Ohio St., Fortville, IN Meeting Minutes, August 12th, 2018 The August club meeting was held at the home of Jerry & Colleen Dixon in Muncie, Indiana. Our club President and Vice President were not available for the meeting. Club Secretary Joe Coulson opened the meeting and welcomed the following members: Jerry & Colleen Dixon, Harold Hagadone, Monty Foust, Dave & Kay Rittenhouse, Mike Mosier, Jim Durr, and Mark Hoyt. Joe Coulson mentioned that he had talked to Dick Cole the day before the club meeting. Dick was recovering from another episode of poor health and had been in a rehabilitation facility to help him gain strength to walk again. He was in good spirits but not well enough to attend the club picnic meeting. Mike James had a family event to attend. Colleen Dixon reported that she and Jerry had attended the FOHBC National Show in Cleveland and had a good time. They ran into several fellow club members at the event. Colleen attended the seminar presented by club member Tom Sproat on the Hemingray glass company. Colleen attended the FOHBC awards banquet and accepted a club contest award for our club thanks to Marty Troxell s efforts (more details in the next newsletter). Colleen & Jerry also shared a copy of the large souvenir booklet produced for the show. Our club had placed an ad in the booklet. Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for August, and the club continues to maintain a positive bank balance without much activity in the last month. Dave Rittenhouse will be sending out contracts very soon for our 2019 Muncie January Show. If you wish to be a dealer or do an exhibit you will need to complete a contract. The last few months of this year will go by quickly, so start planning now for the January Show. 2 Page 2 Show and Tell The theme for Show and Tell was to bring items that were recent purchases. Colleen Dixon displayed a clear HG (RB #1489 / SFJR #1301) Trademark Lightning; and a set of four aqua HP (RB #3031 / SFJR #1402) Woodbury WGW Trademark Sterilizer jars in their original wire basket. These items were purchased at the Cleveland, Ohio National Show. Colleen also displayed two jars which were purchased this year at the Shupps Grove Show: an aqua 20 oz. unembossed jar with a Kline stopper; and an aqua HG unembossed jar with a Haller stopper. Colleen also mentioned that she learned that one of the Dalbey jars was made by Hemingray according to research by Tom Sproat. Colleen had attended Tom s seminar on Hemingray Glass Co. at the recent National Show. Monty Foust shared an olive with amber swirls HG (RB #274 / SFJR #149) Ball (dropped a ) Perfect Mason. The color and swirls were very appealing to the eye. It was a special treat to have Harold Hagadone attend our club meeting. Harold is a moderator for the Ball Jar Collectors Facebook group which has over 8,000 members. Our very own lub member Marty Troxell created the group and is an Administrator. Harold s motto is Smile, and he smiled the whole time he was with us at the club meeting. We were glad to have him. Harold spent time visiting Marty Troxell the day before. It was about a 3 hour one-way trip for Harold to come here. Harold brought an amber U.S. Tobacco Co. jar which was a recent purchase from Marty. It was roughly quart size with a ground mouth and the shape of a melon. The base had the company maker s mark on it. Harold collects cigar and tobacco jars in addition to fruit jars. Harold told us that this particular tobacco jar comes in a lot of colors such as cobalt blue, shades of amber, and a lighter yellow. Harold said that he has been collecting for 5 years now. He is looking for variations in the Globe tobacco jars. There are 5 different variations in the embossing. He loves the history of jars who made them and why. Harold s collection is up to 410 jars now. Mike Mosier shared a clear QT ATLA (figure of four leaf clover) Good Luck jar (missing the letter S in AT- LAS); and a lugged midget screw cap (outside: HFJCo in cross) (inside: Ball Bros. Glass Mf g. Co. Buffalo N.Y.). Dave Rittenhouse brought a clear PT (RB #567 / SFJR #252) unembossed (on glass lid: Patd Dec ) with an original product label for Stickemphast Paste; an aqua QT (RB # / SFJR #1261) Swayzee s Improved Mason with amber swirls on front; an aqua PT (RB #663 / SFJR #304) The Crandall & Godley Co. / Perfecto Fruit Juices New York; an amber Coca-Cola bottle (heel: Muncie, Ind.); and an SCA whimsy in the form of a turtle. Dave and Mike James were able to acquire the remainder of Lou Ebert s jars from Lou s nephew. Joe Coulson shared a clear PT drinking mug (Mason threaded finish) (front: Golden Harvest figure) (reverse heel: Not for Home Canning); a clear QT (RB #590 / SFJR #266) Chef Trademark The Berdan Co. Pat d July (old style Lightning closure); and a Ball blue PT Avon product jar in its original box (sold as Country Peaches, there was soap inside the jar which was made to look like peach halves) (jar made by Ball). All three of Joe s purchases came from the most recent Johnson County Antique Flea Market held in Franklin, Indiana. Mark Hoyt brought a case of Robert Hoyt Saint Gobain employee retirement wine bottles to give away to meeting attendees! 5 Page 5 Bygone Muncie: Developers had big plans for 'West Muncie' [This article appeared in The Star Press newspaper (Muncie, Indiana) July 22, 2018; written by Chris Flook, president of the Delaware County Historical Society] On New Year s Day in 1892, the Western Improvement Company filed a plat for the Village of West Muncie. Extending from both sides of Buck Creek in what is today Yorktown, West Muncie was the grand, albeit highly speculative dream of Muncie capitalists, out-of-state financiers, and the Big Four Railroad. Working through the Western Improvement Company, they attempted one of the most ambitious real estate ventures to occur during the east-central Indiana Gas Boom. The foremost feature of West Muncie was Delaware Lake, a mile and a half long, 2,000 wide body of water that filled Buck Creek s floodplain. The lake ran between what is now Cornbread Road and Bell Creek Road. You might be saying to yourself, But wait, there is no lake there! And of course this is true today, but 126 years ago, you could take a pleasure cruise on Carey Crozier s steam boat, absorbing the bucolic awesomeness of Buck Creek Valley. Delaware Lake was artificial, constructed when Western Improvement erected an earthen dam just north of the current Cornbread Road bridge. To see Delaware Lake s general outline, click on Google Maps Terrain View for this area. On the lake s north bank, the aptly named Lake View Hotel offered guests 70 rooms as a respite from the horrors of Victorian industrialization. The hotel was accompanied by a boat house, dance pavilion and a 30-acre wooded park. Western Improvement s ambitions weren t limited to bougie leisures, however. In an effort to capitalize on the abundant natural gas, developers brought in several industrial concerns including aluminum, jewelry and outhouse factories, a grist mill, a nail factory, a strawboard plant, the Skillen- Gooden Glass Works, the Patterson Glass Works and the Novelty Works and Tack Factory. Western Improvement offered free factory sites and free natural gas for businesses willing to locate operations in the nascent town. The Big Four Railroad built a handsome two-story depot to unload guests. Almost 100 houses were built and many more lots platted for expected residents. The grandeur that Western Improvement sought for West Muncie was impressive. A contemporaneous plat map shows not only Lake View Hotel and Delaware Lake, but also over 100 residential blocks, curving boulevards, and an epic public square with radiating avenues. Western Improvement even had a plan for Yorktown, the pesky little 1837 village that was quite literally a stone s throw away. It was to be annexed and renamed as Oldtown district. I highly encourage readers to stop by the Yorktown-Mount Pleasant Historical Alliance to see the map. The Alliance also has several pertinent photos, documents and West Muncie abstracts. Lake View Hotel had a soft opening on Nov. 26, 1892 followed by a grand opening on Feb. 22, Hosted by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the gala was described in a local paper as a brilliant social event, attended by nearly four hundred persons, representing the elite of Muncie society, with a large number of guests from different parts of the state. However, an omen had occurred seven days prior, when heavy rains broke the dam, costing $10,000 in damage and partially draining the lake. The dam was fixed and the valley re-flooded. Yet, the whole West Muncie venture came crashing down later that summer after the Panic of Because of the Gas Boom, East Central Indiana largely escaped unscaithed, but out-of-state Western Improvement financiers did not. As a result, the Lake View Hotel languished and the anticipated guests never arrived. New housing development in West Muncie slowed, then ceased altogether. New business didn t materialize and what was in operation either went into receivership, or burned down. An employee of a principal investor, the First National Bank of Watkins, New York, absconded with $50,000. Western Improvement went into default and was sued by creditors. The Panic caused a depression for most of the 1890s, hindering new outside investment. Muncie industrialists also realized that the weather only five miles from Muncie was still uncomfortably hot in summer, thus opting for resorts farther north. Then, a smallpox outbreak placed Muncie under quarantine later in fall. Finally, the coup de grâce occured at the end of July After a month of torrential rains, the lake became so full that the dam and bridge were swept away and the water drained into the White River. Lake View Hotel was sold to the Skillen family, who took up residence for a few years. Eventually, the hotel was torn down and any salvageable materials were reused in other structures. Yorktown eventually grew to encompass most of what was to become West Muncie. In 1959, Montgomery Shroyer reminisced to Dick Greene that around 1900, I plowed up streets and building lots. And so the invasion of Muncie into Yorktown stopped...at least for a time. Examples of The Leader fruit jar provided by Joe Coulson. These and The Best Fruit-Keeper were made in West Muncie

8 Page 8 Hemingray by the Numbers by Joe Coulson I had fun putting together this small collection of unembossed wax sealers (RB #3047 / SFJR #C7) made by the Hemingray glass company. In the language of jar collecting, a wax sealer generally refers to a jar with a groove ring (also known as a channel) around the top. The home canner would melt some sealing wax (also known as cement) and use a ladle to pour the hot wax into the groove. A tin cap would then be pressed down into this ring of hot wax. The wax would cool and harden to create an air-tight seal. When the preserved food was needed, the home canner could warm the wax (with the jar upside down in hot water) to loosen the seal to get the cap off. In many cases it seems the cap was chipped out of the wax. The household common term in the mid-1800 s to the early 1900 s for this type of wax sealer jar was Union or Standard jar. Those terms appear in advertisements of that time period and are also sometimes embossed on the side of the jar. The accompanying pictures show one type of wax sealer made by the Hemingray glass company. The jars have no embossing other than a large number on the base. This style of number is also found on other jars made by the Hemingray glass company, such as the popular Globe jars. It is a very distinctive style. The numbers are generally thick and have pronounced serifs. For this particular wax sealer, I have been able to find base numbers from 1 through 7. It is interesting to note that the base number 2 jar is only found in half gallon size, and all the other numbers in quart size. It took me a few years to put this set together, and they are not too hard to find in the aqua shades shown. Quarts in cornflower blue and black olive have been reported. If you have any additional information on these unembossed Hemingray wax sealers, I would appreciate hearing from you (contact info is on the left side of the front page of the newsletter). I would be particularly interested in knowing base numbers of the nonaqua jars, and if there are any other base numbers out there.
