Oak St. Anderson, IN Anne Szopa, Treas U.S. Highway 35 Economy, IN Joe Coulson, Sec Collingswood Ln. Fishers, IN Norman Barnett, Pres. Emeritus P.O. Box 38 Flat Rock, IN Membership The Midwest Glass Chatter is a monthly publication and is a forum through which collectors can share information. Membership cost is $15.00 per year, per family, due each December 31. All jar/bottle related collectors are welcome. Send to MAFJBC, Attn: Joe Coulson, Collingswood Ln, Fishers, IN Next Club Show July 13, 2008 Make your reservation now! The hotel s phone number is Meeting Minutes February 3, 2008 The February club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club President Dave Rittenhouse opened the event and welcomed 14 members. Dave passed around a Best-Wishes card for Phil Robinson. Phil was not able to make the meeting, and is preparing for a medical procedure on Feb. 7th. We all wish Phil well. Anne Szopa gave the treasurer s report. The 50/50 raffle at our January Show generated $90 for the club. The raffle winner was Gerry Phifer. The expenses for the show were $1200 and there was $2500 in income. This resulted in a $1300 profit for the club. Dave told us that 68 sales tables we sold for the January Show. Dealers came from 12 different states as well as Canada. There were 155 people that came through the door (paid admissions). An article appeared in the Muncie Star on the Monday after the show. Kay Rittenhouse was apologetic about the hard donuts. They were supposed to be fresh, but maybe we were given day old ones. Marty Troxell volunteered to get donuts for the July Show. He knows of a place where they will be sure to be baked 3 to 4 hours before he picks them up on Show day. The price of the donuts will be very reasonable too. Dave reminded us that it is time to send in our membership dues for If you have not sent in your dues then please do that real soon. Kay brought up the idea of a new club T-Shirt to be sold at our jar shows. We have sold most of the old stock. Chuck Herb sent in a new pattern that we might use. Phyllis Pahlman sent in a pattern that is similar to the one used for the Jelly Jammer buttons. The purpose of the T-Shirts is not to make money, but rather to promote our hobby and our club. A motion was made for Kay to pursue the production of new club T-Shirts. The motion was seconded and passed. Dave mentioned that our upcoming July Show will be close in time to the August FOHBC Expo. We need to be thinking about advertising now. Dave suggested that mailing flyers to known collectors (outside of our club) might help to increase awareness. Marty Troxell thought that putting a show flyer in an Ebay listing could help (other clubs have done this). Anne felt that we should keep doing ads in Antique Weekly, An- tique Bottle & Glass Collector, and the FOHBC Bottles & Extras because of their wide circulation. Kay said that she would send Thank You letters to all of the dealers that attended our last show. [Editor s note: Your February newsletter is being mailed at the same time as your March newsletter. I had a terrible case of the flu, but I am back on my feet again. I know many of you enjoy the jar pictures and news items in each and every issue. I apologize for the delay.] The April 6th club meeting will be at Minnetrista at 1:30pm in the Cantina. Bring jar shipping cartons, wood boxes, or original product packaging. Joe Coulson, Secretary

Page 2 Show and Tell jar (originally held gauze); and a clear HP (unlisted) Ball R jelly glass, which was embossed on the front with Discover Dolton 1986 Ball / Ball Glass Cont / R.A.U. W.A.J., and on the reverse with Village of Dolton Illinois 1892 (around eagle medallion) J. Michael Peck Mayor, and on the base with the Ball logo. Sue also displayed an aqua QT #1974 Mason s SGCo Patent Nov. 30 TH Mike Keith displayed a set (PT, QT, HG) of the opalized aqua #234 Ball Mason jars. Mike was able to complete the set by buying the pint from Mason Bright at the show. Club members were asked to bring items they purchased at the January Show, and any other recent purchases that they wished to share. Lou Ebert started us off with a collection of paperweights that he has gradually added to over the years. These paper-weights were special because they were made by glass factory workers. Glass whimsies like these are sometimes called End-ofday pieces, but many were made on lunch break. Workers generally had an hour at noon for lunch. Workers made many different types of whimsies: paper-weights, darners, rolling pins, canes, or modifications to fruit jars and jelly jars (such as miniature hats). The first paper-weight that Lou showed had the word IVY inside of it. This was made in the early 1890 s for his Grandmother! Lou brought a total of eight beautiful paper-weights of varying styles. Mike also shared an amber HP #2909 Wan-eta Cocoa Boston product jar. Mike told us that this jar was his wife s (Krystal) very first unguided purchase in the fruit jar world, and the jar was obtained while room hopping. Mike Mosier shared this amber pickle jar from Sanborn, Parker & Co. Sue Wilson brought a clear HG #424 Beaver jar with wonderful bubbles in it; and an amber QT (unlisted) Wilson Malt Extract Co. Ltd Dundin (base: Made in NZ). This company coincidentally had the same last name as Sue! Sue displayed an aqua PT #1934 Mason s GCCo Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858; and a clear QT #1958 Mason s KGBCo Patent Nov. 30 TH Mike s last item was an SCA (purple) QT Ball 2L Sure Seal (with peened out 3rd L). Mike Mosier was up next, and he displayed a scarce aqua PT #1782 Christmas Mason (with THE BALL JAR on the reverse). Mike also showed two different N-scale model train cars representing the Muncie & Western Ball Line; and a clear (with gray tint to the Anne Szopa shared several jars that she acquired at the January Show. The jars were as follows: an aqua QT #491-4 Boyd Mason (Mason in banner) made by Illinois Glass Co. in Alton, IL (according to Dick Roller in SFJR); an amber HP # Johnson & Johnson product

Page 3 Show and Tell, cont d glass) QT #238 Ball Mason. Colleen Dixon showed us a pretty cornflower blue QT Trademark Lightning Registered U.S. Patent Office (base: Putnam). This jar had lots of seed bubbles in the glass. Dave also showed a wooden shipping box for the Redkey Glass Co. (box had a picture of a Mason s GCCo Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858 jar and mentioned Quarts, but only Pints are known). Joe Coulson displayed a couple of cardboard shipping boxes from the 1930 s: one was for round Ball (dropped a ) Ideal HP jars (1931), and the other was for round Ball (undropped a ) Ideal PT jars (1937). Joe was able to purchase quite a few boxes from Marty at the show. Mike displayed an attractive amber (unlisted) Sanborn Parker & Co. (shield) Boston Pickles jar. It had a very crude appearance. Marty Troxell displayed a wooden shipping box for Plymouth-Rock Brand Apple Butter (Sprague Warner Co.). Marty also showed us a couple of jars in eye-popping colors: a light yellow QT Mason s (cross) Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858; and a lime or apple green midget PT Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858 (with cross symbol on reverse). Jean Harbron displayed a very unusual ruby red jelly glass. This glass originally contained tea bags. Jean bought this jelly glass at the January show from Tom Caniff, who in turn had obtained it from Shirlee Mac- Donald s collection. Colleen also shared a jelly glass: Nature s Gift From the Desert Cahill s Pure Pomegranate Jelly. The glass also had this additional wording on it: Pomegranates are often mentioned in the Bible and in Greek and Roman history. They are pictured in ancient sculpture. King Solomon praised them in song. Early Spanish colonists brought healthful pomegranates to the New World. They grow best in hot, arid climates. Pomegranates selected for their deep purple color and delicious flavor are used in making this jelly. Wow, that is a lot of wording on a little glass! Colleen purchased this jelly glass at the Jelly Jammers meeting from Pat Van Dyke. John Elwood displayed an amber HP #944 Eskay s Pat. July 11th 98 Albumenized Food (milk for infants); and an amber HP (unlisted, corktype closure) Canton Manufacturing Co. product jar. Norm Barnett said that he got a cold and did not want to share that at the meeting! Kay Rittenhouse displayed an aqua HP Trademark Lightning that she had purchased from Ron Ashby. This jar represented her first purchase of a fruit jar! Kay also showed a light SCA cigar jar: W m Tegge & Co. Dave Rittenhouse displayed a clear HG #566 The Canton Domestic Fruit Jar, which he had purchased from Tom Schumm; an aqua midget PT # Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH 58 (reversed N) (reverse of jar: circle). Joe also showed several other show purchases: a Ball blue QT #318 Ball Sure Seal; a clear bottle embossed on the front with Armstrong Mould / Winchester, Ind. / 20 TH Anniversary / , and on the reverse with Symbol of (figure of muscular arm holding up a mould) Quality and Service ; and a clear QT #2735 Sterling Mason.

Page 4 Pictures from Show and Tell Lou Ebert discusses the paper-weight collection that he brought. These items were made as whimsies by glass factory workers. A close-up of one of the paper-weights that Lou displayed. This one was given to his Grandmother, who was named Ivy. Marty Troxell brought this midget PT Mason s Patent jar (reverse: cross) in a wonderful apple or lime green color. The base of Marty s midget PT shows mould number 31. Mart Troxell also brought this QT Mason s (crosss) Patent jar in a light yellow color! The base of Marty s QT shows the mould number 459.

Page 5 Pictures from Show and Tell Dave s Mason s Patent jar with reversed N s and notice it is 58 instead of Anne Szopa purchased this wonderful Ball special run commemorative jelly glass. Apparently this celebrated the history of Dolton, IL. Colleen Dixon brought this nice Cahill jelly glass which once contained pomegranate jelly. Sue Wilson acquired this unlisted jar that has her last name on it. New Zealand is a long ways away from Indiana! Lou Ebert brought a wonderful collection of glass paperweights that were made at the turn of the century. More examples of the paper-weights from Lou s collection purchased over the course of many years.
