, through research and exploration. Appreciating: 1. Student value the visual arts as a means of expression. 2. Learn to evaluate and appreciate artworks made by themselves and other artists. 3. To see the connection of the visual arts to their lives and better appreciate its significance in the wider context of culture and society. 4. Develop aesthetic and cultural awareness from which personal and cultural identities could be examined and built upon. Learning outcome Perceiving: Record from observation and experience. Apply art elements and design principles in the creation of artworks. Explore creative use of materials, techniques and technologies to generate ideas and solutions to problem. Acquire competence in manipulating art media towards the expression of an idea. Communicate with relevant vocabulary the processes involved in art making. Appreciating: Enjoy experiences of art making. Achieve a sense of confidence and selfesteem through the visual arts Make connections between visual expressions and personal experiences. Critically appraise artists and artworks. Value local artworks as part of the development of Singapore s history and cultural heritage Develop an inquiring attitude and lifelong interest in the visual arts
2 Studio Practice Engages students in the creation of artworks. Provides opportunities for students to acquire a working understanding of various art elements and principles. Develop competency in manipulating various art media for selfexpression. Explore a good range of media and experiment with different techniques. Preparatory studies are an integral and important part of the Studio Practice. Learn to think through issues and problems and develop the abilities to translate ideas into artwork, through preparatory studies. Study of Visual Arts (SOVA) Emphasises the development of critical thinking skills such as description, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. Provides opportunities to respond to and discover insights from artists/artworks. Develop greater appreciation for the visual arts and students role in society. Assessment Domains: 1. Artistic Perception and Interpretation (API) 2. Cultural and Aesthetics Appreciation (CAA) 3. Personal Response (PR) Pre-Requisite : Elements of Art Principle of Design Media: Pencil drawing Colour Pencil (Foundation) Lesson Objectives At the end of the year, students should be equipped with: Portfolio with exploration of different art media and art forms. SOVA notes on the 12 artist covered in the year. Written SOVA practices. Sketchbooks of practices.

Recap on Elements of Art and Principles of Design through sketchbook task. Task: Using any art media, students are to produce: 1 abstract artwork that reflects the use of EOA. (A5sized) 1 abstract artwork that reflects the use of POD. (A5-sized) Observation: Outline Sketch Identify the shapes & forms / Axis / Structure / Weight of lines Student will learn the foundation of drawing through a series of still-life observation studies. Student should be able to achieve different line quality sketches through exploring the grip control. Learn to use axis lines as a guide to form the structure. Task: 1 outline sketch in Pencil. 1 outline sketch in Pen. Observation: Sketching Detailed sketching / Perspective drawings / Scales & Proportion Student should be able to widen their observation skills through identifying the important details on the given subject matter that shapes a successful sketch. Apply appropriate visual analysis to artworks, supported with evidence of how elements of art and principles of design are used. Sample questions: Discuss the use of the EOA and POD that are evident within the work. Discuss the use of form and space in this work. Describe the use of forms, texture and proportion/posture in this sculpture. Describe the subject matter of this painting. Describe the visual appearance of the painting. 5 Control the lightness of the lines to differentiate the axis line, outline, structure lines and the details. Student will learn about linear perspective, vanishing point & simple verticals to aide them in sketching. Revisit POD Scales & Proportion to portray realistic drawings. (A4-sized) 1 written practice for each artist Observation: Shadow studies Identifying the different tonal values with lines / Shadows and highlights in different viewpoints. Student will learn about the edges of shadow and outline of shadows. Revisit EOA Negative & Positive space. Identifying Mid tones / Dark & light tones. Task: 1 still-life. 1 portraiture. Observation: Shadow studies Blending Student will learn about creating tones by layering with different pencil grades. Creating tonal gradient. The use of eraser to create highlights. 7 Student will learn how they can manipulate subject matters to suit different themes, with the use of EOA and SCAMPER. Task: Student are to choose 2 subject matter and create a developmental work for each acronym in SCAMPER. What are the emotion expressed in this artwork? Discuss the use of colours and space in this painting. Task: 1 written practice for each artist. Wallace and Gromit A Close Shave Mid-Year Weighted Assignment Preparation: Students will be revising on the SOVA artists covered in this semester. Suggested MTV: Claim / Support / Question. Lessons are to include the 3 assessment domains of SOVA paper. Mid-Year Weighted Assignment Week Students will be siting for a formally written assignment. The assignment duration will be an hour, conducted during the three periods lesson. Semester 1 closing MYE paper check / Book check Student will be checking through the MYE paper Portfolio & Sketchbook check Collating and filing up all the practices / task and assignment.
