Brian Miller -OGMS Editor Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year. As peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes, in Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Today, most of the peridot supply comes from Arizona; other sources are China, Myanmar, and Pakistan. This gemstone comes in several color variations ranging from yellowish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens. Peridot, in smaller sizes, often is used in beaded necklaces and bracelets. "August Birthstone." Jewelry Association. American Gem Society, n.d. Web. 20 July < The Rock Bag! Aug 2014 Volume 52. 5 T h e P r e z S e z... Hello OGMS, We have a lot going on this month. Its Fair Time! Many club members have featured or put in specimen s for the Ventura County Fair and I am jazzed we have so many. Come and check this great stuff out. This general meeting might be a little different. Many of us will be volunteering at the fair and attendance could be low, but don t be sad We have a very neat Educational DVD about our native people the Chumash and the Gabrielino. Its a great DVD, and you will learn maybe thing or two from this cool film. Adrian Ruiz, President 2014 Darryl Powell, Used With Permission." OGMS August 6, Program OGMS -- You have TWO CHOICES either come to the general meeting and watch a cool Educational video about the Chumash and Gabrielino, or attend the Fair. Many of the members will be volunteering at the fair so attendance might be low. So pick wisely! Dr. Christenson has devoted much of his life to replicating artifacts for many Southern California museums and giving demonstrations and lectures about the way of life, the art and artifacts, and the materials used by these tribes. This DVD will enrich you with new knowledge about the native people. Kay Hara, VP Programs Dr. Kent Christenson (805) kentchristensonlectures@gmail.com The Rock Bag! Aug 2014 Volume 52. Issue 8.! 6 2014 Galaxy of Gems Expo Exhibit Chair Report - August The Ventura County Fair has started and I hope everyone was successful in getting an exhibit (or two) in this year. I heard that case space filled up very quickly. That is wonderful news. It is great to hear and see that our hobby is still alive and going strong. I am also looking forward to seeing what everyone has offered up as a display at the Ventura Fair. Our 45 th annual Galaxy of Gems Expo is quickly approaching (Nov. 1st & 2nd) and it s time to think about what you will be exhibiting this year. Our theme will be Quartz. That means there will be many opportunities and ways to show case this beautiful mineral. Of course, there will be plenty of room to display the many other facets of our hobby. We had almost 60 exhibits last year and that is a wonderful number of cases, but I would like to get more than 75 this year. We can achieve this with your help. We, as Society members, need to spread the word and exhibit forms to other Clubs. We need to commit and sign up to display more than one case. We need to encourage our fellow Society members, especially the younger ones, to show off their beautiful collections, wonderful treasures, and amazing creations. There is an exhibitor s application on the back of the Rock Bag, there will be some available at the general meetings, or you can your information (bj9709@yahoo.com) OGMS The deadline for entry is Oct. 15th, so get that form filled out and sent in soon. Thank you for sharing your past displays and looking forward to see your future ones, Brett Allen Johnson 2014 Exhibit Chair The Rock Bag! Aug 2014 Volume 52. Issue 8.! Page 6

7 C F M S N e w s Treating Cuts at the Workshop and Field Trips By: Mark Nelson, EMT Guess what? We don t live in a bubble! The risks in the lapidary hobby are no different from those in other workplaces. In our lapidary shops we have sharp edges and tools that can slip and cut or puncture. Our shared goal is to enable all of our rockhound enthusiasts to enjoy our hobby. On field trips we slip and slide on our hands, elbows and knees. Our hands and fingers seek out rocks with sharp edges that once made cutting tools for primitive cultures. The opportunities that we enjoy as rockhounds and jewelry enthusiasts also present manageable risks such as lacerations and abrasions (cuts and scrapes) and punctures. The danger in these injuries is INFECTION. The way we treat these injuries to prevent infection can make the difference between a minor mishap and a major event. If you are reading this article you are most likely a leader, manager or supervisor of your club s activities. As managers of activities that may involve injuries such as cuts and abrasions you may be called upon to help treat an injured member. You need to know what you should and should not do for treatment. YOU SHOULD: For minor cuts, punctures and scrapes, where the bleeding is minimal, wash the wound with soap and water. Use tweezers, if necessary, to remove all particles of dirt or vegetation. Keep it clean and dry. Apply a band aid to an open cut to keep the edges of the wound closed. This is all that is required to care for most wounds. As a manager representing a lapidary club you should not apply any liquids or ointments to the wound. For more serious wounds the first step is to stop the bleeding. Most wounds respond to direct pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. Hold the pressure continuously for approximately 10 to 20 minutes (the affected person can help). If the bandage gets saturated with blood, put an additional bandage on top of the first. Do not remove the initial bandage. If this fails to stop the bleeding seek medical assistance. After about two hours, soak the bandage in clean water and gently remove it. Clean the wound gently with soap and water and apply a bandaid or bandage to close the wound and to keep it clean. DO NOT: Clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide and iodine. While this is acceptable initially it can delay healing and should be avoided long-term. Apply antibiotic ointment or any other topical treatment. This can be of help, but use it only if the affected person provides it to you or permits its use. It is best not to introduce any medication to a wound not prescribed by a doctor or medical expert. Attempt to apply any stitches or sutures unless you are a medical professional so trained. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: For stitches and wide-area abrasions where the skin is badly torn, help the affected person to receive medical care within 6 hours. A delay can increase the rate of wound infection. Any puncture wound through tennis shoes or sneakers has a high risk of infection due to the injection of shoe material into the wound. Clean with soap and water and advise the affected person to be seen by a doctor if there are any indications of infection. Any redness, swelling, increased pain, fever, red streaking, or pus draining from the wound may indicate an infection that requires professional medical care. The Rock Bag! Aug 2014 Volume 52. 8 Safety Matters By: Ellery Borow, Safety Chair A F M S N e w s The Eyes Have It. They do! The eyes have it all! They give us depth perception, amazing colors, pattern perception in that pretty jasper slab -- our eyes draw back the curtain on our window to the world. Judging by experiences with all manner of rock and mineral collecting, it appears that the vast majority of our field identification of minerals and rocks is performed by visual means alone. Indeed, we use our eyes to judge the mating of facets on that stone we are cutting, to lay out the cabochon template on that pretty slab of jasper, to follow the visual clues of the trail as we hike to that long lost rock quarry. There is an endless variety of how we use our eyes in our hobby. Our eyes allow us to enjoy many areas of our rock, mineral, fossil hobby that we might otherwise be unable to pursue. So, why do I see so many folks pursuing the hobby without protection for the valuable resource that is their vision? I see folks hammering rock, grinding stones, working in dusty environments, spending hours in the blindingly bright sunlight -- all without benefit of suitable eye protection. It seems strange that folks would so risk the precious gift of sight. I have heard numerous reasonable-sounding arguments as to why protection was not being used during vision-risking tasks. Excuses such as "my goggles were accidentally left home", "the goggles' elastic straps are worn our and no longer hold them in place". "the goggles are too scratched or hazy to see through", "the goggles were run over by a truck", "the lenses keep falling out", "they are uncomfortable to wear", and other excuses too numerous to list. Well, trust me on this one, there are numerous solutions to these problems. Goggles are cheap (relative to the cost of eye surgery or vision loss). Many places sell goggles. Most hardware, grocery, department stores sell them. One does not need to visit a rock shop to find goggles. Please consider keeping an extra pair or two on hand. There are replacement lenses available for many styles of goggles. New and replacement goggle straps can be made from elastics found in sewing, fabric and yard goods stores. Store goggles in a protective box or case and keep them in the collecting bag so they are not inadvertently, left home. Goggles are ill fitting? There are numerous goggle styles. Visit a store and try on various kinds to locate ones you find comfortable. Can't find well fitting goggles? There are other ways to protect ones eyes such as face shields, prescription safety glasses, safety glasses that fit over ones own regular prescription glasses, and aviator style goggles -- among others. Please consider protecting your precious gift of sight. We also hope you use that precious gift to keep reading these safety matters columns. Your safety matters. The Rock Bag! Aug 2014 Volume 52.
