CPPG Colored Pencil Points JUNE 2018: THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA VOLUME 7 ISSUE 6 President s Message I want to start by thanking all of our members who participated in our first Miniature Judged Show. It turned out to be beyond our expectations. A special thanks to our committee chairs and members who supported this effort: Donna Caputo, Barbara Varnadoe, Bob Koudelka, Ellen Miller, Jackie Ullrich, Alison Freeman, Diane Penci, Laura Petrera, Cathy Stone, Marsha McGill, Cheryl Gates, Ruth Paul, Sally Guerette and Charlene Chapman. Our judge for the show was Kathy Pollock, president of the Miniature Art Society of Florida. Thanks to Cathy Stone and her husband, who invited Kathy Pollock and her husband to stay in their home for two nights, making it possible for our participating artists to meet and chat with our judge during the reception on Sunday. The new exhibits are hanging at Rohan, and if you have not seen them yet, it is worth your time to go and see it. Our featured artist is Ruth Paul. I want to thank Victoria Peterson for coordinating these exhibits, and thank you Cheryl Gates, Marsha McGill, and Sue Franz for your help and support. Our activities are slowing down; however, plans for future activities continue to be

worked on behind the scene. Our Membership Committee will be busy this summer putting together the 2019 Membership Directory. If you would like to be listed in the new directory, please renew your membership for October 2018 September 30, 2019 by June 30. We have started to put together a committee to take charge of the 2018 Rohan Fall Festival on November 10. More information will follow in the July edition of the newsletter. If you would like to help out, please contact Mary Tougas, tougasfm@gmail.com, Victoria Peterson, victoriapeterson2000@yahoo.com, or Renee Conboy, renee3088@embarqmail.com. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our June 13 monthly meeting. For those of you who have gone back north for the summer, I hope you will have a great time with family and friends, and look forward to seeing you in the fall. Please remember that we will not have a monthly meeting in July, but looking forward to seeing you again in August. Renee May s Featured Artist Dawn Mastrodonato Mom s Gardenia on our frontispiece this month is by CPPG artist Dawn Mastodonato. It looks perfect for a month associated with weddings and brides. Dawn is a long-time member of CPPG, and she has won several awards for her work. She also cheers up people with fun and beautiful pictures through . Below are some of her other charming works.

May Miniature Show was a Giant Success Although the focus of May s show was on miniatures, there was nothing small about the success of this exhibition. Members showed 37 works of art, all in the same sized frames. No work exceeded 25 square inches, but the small size did not keep the pictures from being interesting and powerful works of art. First Place was awarded to Sue Franz for Old Busy Shopping Street. Second Place was awarded to Donna Caputo for Orchard Fresh.

Tom Kunnath took the third place award with Junior. Honorable Mention Awards went to Top Left: Jane Connolly Piling on the Coal ; Top Right: Joy Martin Morning Market ; Bottom: Kathy Enos Yellowstone 3

Awards of Merit were awarded to Top left: Connie Chandler Flora ; Top Right: Victoria Peterson Forest Walk ; Bottom: Charlene Chapman The Guardian

The rest of the entries in the show were miniature miracles as well

May Meeting Our 2017 Art Award Recipient Shared Her Successful First Year in College Melany Torres, our 2017 Art Award Recipient, shared with us her art from her first year at the University of South Florida. Members were impressed by the amount of art Melany produced during the year in various media. Melany s poised and wellplanned presentation assured us that our award went to a deserving participant.

Barbara Perron Engaged the Membership with an Insight into the Camp Villages Experience : Using only the three primary colors, Barb showed us how the Camp Villages volunteers teach colored pencil painting, blending, shading, and burnishing to the Camp Villages attendees. Camp Villages Colored Pencil Painting classes will be held at Big Cypress Recreation Center on June 18 and 19 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m, and on July 30 and 31 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The membership enjoyed being engaged in a morning of using our basic colored pencil skills.

Programs June 13 Meeting - Eileen Sklon Tips and tricks for taking photos with your cell phone Eileen Sklon has been a photographer for 40 years and enjoys using the many ways that she can make an image look like a painting. She will be focusing on using cell phones to take pictures and will provide tips to take better reference photos and apps to make them more artistic. July 11 Meeting cancelled Camp Villages will be using our meeting room that day August 8 Meeting Kelly Lynch Techniques for using colored pencils on Colorfix paper Kelly will display her beautiful paintings of birds and demonstrate her technique using brushes and burnishing on Colorfix paper (sandpaper like). Members will have an opportunity to follow along and use this technique to paint a feather on Colorfix paper. Paper will be provided by the Guild. Members are asked to bring a work surface, sharpener, kneaded eraser, and Prismacolor colored pencils. Pencils include warm and cool greys, black 935, white 938, bronze 1028, light umber 941, and dark umber 947. Kelly also uses a ¼ inch wide short, stiff brush for blending. If you do not own this type of brush, you can either work on your feather using her technique with just the pencils, or, optionally, bring a brush you can buy at On the site, choose Pat Lentine s blender and the small blender brush for $6. Contact Diane Dumas at or ddumas100@comcast.net with any questions.

Product Review: Derwent Pencil Sharpener by Jan Jones You are probably going to think that I need my head examined, and you would be correct. Why? I bought ANOTHER pencil sharpener. But this sharpener is so cute, how could I resist? Notice in the photo that it looks like a revival of a 100-year-old sharpener with a hand crank. I just had to give it a try. After I received it, I took it into a workshop at Laurel Manor and enlisted the help of my fellow artists to help rate this cutie. Well, the cutie fast turned into a ####@@@^^^^^!!! I broke so many tips off my pencils I had to enlist the help of Joe Krizek to dislodge them when I couldn t do it. Well, that was until Cheryl Gates read the directions and told me that I could take it apart and easily view the interior mechanism to dislodge the offending tip myself. But why were the tips breaking off anyway? Well, more instructions were read, and, lo and behold, I was finally able to sharpen a pencil to one of the longest, sharpest points I have ever seen! The group cheered my success but were probably disappointed that the howls of laughter would now change to murmurs of appreciation. I think the other workshop attendees, however, were probably delighted that some peace and quiet might now allow them to enjoy doing their art. Because you need to see the long sharp point this sharpener makes, I took a photo of one for you. I really love the long point because I don t have to sharpen the pencil as often. But, did I think that this Derwent sharpener would become my number one go-to sharpener? No, I didn t because there are several steps you have to take prior to sharpening the pencil that were aggravating to me. I was giving this sharpener a rating of 1 out of 5 stars. At home I took the sharpener out while I worked on a new project. I used it once, twice, 20 times and I began to really like it. The points are fantastic! No batteries, just a hand crank. Only a few turns of the crank and, voila!, a point to rival the best of the sharpeners. Quiet, no aggravating noise like the electrical sharpeners. Tiny and easy to transport. It can be clamped to the table so it doesn t move around, but I prefer just to hold it. My rating has now changed to a 4 out of 5 stars. I m sure that is an enormous surprise to my fellow artist-evaluators and me, too!

Derwent Super Point Mini Manual Pencil Sharpener ( ) on Amazon $18.66 Oh, no, while I was looking this one up on Amazon to find a price for you, I found another Derwent sharpener similar to this that costs $ Hmmm, I wonder if it is a new and improved version of my model??... Announcements Sunshine If you know of a member who is ill, recovering from surgery, or has had a death in the family, please let me know. I ll send that member an appropriate card on behalf of our Guild. Eleanor Kinney T-Shirts Just a reminder that I have some T-Shirts in stock for sale, or if you prefer, you can bring in a T-shirt or Polo shirt of your choice, and I will be happy to put the logo on the shirt at the cost of $ You can also just buy the logo for $ If you have any questions, please give me a call. Thanks, Don t forget to submit pictures to be featured in CPPG Pencil Points! We need submissions for future issues. Send them to routtejane88@gmail.com. Don t be shy!! We want to see your work!!
