8 Midwest Glass Chatter July 2017 Page 8 Sunshine and Your Collection by Richard Cole If you think that this article is about how sunlight will turn a clear jar into a sun-colored amethyst jar, then I am sorry. The process by which the manganese dioxide that once was used to decolorize glass will turn some shade of purple/pink/amethyst when exposed to sunlight has been studied over the years and is well-known to most collectors. What I want to talk about is how sunlight will affect other objects in your collection. What other objects? you ask. Well, how about lids? As an example, here are two lids, both are modern, made within the past few years. Both were made at the former Ball Corp/Alltrista/Jarden lid plant in Muncie. They were made at the same time and packed into the same box. But one is pink while the other is a darker red. So, what caused this difference? A malfunction in the coating process? Nope. When I took them out of the box, they were the same color dark red like the one on the right. What did I do to make the lid on the left a different shade of red? The answer: I took the lids out of the box and put them in a stack on a display shelf in front of a window. Then I left them there for about a year. (Ok, I am lazy and I don t clean my house often. I won t deny it.) When I finally picked the lids up to put them back in the box, I noticed that the topmost lid in the stack was pink in color, while the lid on the bottom of the stack was still its original dark red color. Now, you might think that I am telling you a whopper, that I am just making this all up. Would I do such a thing like that? On second thought - don t answer that question! But I can prove my case this time. Here is a photo of the second lid in the stack, the one directly below the topmost lid that turned completely pink. You can see that there was sufficient space between the two lids to let a small amount of sunlight shine through. So only part of the lid turned pink. You can easily tell which side was facing the window. Interestingly, it was a north-facing window that I put the stack of lids in. This means that it does not require direct sunlight for this effect to occur. Artists, billboard designers and housepainters are all well aware that colors fade with time, especially outdoors in the sunlight. Certainly, things like acid rain and physical abrasion from wind, snow and sleet will have an impact on color, but the primary cause of fading is exposure to sunlight. Cave paintings done by prehistoric man still retain their original hues, because there has been no exposure to sunlight in the depths of caves, along with a constant temperature. Not to get too far into physics, it is the ultraviolet (UV) component of sunlight that causes colors to fade. Many art galleries use a special film on their windows that blocks the UV part of the sunlight, thus preventing fading while allowing some natural light to get inside. Years ago, a collector of Ball salt & pepper shakers published a list of the different variations that she had found. She listed about half-a-dozen shades of red-colored lids, that ranged from red to pink. She was not aware that the shade of the color of the lid was a not a function of its original color, but rather how long the shaker had sat on a breakfast table, soaking up the sunlight. You might have noticed another interesting fact related to colors and their fading: the color red fades faster than other colors. Much faster than blue, for example. The lids on the Ball shakers mentioned above were one red and one blue. The red lids faded while the blue ones did not. What else in your collection could suffer the effects of sunlight fading besides shaker lids? How about jar boxes?

9 Midwest Glass Chatter July 2017 Page 9 Sunshine and Your Collection, cont d Will this box fade if it is put on a shelf where it is exposed to sunlight? The definitive answer is: Maybe. It all depends upon what pigment was used to make the printing red. If it was an organic compound, the label will fade. If an inorganic compound was used, it will not fade. How can you tell which one was used? The answer is you can t. Except by exposing it to sunlight and seeing what happens. But if it fades, then it is too late. The reaction is not reversible. On a side note, the reaction that turns a clear jar to SCA is supposed to be reversible. Putting an SCA jar in an oven at a hot enough temperature for a couple of hours will turn it clear. At least that is what is claimed. I have never tried it myself, so I cannot say for certain. On a similar note, I have heard that jars that have been irradiated to turn them SCA will start to fade when exposed to sunlight. Amazing how powerful sunlight is. Back to your collection, there are some things that are red that will not fade in sunlight. Glass that has been decorated with an Applied Color Label (or more technically correct Applied Color Lettering, both commonly referred to as ACL ) is perfectly safe to put into the sunlight. Here is an example of what I am talking about: This bottle was made by Knox Glass, probably in the 1940s or 1950s, and the red color in the ACL is still bright and vivid. Why? The pigment that was used is inorganic and is not affect by heat. Heat is used to melt the ceramic ink into the surface of the glass. The ceramic inks that are used are heat-resistant therefore are also sunlight-resistant. So why aren t these sunlight-resistant inks used for box ends and shaker lids? Because most inorganic reds (and yellows) are made from cadmium and chromium compounds. These two elements have the nasty habit of causing cancer, so their use around food products is banned, a wise decision. In conclusion, is exposure to sunlight an important factor to consider in protecting your collection? Absolutely. When the late Jeff Harper built a room to house his collection, he built one with no windows. I never asked him why. Maybe it was out of necessity, or for security purposes. But I like to think that he wanted to provide maximum protection for all aspects of his collection. And that sunlight was a factor. I suspect that many of you who are reading this article were already familiar with the effects of sunlight, but hopefully we have provided a little more information to help you keep what you have in the best condition possible. Yes, it is nice to have natural sunlight beaming through those lovely aqua jars, but be aware of the possible negative side effects. Artifacts are from the author s collection. Photographs are by the author. by Richard Cole
