1 Introduction to Drawing Instructor: Robert Watkins Art PHONE: WEBSITE: robertdwatkins.com CLASSROOM: Fontana Academic Center (FNAC) Room 213 HOURS: Monday and Wednesday 12:30 3:20 PM Office hours: 15 mins. immediately following each class COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to freehand drawing with an emphasis on drawing from direct observation. Focuses on the development of perceptual skills and the fundamentals of composition. Exploration of traditional and experimental approaches using a variety of black-and-white media. CONTENT A. Introduction to the fundamentals of visual communication: contour line, gestural line, descriptive line, positive and negative shapes, space, value, texture, scale and proportion. B. Introduction to experimental approaches to drawing: collage, mixed media, or alternative media. C. Drawing as it relates to creative problem-solving. D. Observational skills and proportional measurement. E. Basic principles of spatial illusion including: overlapping, diminishing size, vertical placement, atmospheric perspective, linear perspective and other perspective systems. F. Use of a variety of line and mark making approaches in drawing. G. Development and application of composition (design and organization) in drawing. H. Use of value and planes to describe forms and space. Illusion of volume: gradual tonal changes, chiaroscuro, cross-hatching, and stippling. I. Introduction to and use of a variety of drawing techniques and black and white media, including but not limited to: graphite pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, pen, and brush and ink. J. Development of expressive content through manipulation of line, shape, value, and composition. K. Critical evaluation and critique of class projects using relevant terminology in oral or written formats. L. Historical and contemporary developments, critical trends, materials, and approaches to drawing. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: A. Practice objective and subjective approaches to drawing. B. Observe and accurately render three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface.

2 C. Create drawings that demonstrate the basic principles of spatial illusion through the application of linear, atmospheric, and other perspective systems. D. Utilize a variety of lines and mark-making in drawing. E. Organize spaces and objects within a drawing according to basic principles of design and composition. F. Accurately describe forms and space through gradations of value. G. Employ a wide range of media, techniques and creative strategies to solve drawing problems. H. Develop expressive content through the manipulation of the visual elements (line, shape, value, space and composition). I. Evaluate and critique class projects using relevant terminology in oral or written formats. J. Examine and describe historical and contemporary developments, trends, materials, and approaches in drawing. LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Upon the successful completion of ART 14 (grade "C" or higher), a student will be able to illustrate the concept of modeling in the creation of a representational drawing 2. Upon the successful completion of ART 14 (grade "C" or higher), a student will be able to evaluate a drawing from a formalist perspective. 3. Upon the successful completion of ART 14 (grade "C" or higher), a student will be able to compose drawings based on the creative manipulation of the visual elements. MATERIALS Most of the materials needed for this class are contained in a kit available at the bookstore in the FNAC building on the Fontana campus 19" x 24" white drawing paper pad* Graphite pencils--1 each: 2H, HB, 2B 1 kneaded eraser X-Acto knife #1 Conté crayons: 1 each: white and black sanguine or sepia Watercolor brush #6 round 1 jar black India ink 6" x 6" chamois paper drawing blenders Compressed charcoal sticks (4B) 1 charcoal pencil set 1 sandpaper pad carrying case ADDITIONAL Sketchbook (no smaller than 8.5" x 11") Plastic triangle MATERIALS 1 black drawing pen (Micron pigma pen size 01) Canson or other neutral tone paper TEXTBOOK No textbook is required for this class. The instructor will provide printed handouts covering assignments and additional information. Please read them thoroughly.

3 GRADING Homework 20 pts/assignment x 11 assignments 220 pts. possible Sketchbook 10 pts/assignment x 10 assignments 100 pts. possible Quizzes 10 pts/quiz x 4 quizzes 40 pts. possible Artist Presentation 20 pts. possible Final drawing 30 pts. possible Participation (grade based upon individual progress) 40 pts. possible Total 450 pts. possible 0-59% F 60-63% D % D 67-69% D % C % C 77-79% C % B % B 87-89% B % A % A % A+ EVALUATION Class projects are graded on ability to follow instructions, neatness and creativity. All work must be received by the set deadlines or points will be deducted from your score. On-time projects may be redone for an improved score with instructor approval. NO MAKE-UP WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER WEEK 14. ETIQUETTE Please inform the instructor in advance if you must miss class. You are responsible for making up work. Arrive on time - lectures and demos will take place at the beginning of each session. You are responsible for work missed due to any absences. No food allowed in class or lab at any time with the exception of covered drinks and bottled water. Break times are scheduled by the instructor at appropriate intervals. Music will be allowed in the classroom at the instructor s discretion. Respect other students and their work. Inappropriate behavior will result in deducted points and can result in disciplinary action. Any student who has special needs that may affect his or her performance in this class should identify those needs to the instructor in private.. Respect the classroom, classroom furniture and props. PRESENTATION During the course of the term each student is required to create a presentation on an artist. Please receive instructor approval before choosing an artist and beginning the report. The instructor will provide a list of acceptable artists to choose from. Report guidelines and instructions will be discussed in class. SKETCHBOOK Students are periodically required to complete sketchbook assignments. Sketchbook work will be reviewed and graded every other week. Sketchbook work will focus on life drawing and is meant to complement what is learned in class. It is recommended that students use ink pens in sketchbooks except when indicated. QUIZZES 4 quizzes will be given during the course. Quizzes are 10 points each and will test knowledge of material covered in class and presented in handouts. PORTFOLIOS Students should collect assignments completed during the course of the term in a portfolio. Portfolios will be submitted the week prior to our final exam date. FINAL DRAWING The final drawing will occur during the final week of class and will consist of a single drawing done over two class periods (approximately 6 hours).

6 Statement regarding plagiarism and academic integrity: Please be aware of Chaffey College s Student Academic Integrity Code, which can be found in the Student Handbook (page 61) and online. Integrity is an essential component of the student academic experience. The academic evaluation a student receives for a course becomes a permanent college record and it is critical that such records be accurate and consistent. The integrity students learn and exhibit at the college will be a model for the professional integrity they practice when they complete the college work. It is imperative that students understand they will not be permitted to copy (whole or a part) or directly reference any existing drawings, paintings or illustrations (well-known or not) in this class. The instructor and the college will consider this plagiarism and no credit will be earned for any painting that is a copy of another artist s work. Students who violate the Academic Integrity Code may be referred to the Dean of VPA for disciplinary action (see the Student Handbook for more information).

7 SYLLABUS Introduction to Drawing WEEK 1 introduction Review of syllabus, grading procedure and materials. Presentation, Drawing Today lecture Line: using line to describe contours lab - blind contour, left/right brain drawing, positive/negative shapes homework Students are responsible for bringing the necessary materials to class each week.
