A thorough study of figure drawing will be practiced through a strong understanding of the essential structure of the human body, problems of pictorial organization, and personal expression. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in figure drawing from the classical tradition in which this course will encourage the student to explore artistic methodologies that move beyond tradition and the academic approach to the figure. Color theory, survey of Modernist and Postmodernist art, and media experimentation are core to the overarching ideology of an intermediate figure drawing course. Through the study of 20 th century and 21 st century western art, contemporary art, and art beyond the western tradition, students will investigate expressive and experimental practices in addressing the nude figure in art. C O U R S E O B J E C T I V E S 1. Articulate use of movement, mass, cursory structure, predetermined and arbitrary color strategies in assigned drawing exercises. 2. Articulate comprehension of animal anatomy when discussing or critiquing assigned drawing studies that visually reference it, through use of distortion and abstraction of the human form. 3. Emphasis on Mannerist painting, the Renaissance model of Classical drawings and compositions. 4. Articulate, using appropriate vocabulary, the concepts of Post ( Neo ) Impressionistic drawings and compositions. 5. Critically appraise, using appropriate vocabulary and conceptual reference, the strengths and weaknesses of figure compositions. S T U D E N T L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: - Produce third level figurative and abstract compositions employing appropriate media and technique. - Employ "Mannerist" Painting, the Renaissance Model of Classical Drawings/Compositions and Post Impressionist palettes and compositions. S E R V I C E S F O R S T U D E N T S W I T H D I S A B I L I T I E S If you are a student with a disability requiring classroom accommodations, and have not contacted SSD (Services for Students with Disabilities), do so in a timely manner. 2 C L A S S P O L I C I E S 1. Attendance and tardy policy: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class meeting. Lectures and demonstrations will be given promptly at the beginning of class and will not be repeated. You are expected to be present for both lecture and lab hours. Leaving early without prior consent will be considered an unexcused absence. Attendance will be a vital part of your participation grade. The only students who may attend classes are those who have been admitted to the college and are in approved active status. Students are expected to attend every meeting of all classes for which they are registered. Violation of this regulation may result in exclusion from class as specified in Administrative Regulation E-13. Provisions of Administrative Regulation E-13 include the following: o o o o Students who have preregistered for a class and who do not attend the first meeting of the class forfeit their right to a place in the class. Special circumstances may be considered by the instructor. Whenever absences in hours exceed the number of hours the class meets per week, the instructor will consider whether there are mitigating circumstances that may justify the absences. If the instructor determines that such circumstances do not exist, the instructor may exclude the student from the class. Three cases of tardiness may be considered equivalent to one absence. It is the student s responsibility to consult with an instructor regarding any absences that would alter the student s status in the class. 2. Exclusion policy: The instructor reserves the right to exclude students from the course due to excessive absences as detailed in the Provisions of Administrative Regulation E-13. Any student who has unexcused absences totaling four or more hours of classroom time is subject to exclusion; all excused absences must be cleared with the instructor. Unacceptable behavior that is considered class disruption, such as chronic talking during lectures or cellphone usage during class, may also be grounds for exclusion. 3. Cheating policy: Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating or plagiarism will result in no credit for the assignment or exclusion or an F grade for the course. Cheating is a form of academic dishonesty. Academic Dishonesty: According to the Student Code of Conduct , academic dishonesty is defined as Dishonesty, such as cheating or knowingly furnishing false information to colleges. 4. Late policy on quiz, exam and critique days: If you are more than fifteen minutes late on a day a quiz is administered, you will not be able to take the quiz or make up for the quiz. If you are more than fifteen minutes late on a critique day, your project will not be part of the class critique. If you are more than fifteen minutes late on the final exam day, your project will not be part of the class critique, and you will receive a 10% grade reduction for the final exam project. 5. Late and redone assignments: Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments may be redone, but must be submitted two weeks before the last day of class. You may only redo one assignment. Los Angeles Valley College Art Department, under the accreditation rules of the State of California, requires that all assignments in studio courses be handed in on the due date at the beginning of the class in order to receive credit. No late work is accepted under any circumstances unless a doctor s letterhead note for illness, or a bereavement form for family death is provided for documentation. Participation in critiques, discussions and lab time is required and will be assessed as part of a student s grade. Los Angeles Valley College reserves the right to retain/archive and display assignments.
