Brook Dr., Muncie, IN Meeting Minutes, February 5th, 2012 The February club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club Vice President Dick Cole opened the meeting and welcomed 12 members. Dave and Kay Rittenhouse were not able to attend due to commitments at a church function. Dick said that we needed to decide the topics for future club meetings. A discussion occurred, and the following meeting topics were decided upon: March, bring your most valuable item (sentimental, monetary, etc.); April, bring an item with your Town on it (where you were born, lived, etc.); May, bring items made of milkglass, including white, green, blue, or Show and Tell The theme for the February meeting was recent purchases, especially those made at the January Show. Joe Coulson started by displaying a nice dead leaf green wine bottle that he acquired from fellow club member Mike James. Mike recently retired from Verallia. The company made a special retirement bottle for him. They even game him the original molds for the bottle! opaque glass; June, bring something jar related with a "War" theme (WWI, WWII, etc. ); July, multiple day Jar-B-Q event at Signature Inn; August, club picnic, bring a recent purchase; September, bring the first jar you acquired; October, Alphabet Lottery letters will be drawn at the September meeting (bring an item that begins with the letter you drew); November, to be determined; December, annual Christmas dinner and gift exchange (dirty Santa game). The complete list of club meeting dates and topics is posted on the club website, and it is kept up-to-date. Colleen Dixon gave the Treasurer s report for January. Expenses included the cost of Joe also displayed a metal beverage container made by Ball Corporation. This can was special because it was meant to provide drinking water to the victims of hurricane Katrina in Joe talked about how a presentation box of Ball Corp. zinc blazer buttons had been shown around at the January Show. A woman who had worked at the Ball Foundation (charitable organization) in printing Club T-shirts for resale, and the renewal of the club website hosting. Income was received from 23 members renewing their memberships. The club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. See you all at the next club meeting, Joe Coulson, Secretary

2 Page 2 Show and Tell, cont d I GOT YOUR ICE COLD NUGRAPE Muncie had a box that she was asking for more info about. No one had seen them before. She said that this box came from Mr. Ball (Edmund F. Ball), and that she also had a blazer with these buttons on them. It s possible these were made just for Ball executives. A couple of weeks after the January Show, Joe was able to acquire an identical box of Ball Corp. zinc blazer buttons from an ebay auction. This box of buttons was sold by someone out West. What a coincidence that a similar box would come up for sale so soon! Joe shared one more recently acquired item. It was a wood-jacketed tin kerosene can. It looked almost identical to the one shown in an original advertising booklet of the Ball Brothers from Buffalo, New York. This may very well be one of their early company products! Lou Ebert shared a purchase that he had made at the Off Broadway Antique Mall in Muncie. It was an aqua 10 oz NU-GRAPE soda bottle (base: Miami FL) (heel: L.G.W.). NuGrape is a brand of grapeflavored soda pop. The NuGrape brand was invented in 1906, first bottled in 1921, and by April 1933, The National NuGrape Company was founded in Atlanta, Georgia. Lou brought a CD player and played a recording of a radio advertising for NU- GRAPE from Gusty Monaghan shared a 1980 acrylic coin container that was made by Ball Corp. in celebration of their 100 year I got a NuGrape nice and fine The rings around the bottle is a-genuine I got a NuGrape nice and fine Got plenty imitation but there's none like mine 'Way down yonder in the promised land A-run and tell your mama here the NuGrape man Little childrens in the backyard playing in the sand, A-run and tell your mama here the NuGrape man (Humming) When you're feeling kinda blue Do not know what's ailing you Get a NuGrape from the store Then you'll have the blues no more What's that make your lips go flipp-i-ty Flop a-when you drink a NuGrape you don't know when to stop If from work you come home late Rollin' pin waits at the gate Smiling, bribe her with NuGrape Then you'll sneak through in good shape Sister Mary has a beau Says he's crazy, loves her so Buys a NuGrape every day Know he's bound to win that way (Humming) Recorded by the NUGRAPE TWINS on Nov. 2, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia for Columbia. You can listen to a recording online at: This product is still being produced today:

Mike and Gusty toured the distillery on his birthday. Evan Williams began distilling in 1783 near Louisville, Kentucky after emigrating from Wales. Sue also shared an aqua quart Ball Mason that had a ghosted 3rd L and MASON was very faint. Anne Szopa displayed a clear Golden Tree Maple Syrup jar; a sun-colored amethyst quart jar that had a tapered body and was unembossed; and an aqua pint unembossed jar. Jean Harbron displayed an aqua pint The Marion Jar Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH Jean brought a delicious treat to share with everyone. She brought a jar of black raspberry jam that she had preserved, and she brought crackers to go with it! Bruce Schank displayed a clear bottle that was embossed Trademark Dr. Balls. Bruce liked this bottle because of the name on it, and because he collects Ball jars. Bruce shared a rare green pint solid pour jar that was embossed Ball Improved Masons Patent This jar was very heavy because it was solid glass. the club at the January Show. He is very excited about collecting Indiana jars. He displayed a clear quart Mason (fancy looped underscore) screw thread; and a clear quart Mason (fancy looped underscore) wax sealer. Dick Cole shared a dead leaf green wine bottle commemorating Mike James retirement; a clear quart Longaberger jar with matching Longaberger lid; a slide rule with the Ball logo (made between ); and an acrylic playing card case made in 1980 for Ball Corporation s 100 year anniversary (it contained two unopened decks of playing cards). Sue Wilson displayed a clear quart Ball Eclipse Widemouth with a lid that had a carnival glass color (?). It s possible the glass batch for the lid had too much selenium, or maybe it was a contaminated batch. Jean also shared two green Depression glass jelly jars. The first jelly glass was American Jelly Glasses (AJG) #116, and the second was AJG #118. Bruce also brought copies of his poem, Jar Bling, that he had professionally framed. These prints were for sale. Everyone welcomed Monty Foust to his first jar club meeting. Monty joined
