4 PRESENTER DESCRIPTIONS CONT D. ROBIN HOPPER And Now for Something Completely Different! Porcelain Canvas! This presentation explores a totally new direction in the making of tile as fine art, utilizing an amazing, newly available, revolutionary product from the world of high-tech electronics. Porcelain Canvas is a fine, white, translucent sheet material that comes in a number of different sizes and thicknesses. It is pre-fired to above cone 10, has a beautiful smooth surface, has no shrinkage, is non-absorbent and may be used as a surface for painting and drawing on with an unlimited range of mark-making. It may be fired in may ways at a wide range of temperature, in oxidation or reduction. The presentation will be a combination of video, practical demonstration, discussion and short slide show on finished results plus glaze and color development. The demonstration will include various ways that the tile may be used from cold surface drawing to warm surface glaze painting. Its potential is only limited by the skills and vision of the artist using it. Robin feels that the arrival of Porcelain Canvas for the graphically skilled ceramic artist is likely the most important new direction in an age-old medium. After a brief intro to the conference program, Robin will show part of a brand new DVD that covers some of the uses and processes used in both drawing and painting on this product. Demonstration of materials for cold surface drawing and warm surface glaze painting, and multiple layering processes with these ceramic sheet surfaces. Robin will sharing differing approaches to its use at a variety of temperatures and in different firing condtions. A short digital slide presentation will show a range of work by Robin and other artists who have recently taken to working with Porcelain Canvas(TM) with results showing electric fired, gas fired, wood-fired and raku fired works. Although questions may be fielded throughout the demonstration, Robin prefers to have minutes Question and Answer period at the end of each session to clarifyany related issues. Robin s credo has always been to try it and see. This presentation looks at his research and development with this new material over the last two years, and the realization that there is almost nothing that can t be done with this amazing new product. It can be fired at any temperature up to cone 10, in any type of kiln, offering entirely new possibilities for the graphically capable artist or artist looking for new directions in an age-old medium. For more information about Robin, visit: Celebrating Ten Years
