Club President Dick Cole opened the meeting and welcomed 9 club members. In attendance at the meeting were: Dick Cole, Mike James, Dave Rittenhouse, Lou Ebert, Colleen & Jerry Dixon, Mike Mosier, Monty Foust, and Jim Durr. The minutes from the previous meeting as published in the newsletter were accepted. Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for June. The Show and Tell The theme for the June meeting was to bring Product jars, bottles or something you would like to show. Monty Foust shared a clear QT (RB11 #2603 / SFJR #1175) Sealtite (with product label for Anchor brand Sweet Mixed Pickles / J. Wagoner / St. Louis); and an SCA QT (RB 11 #315 / SFJR #163) Ball (2-L logo) Standard (made on a Bingham machine). club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. Mike James led a discussion on upcoming meeting dates and topics. The club website has been updated with the latest information. The last page of the newsletter also has the updated information. Mike James also had some suggestions on how to help make the auction run more smoothly at the January Fruit Jar Get-Together. Jim Durr suggested we specify times when a member should try to pay dues to avoid conflicts with taking money for any auction donated items. Dave brought flyers for the Winter 2018 Muncie Show for people Lou Ebert shared a newspaper advertisement from 1899 by the Indiana Brewing Assoc n, Marion, Ind. The ad showed six of the Pride of the State labeled bottles, and it mentioned Bottle brands: Pride of the State / Our Special Brew and Keg brands: Weiner / Bavarian / Budweiser. Lou also shared an Indiana Brewing Association embossed beer bottle with a label to distribute where they could. The next club meeting will be held July 9th at Minnetrista in the Cantina at 1:30pm in Muncie, Indiana. The theme is to bring Advertising jars, bottles and advertisements for glass companies". The Indiana Brewing Association operated from November 1897 to July 3, 1913 at which time 1,916 barrels of beer were dumped into the Mississinewa River. The Kiley Brewing Co. Inc. of Marion, Indiana operated from April 1934 to April 1, 1942 when it was sold to Peter Fox Brewing Co. of Chicago. The Fox De Luxe Brewing Co. of Indiana Inc. operated until the end of December The buildings in Marion, Indiana were torn down in October Mike Mosier displayed a clear quart Swedish-made jar with a paper product label P. Hakanssons Konserver / felix. The jar looked like a Ball wide mouth jar. It still had its original contents which Mike thought were beets. Mike also displayed a clear QT (RB11 #1501 / SFJR #1308) Trade Mark / Lightning / Registered / U.S. Patent Office (reverse applied colored label in black: figure of Negro eating / Pickled Melon Rind / Aughinbaugh Canning Co. / Baltimore, Maryland) (base : Putnam); a Ball blue 22 ounces (RB11 #320-5 / SFJR #168) Packed in St. Johnsbury, VT / By the Towle Maple Products Co. / Ball (2-L) Sure Seal; and a clear QT (RB11 #2526 / SFJR #1142) Safe (base: Made By The Safe Glass Co. / Pat Feb Upland Ind. Mike James shared an aqua QT (RB11 #584 / SFJR #264.2) Champion Syrup / Refining Co / Indianapolis; a green PT (RB11 #2963) White King / Washes / Everything (base: White King) (upside down embossing, soap dispenser jar); a light green product bottle embossed Packed By / Hulman Preserving Co / Terre Haute, Ind. ; a small clear bottle embossed KKK, side KKK Medicine Co, other side Keokuk, Iowa ; and an SCA bottle embossed J.B. Freeland & Son / Pure Horse Radish / Terre Haute, Ind. Dick Cole brought a clear PT Ball Wide Mouth that was not formed properly oval shape (reverse: fruit medallion; sides: ounce markings; neck: freezing fill to here); and a clear half pint jar that was not formed properly oval shape (base: Ball Quilted Crystal U.S.A.). Dick also brought a metal box with the following embossing: New Departure Div. / G.M.C. / Bristol Meriden / Return to Ball Plant. Dick wondered if this was related to Ball Brothers or not. [Editor s note: After doing some online research, it appears that this item was for the New Departure subsidiary of General Motors Corporation which made ball bearings for a variety of military purposes during World War II. More details can be found here: orldwartwo.com/general%2 0Motors/newdeparture.htm ] Jerry Dixon displayed a Pluto watch fob (bronze with red and white enamel) (back: French Lick Springs Hotel Co. / T. Taggart, Pres. / French Lick, Ind. / Home of Pluto Water / Greenduck Co., Chicago); and a clear PT (RB11 #431) Beech Nut Trade Mark (with nut and leaf design) (not correct lid) (base: Patented July 11th 1893 I.P.G.). Dave Rittenhouse shared an amber PT (RB11 #2364 / SFJR #1055.5) Phoenix Surgical / Dressing Co. / Milwaukee, / Wis; a clear PT (RB11 # / SFJR #1261) Swayzee s Improved Mason; a clear PT (RB11 #2321-1) Trade Mark Pearl Registered (base: Commercial Export Co. N.Y. / Pat July 11th 1893); a light green QT (RB11 #1805 / SFJR #827.5) Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858 (reversed N in Patent and Nov.) 6 Page 6 Mike Mosier shared this Swedish jar. The product labels says P. Hakanssons Konserver / En felix product / Original felix. This clear quart jar looks similar to a Ball wide mouth jar. The neck is embossed Hygel Sida (meaning bail side?). The glass top seal lid is embossed Limmared. It is interesting to note that there is a glass plant in Limmared, Sweden currently owned by the Ardagh Group. The name felix is a registered trademark held by P. Hakanssons Konserver Aktiebolag since December 22, 1953 for fruit and berry preserves, jams, marmalades, fruit syrups for food purposes, pickles, sauces, mustard, canned meatballs, canned beef, and canned corn beef hash. Dave Rittenhouse shared these design plates with raised embossing. They were used by Ball Corporation to create the retirement jar for company President, John W. Fisher. Items like this are rare go-withs. The plates on the first row are shown next to their matching sides on the final production jar on the second row.

Announcements When Ball employees retired in the mid 1980 s to early 2000 s commemorative canning jar lids were handed out at their company retirement party. As you can imagine, these lids were produced in very limited quantities. The lids had the company logo (which eventually changed from Ball to Alltrista), a picture of the retiree, their name, and their years of service. This is a Ball jar collecting category all by itself, and new lids continue to be discovered by collectors. At least 22 different retirement lids are currently known. Upcoming club meetings: Sunday, July 9th, 2017, 1:30pm meet at Minnetrista. Theme is to bring "Advertising jars, bottles and advertisements for glass companies". Sunday, August 13th, 2017, 1:30pm meet at the home of Jerry and Colleen Dixon for our annual club picnic: 2602 W. Brook Drive, Muncie, Indiana; phone Member bring: chairs, small veggie or fruit and a small dessert. Club will provide: meat, plates, cups, tableware, soda. Theme is to bring "Your Choice, any item you would like to show". Sunday, September 10th, 2017, 1:30pm meet at Minnetrista. Theme is to bring "Labeled jars or bottles (Any type of label, paper, embossing in glass, paint applied label, plastic)". Our club is a member of the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC). The FOHBC has many resources and interesting articles on their website as well as a list of bottle shows: Consider becoming a member of the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors if you are not already a member. Support bottle and jar collecting as well as receive their excellent bi-monthly publication: Our club is a member club of the FOHBC! Make your plans now for the National Show which is in Springfield, Massachusetts this year: The next North American Glass auction opens on July 3rd. On offer will be 413 lots of quality glassware items. Featured in this sale are items from the 40-year collection of Mr. Jan Hall of Red Lion, PA.
