President s Corner Finally, the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS) / American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) Show is here. The national AFMS Show rotates between the 7 regions of the country and having it held in our neck of the woods is wonderful opportunity. I am hoping everyone will join me seeing the variety of speakers throughout the 3 days and socializing at the Cracker Barrel with club members from around the country. There are more dealers than at a regular club show. I have it on good authority that there will be unique items up for sale all 3 days at the Silent Auction. Volunteers helping at the Show will receive a free ticket. For more Show info visit: Program for the June Meeting: Join us on June 7th as Eva Gomez, Director of Annual Giving and Special Gifts from CSU Channel Islands, will be giving a very short talk about how the CSU system wide changes will impact the Lois and Bill Allmen Memorial Scholarship that we fund. We will also view an episode of Mineral Explorers visit to Spain. Not all that glitters is gold it just might be Spanish pyrite! Join Thomas as he visits never-before- seen private collections in Barcelona and Navajun. Travel back in time through stories told of a country full of explorers and visit the medieval town of Navajun. You ll be amazed by the world s most perfectly crystallized pyrite in the Navajun Mine, and get an exclusive look at the owner s favorite specimens, some of the world s very best pyrite he s held in his own private collection. Pebble Pups Program for June 2017 The Pebble Pups program will continue with birthstones this month. Target has geology t-shirts for spring and these Pebble Pups, Brynleigh and Breena Elliott, love them. They wore them to rock out for Science at the Earth Day March for Science in Los Angeles. The girls got to meet the astronomer Mike Brown from Cal Tech who "killed Pluto" and discovered the dwarf planet Eris. They loved chatting with him about meteorites. Page 3

To Our Class Instructors A huge "Thank You" to all of our class instructors for all of your hard work! Between January and May, we had 88 enrollments for our classes. As a club, I want to acknowledge we are supported financially by the classes. We appreciate all of your hard work, commitment and just plain enjoyment that each of you bring to your classes. Congratulations for a job well done! The Birthstone for June is Pearl and Moonstone Source: File:White pearl necklace.jpg - Source: File:Pierrelune.jpg - Volunteer at the CFMS/AFMS Show It takes a lot of people to put on a gem show, and even more to put on this 3-day CFMS-AFMS show. We need volunteers, beginning with setup on Wednesday and Thursday, continuing during the show itself on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and concluding with cleanup Sunday evening. Lunch will be provided for volunteers. And we give you a free pass and free parking too! For the perks, all we ask is at least 4 hours of your time (although most people will enjoy helping out so much that they pitch in for a lot more than 4 hours). If you are travelling from afar, volunteering introduces you to a lot of new friends in the gem and mineral community. There is a signup form here: Invite to the Cracker Barrel CFMS/AFMS Show Friday June 9th 7 pm to 9 pm, Ventura Fairgrounds, McBride Hall You are cordially invited to attend. City of Ventura mayor Erik Nasarenko, will cut the ribbon to welcome everyone to the CFMS-AFMS Show! It is an opportunity to meet fellow members from across the country. Wine, Snack food and other beverages served. Activites: Line Auction, Line Dancing. Page 4

DRILL PRESS VISE TIPS FROM A JEWELER S BENCH Brad Smith brad@greenheart.com A drill press vise is a versatile tool to hold a workpiece securely and in precise alignment. It reduces the of risks of working with high power motors, use of larger drill bits, and higher heat generated in the operation. The vise can be clamped to the drill press table if needed and is quite handy for use at the bench to hold things for sawing or riveting. You can find them at stores that carry machine tool supplies. My feeling is that the best ones are made from steel. In particular, I like the ones with V grooves cut into the jaw plates. That lets me hold a punch straight upright or hold a rod horizontal. To find a supplier, search on "drill press vise" at sites like micromark.com mscdirect.com/enco smallparts.com grizzly.com sears.com DENTAL GOLD You might think that a couple pieces of dental gold would be valuable, but if you only have a small amount, it can be a problem. Sending it to a refiner is expensive for small amounts of metal. I made the mistake of thinking I could melt it and roll out my own sheet. However, the trace metals that dental gold contains to make it a good material in your mouth cause it to crack if you try to forge it or roll it out as a sheet. It ruined my whole ingot. So what to do with a couple gold crowns? A reasonable alternative is to try incorporating the metal into your jewelry. If you have enough material to do a casting, that's probably the best use for dental gold. If you're not into casting, try melting it on a solder pad and while molten, divide it into small pieces with your solder pick. Then re-flow each piece to make little gold balls for use as accents on your designs. The balls can also be planished a bit to make small discs or struck with a design stamp to add texture. Page 8

Rockhound Rendezvous Fun at June s Workshop Rockhound Rendezvous & Lapidary Equipment Demonstration Saturday, June 17, 2017, 9:00 am To 2:00 pm. You are invited to join us at the VGMS facilities, at Camp Comfort, Creek Rd, Ojai, CA Don Depue will be demonstrating some of Diamond Pacific s excellent equipment. You will be able to have a hands-on examination of equipment you might be considering purchasing for yourself or your club. Bring your check book if you are considering a purchase. Following are the machines he will be demonstrating: Titan Genie Flat Laps for Titan or Genie w/polishing pads Wizard 6 Trim saw 12 Flat Lap Gryphon Band Saw Taurus 3, Ring Saw Foredom Multiplex (cabbing, trim saw, carving, flat lap) If you know of a machine that Diamond Pacific sells and you would like to see it in action, let us know and we will ask Don if it is possible to bring it along. The Rockhound Rendezvous will offer you a chance to share some of your great field trip finds and lapidary work. There will be plenty space for you to set up a table to display your wares for viewing and trading. Who knows, someone may want to buy something you display. You can sell or trade anything, it doesn t have to lapidary involved. If you have used lapidary equipment for sale, bring it. VGMS will also be having the Annual Picnic, the club supplying the main dish and drinks, members/guests bringing side dishes and desserts. Everyone welcome, just please sign up so we have a count. Go to whosbringingwhat.com/vgms< or info@vgms.org<mailto:info@vgms.org> with any questions. To find the VGMS facilities across from Camp Comfort, take the 101 freeway to highway 33 then turn right on Creek Road, continue until you see Camp Comfort on the right and the VGMS facilities on the left. Be careful with the left turn and if you get to Ojai you missed us. -- Rock 'n' Roll! Angela Brown Editor, "Rockhound Rambling" Rockhounding in the Mojave Trails National Monument Rockhounding in southern California s Mojave Trails National Monument is a way of life for 91- year-old rockhound, Bill Depue. From licking stones to hiking over geological wonders like ancient lava flows, rockhounding is an outdoor recreation opportunity that has thousands of visitors digging for treasure each year. Rockhounders are welcome to collect limited amounts of rocks, minerals and gemstones in the Monument in accordance with the BLM rock-collecting guidelines. (BLM California Facebook) Donna Page 9

Lapis Lazuli or Sodalite? Look for pyrite inclusions in lapis lazuli if you want to know whether you have sodalite, lapis or imitation lapis. - Lapis Lazuli - Look for pyrite inclusions. - Sodalite - does not have pyrite inclusions. - Imitation Lapis - inclusions are golden flakes. Lapis Lazuli is the gemstone with a rich blue color. Lazurite is the mineral name of the gem and ornamental stone Lapis Lazuli, it has a hardness of 5 to 5 ½, is a sodium aluminium silicate with some sulphur. Most of the properties of lazurite are similar to those of sodalite, but the association of pyrite with lazurite determines the identification. Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate with chlorine, it is 5 ½ to 6 in hardness and the color is usually blue but may be white, grey, yellow or red. It is associated with other feldpathoids, particularly nepheline. Lapis requires fine sanding to prevent pyrite inclusions from protruding during polishing Sodalite polishes perfectly on felt with cerium oxide, after a fine job of sanding. Hydrochloric acid is good for testing lapis-lazuli. A drop of it on the blue stone creates an odor of hydrogen sulfide. On the white areas it usually effervesces because the white is usually calcite. This test will distinguish Lapis from Sodalite. ~ From Calgary Lapidary Journal, May 2011 Via - Rollin Rock and Magic Valley Gem News; Golden Spike 5/11 Page 12
