7 Growing Role of Coal in ASEAN: ASEAN Coal Production Indonesia produces nearly 90% of ASEAN s coal while Vietnam produces only 7%. ASEAN will see a slight increase of coal production in due to Indonesia s plan to cap its coal production at 400 million tonnes per year, starting in 2019, according to Indonesia s new Plan (RUEN).

9 CCT APAEC Establishment The CCT programme was established to recognise coal s role as a major fuel source for power generation in the ASEAN region. 1 st - Development The programme commenced during the first development process of APAEC in Objectives To address the environmental issues raised from coal production and utilisation, specifically to enhance the image of coal through the promotion of clean coal technologies (CCT).

Increase the level of awareness of the public on the benefits of coal use. 3. Promote intra-asean coal trade and increase investment in CCT. 4. Conduct policy research to enhance coal development and use, and build capacity. 5. Establish a fully functional ASEAN Coal Database and Information System (ACDIS). a. ASEAN Coal Awards b. Capacity Building Workshops on CCT. c. Feasibility study on CCT and disseminate results. a. Event to enhance coal s image in the light of global environmental concerns. b. Specifically on coal upgrading technologies on low rank coal. Capacity building (Intensify institutional and human capacity building in the ASEAN coal sector) Capacity building in 2017: Indonesia, ACE and GCCSI organised CCS workshop to enhance public awareness in emission reduction by CCS utilisation. Yearly submission of ASEAN Coal Database and Information System (ACDIS) information and statistics Established Focal Points system Need strong support from AFOC Members to submit coal data

14 Conclusions Still there are significant barriers for the region to implement CCT. Even though many advanced technologies for environmentally friendly coal utilisation have been developed, it has not been properly implemented due to financing limitations. The next regional step for CCT to move to a demonstration scale. Without the experience, CCT will not become a commercially feasible due to unresolved technical and cost estimates challenges. Once CCT are validated and their associated costs are proven through the operation of large-scale demonstration plants, only then it will become costcompetitive compared to other low-carbon technologies.
