2 Drawing One Point Perspective 1. Lesson Title: One Point Perspective Landscape Drawing 2. Focus/ Objective: Students will learn how to draw a landscape using one point perspective. Students will: 1. Learn how one point perspective is used to create a 3D space on a 2D plain. 2. Learn how to use tone and value to show perspective. 3. Learn how to shade according to a light source. 4. Learn how overlapping gives perspective. 5. Learn one point perspective vocabulary. 6. Learn the history of perspective. 7. Learn how perspective is used in careers. 3. Middle School Benchmarks/ Standards: Students will: A. Use a variety of hard and soft graphic pencils in drawing: - Select materials, techniques, media technology and processes to achieve desired effects. (M1.1) B. Draw a landscape using one-point perspective: - Select and use the visual characteristics and organization principles of art to communicate ideas. (M1.3) - Use subjects, themes, and symbols that communicate intended meaning in artworks. (M2.4) C. Frame a one-point perspective landscape for presentation: - Be involved in the process and presentation of a final product or exhibit. (M1.4) D. Use one-point perspective to draw a 3D landscape on a 2D surface. - Select materials, techniques and processes to effectively communicate ideas. (M2.1) - Integrate visual, spatial and temporal concepts with content to communicate intended meaning in artworks. (M2.3) E. Use proper placement of images on a page to show perspective. - Employ organizational principles and analyze what makes them effective or not in the communication of ideas. (M2.2) F. Critique/Discuss landscape drawing using one-point perspective vocabulary. - Describe how materials, techniques, technology and processes cause responses. (M3.3)
3 - Describe and compare the characteristics of personal artwork to the artwork of others. (M3.4) G. Review and discuss past artists in history that used one-point perspective. - Describe and place a variety of art objects in historical and cultural contexts. (M4.2) H. Discuss how artists, architects, engineers, designers, and many other jobs use one-point perspective in their careers. - Describe and compare skills involved in arts-related and visual arts careers. (M5.2) 4. Grade Level 6 5. Resources: - Power Point on history of perspective and past and present artists - Teacher example of one-point perspective - Student examples of one-point perspective - Scholastic News article on perspective- March YouTube video on one-point perspective Power Point on history of perspective and past and present artists - Marianne s Journal of Fantasy Art Po-Art.co.uk Perspective handouts - One Point and Two Point Perspective - Junior High Art jh-art.usd298.groupfusion.net/modules/.../get_group_file.phtml?fid 6. Time: Six 45-minute class periods. 7. Materials and Preparation: - 18 inch metal rulers, hard and soft graphite pencils, 18 X 24 white drawing paper for final, plain 8 ½ X 11 paper for rough draft, and erasers. - Vocabulary: vanishing point, horizontal and vertical lines, parallel lines, onepoint perspective, diagonal line, intersecting, horizon line, motion, direction, foreground, middle ground, background, spatial depth, illusion of depth, overlapping, detail, composition, eye-level, proportion, light source, balance, and positive and negative space. 8. Introduction: Students will be shown how to draw one-point perspective landscape using a ruler, pencil, and eraser. They will be shown the history of perspective and a
4 demonstration of one-point perspective drawing. They will also be taught how to add shading to show a light source and depth. After the students have completed their drawings and mounted them for display, there will be a critique and evaluation. 9. Instruction: The lesson objective is to teach students how to draw a landscape using one-point perspective. Lesson: CLASS PERIOD 1 1. Tell students that they will be drawing a one-point perspective landscape. 2. Show the students the history of perspective. 3. Ask the class what they know about one-point perspective. - How does line suggest motion, direction, and distance? - What is a vanishing point? - How does line show value? - How do overlapping shapes create depth in a composition? - How can a 2D object appear 3D? - How does light source effect value? 4. Show students examples of perspective landscape drawings. 5. Demonstrate how to draw images using one-point perspective. 6. Give students ideas of what to put in their landscape. 7. For homework have the students think of ideas for their landscape design. CLASS PERIOD 2 8. Pass out drawing paper, rulers, erasers, and pencils for rough draft. 9. Have students begin drawing rough draft one-point. CLASS PERIOD 3 & Once the students have completed their rough draft they need to show it to the teacher for approval before going to their final draft on the 18 X 24 paper. 11. Students draw their final landscape on 18 X 24 paper, darkening the lines, adding detail, tone, and shadows. CLASS PERIOD 5 & After students have completed work they mount it on a black paper and sign their work. 13. Once all of the students have mounted their work have them do a class critique. The students should talk about what they think worked and didn t work in their drawing. They also need to talk about the positive aspects of other people s drawings. 14. After critique, the students need to fill out an evaluation on their work and turn it in.
5 10. Evaluation: After completing their drawings the students will self-evaluate their one-point perspective drawing. They will evaluated on: 1. Ability to correctly create a one-point perspective landscape drawing. 2. Understand and apply the art vocabulary pertaining to one-point perspective drawings in discussion and critique. 3. Understanding and apply overlapping, proportion, value, and composition. 4. Craftsmanship. 5. Uniqueness of design. 6. Finished mounted product. 7. Following direction.
