1 ART 120 Drawing I ITEM ##0630 Fall 2018 Instructor: Mrs. Patricia De Caro pdecaro@bellevuecollege.edu Phone Office C250A Office Hours: Mon/Wed noon-12:20 PM and 6:30-7 pm and by appointment WELCOME TO BEGINNING DRAWING Beginning drawing focuses on developing skills to translate imagery from direct observation onto the picture plane of your drawing page. This introductory course emphasizes skills, composition, and traditional approaches to the illusion of depth. In class our subject matter confronts drawing from observation; still life, interiors and landscapes (weather permitting). Sometimes students draw each other or people sitting in the environment. Our goals also include developing an understanding of linear perspective and atmospheric perspective. Your grade is based on the development of these outcomes as demonstrated in your drawings. Review these outcomes during the quarter so that you can stay on track. OUTCOMES AND GOALS 1. Translate formal components of subject matter with correct scale, proportion, and general shape. 2. Translate visual images with contour lines only. 3. Translate light and shadow on subject matter using a wide range of values. 4. Utilize compositional variables in a drawing, for example, using Mondrian sketch lines. 5. Create the illusion of advanced space through the use of atmospheric perspective. 6. Be able to translate an applicable interior space with 1 point perspective. 7. Analyze and verbally articulate drawing objectives in a formal critique/review process. 8. Create drawings using the medium of charcoal developing skill and techniques. BY THE END OF THIS COURSE: You will have skills to draw from life. Render realistic volume. Use charcoal medium to convey light and shadow, relate to background area, and create spatial depth. Be able to draw forms in linear perspective in a convincing manner.
2 HOW OUTCOMES WILL BE MET There are many tools available to represent our visual world. Drawing is an original one where traditional ideas have been practiced over time. With that in mind, this class is an introduction to the fundamental vocabulary and techniques of drawing with emphasis on developing your skills of perception and visual creativity. The class requires you to master the basics of drawing through regular practice because it is skill based. It demands your 100% participation, consistent attendance and 100% attention. Students will create work throughout the quarter that demonstrates their progress and conceptual understanding through class assignments. These assignments are turned in regularly for instructor evaluation. REQUIREMENTS 1.Regular and punctual attendance is mandatory. Instructions and demonstrations are given at the beginning and end of class. Students are expected to attend all classes whenever possible, and as such, missing more than 3 classes can effect your performance; class participation means drawing 3 hours during class time. Missing more than 20% or 5 classes will result in a grade of F. Arriving very late or leaving early receives partial 1/2 credit for the day. Students with DRC letters of accommodation should see me individually to determine if their accommodation applies. 2. Complete in-class assignments. You may need to give additional lab time for the completion of class work outside regular class meetings. The studio C256 is open for your use on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Drawings that are appear unfinished are lower in grade. 3. Completed homework assignments (done outside of class time). Late homework is discouraged and downgraded one point lower for each week late. Generally, late work is not accepted the last week of the quarter. In case there is a problem, please confer with me before the last week of class. GRADING POLICY Grading reflects your competence of developed skills and general concepts that are demonstrated in your drawings. Any work not submitted for a grade receives a "F". Distribution of grades will be: Classwork = 50% Homework = 40% In class assignments collected regularlyq Several assignments, done outside of official class time. Participation =10% 100% attendance; effort and progress; contribution to critiques; full attention during class engagement.
3 GRADING REFLECTS: 1. Adherence to instructions 2. Assignments are built upon one another (scaffolding) that demonstrates conceptual and artistic development. 3. Creative and original application of drawing principles. Evaluation is based on the quality of finished assignment and it s adherence to outcomes. 3. Total presentation of work (includes drawing technique and creativity) A=10 (exceptional) B= 8.5 (good) C= 7 (competent) D= 5.5 (below average) (Grades are given points rather than letters. They are easier to add this way) *You must finish 2/3 of all assignments (combination homework and class work) to pass this course. REQUIRED MATERIALS There is a Drawing Kit available - order your supplies on line at the Artful Touch Supplies will be delivered to the Art Department. Materials are required for the second class day. *all supplies are required to be successful in this course Newsprint pad of 100 sheets, rough surface preferred, 18 x 24 inches Strathmore- Drawing paper, series 400, smooth surface, 18 x 24 inches Charcoal paper- an assortment of black, medium grey, and white, 2 each, 19 x 25 " Soft block charcoal or black pastel; a pack of 3 sticks Drawing pencil 6B Grumbacher Willow vine charcoal, extra soft Matchbox set conte crayon (B soft) white/black/ reds (4 sticks in box) kneaded gum eraser (2 large) Staedtler white plastic eraser inexpensive portfolio, paper or otherwise, 19x 25 inches or larger small plastic T-square drafting tape 3 in 1 View Finder (Optional supplies:) black pastel (not oil) additional drawing papers waterless hand cleaner work apron Masonite board with clips or other type drawing board ( some extra boards in class) bull nose clips
4 Drawing Kit Available. "The Artful Touch" in Kirkland has organized a kit with most required materials. Order by the first class day to get your organized kits. They will deliver directly to campus for your convenience. Kits are handed out in class. The kit includes basic materials below to get you started: (425) Newsprint pad, rough surface, 18 x 24 inches Strathmore series 400 drawing paper, smooth, 18 x 24 inches charcoal paper, 2 sheets each; colors black, white and grey 19 x 25 inches 18 inch ruler / plastic T-square white plastic eraser/ kneaded gum erasers match set of Conte crayons - 4 colors soft block charcoal Grumbacher willow Charkole 6 B pencil and sharpener drafting tape/ view finder portfolio Please be aware that Bellevue College does not supply materials for your use. DRAWING CALENDAR You will be notified of any changes as they happen; deadlines may be revised if necessary. Studio lab open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday September 18th, first official class day. Our last class day is November 29th. December 3rd, I will be available during class hours. December 5th, finals week. Our last meeting. WEEK 01: Introduction to course and materials; What is drawing? Discussion and lecture. Quick sketch drawing; realizing size and proportion in imagery. Second class day basic materials are needed: Newsprint paper, conte crayon, and pencil. WEEK 02: DEMONSTRATION: Seeing shape. Symmetry. Sighting with pencil; Angling; Mondrian lines. Basic materials needed: Newsprint paper, conte crayon, charcoal pencil. WEEK 03: DEMONSTRATION: Seeing and experiencing the edge of form in contour and cross contour lines. WEEK 04: DEMONSTRATION: Layout, introduction to spatial location and foreshortening; Point of vieweye level view project. Standing and sitting effects how we see. Recommended readings and videos for next week: How to Draw in One Point Perspective- Frank Curkovic, You Tube; One Point Perspective Drawing Tutorial- Online Drawing Lessons, You Tube. Perspective Made Easy, Hal Foster (Dover Books) or another reference. WEEK 05: Introduction to Linear Perspective- Sketches Students are working independently throughout Building C.
5 WEEK 06: LINEAR PERSPECTIVE HALLWAY DRAWING Will be collected and graded. Materials needed: White sketch paper 18x24 inches, pencil, ruler or T- square. WEEK 07: DEMONSTRATION: From line to tone. *Form in space; spheres, cones, cubes. Simple still life. Developing tonal range with charcoal to convey three dimensional form. negative space as background. Materials: both strathmore paper and charcoal paper, vine charcoal, block charcoal, conte crayon. WEEK 08: Figure-Ground DEMO: Drapery study; Emphasis on value contrast and developing appearances of different surfaces. May require additional lab time to finish class work. WEEK 09: DEMO: Skeleton study. Materials: Vine charcoal on white charcoal paper. Car over to the following week. May require lab time to finish. WEEK 10: Grisalle Realizing texture and surface in form. Atmospheric perspective. Tone paper and conte crayon WEEK 11: LAST CLASS DAY NOVEMBER 29TH. Submit final work to be grade.
