Overview Land lock country, AMS -1997, WTO -2012, AEC GDP: Average 7 % growth The main economic sectors: - Electricity: potential for hydroelectric power generation estimated above MW. - Mineral : One of the most resource rich countries in Asia with more than 570 mineral deposits - Agriculture: 80% of population is farming, agriculture products the principle export are coffee, corn, paddy rice - Processing Industry

4 Economy driven by Natural Resources - More than half of GDP that value added from agriculture and other from industry and services. STI Driven force for the socio-economic development: - 1% of total investment of the government for Science Research and Development, Transfer Technology, Invention and Innovation, Promotion and application technology in production.

STI Policies and Strategies and Vision up to 2030 The role of STI has been emphasized as a driving force for socio economic development To support the production, productivity and quality To promote new innovative products and service To develop entire system of STI basically from status of least developed To establish the NIS

10 Apply STI into incentive development of the country. The strategy consist of 6 action plans: - Dissemination and Awareness on STI - Improvement of the organization, systematization of management mechanism - HRD - Apply R&D in priority area and sectors - Provide STI services for society and people in remote areas and cooperation with international

11 III. Issue and problems Issues: Innovation management are lack of experiences and skill. Application technology for commercialization Networking or linkage among R&D institutes, Universities and private sectors. R &D s infrastructure still weak Limitation of funds to support, Disseminate the knowledge experiences and best practice is limited.

12 Challenges: To harmonize with regional and international especially ASEAN Economic Community and in the global market with the high competition on trade and economic Lao PDR has to use those opportunity to adopt technology transfer and exchanging advantage and modern STI but there are some challenges as: - Absence of specific regulation - competent Human resources and research capacity - Research capacity and technological innovative performance.

13 Small economic in the region, Over 90% of enterprises in Lao is MSMEs and SMEs category Import technologies, more than half enterprises used old technology in production process. Small number introduced new products on the market products outputs of the enterprise sold on domestic market, not competitiveness in the global market

Country Development Direction The Socio-Economic sustainable development that aims at balance development with 3 pillars: economic, Social and Environmental Development; Poverty reduction; Sustainable Development Goal (+1 Goal ) Lifting of least developing country and Industrialization and Modernization.

15 Point of view for the ASEAN Open Innovation and entrepreneurship Platform Potential and Development challenges Faced by enterprises or communities: Potential: - Building networking enterprises, cute down challenges face of enterprises. - Strengthening the capacities and infrastructure of STI development - Enhance the mechanisms between public and private partnership.

16 - Market opportunity for local enterprises challenges face: - Limitation of integration knowledge of local enterprises - High competitiveness - Accession to information and source fund - Marketing and Business knowledge is still weak - Starting with family business (family factory ) - Knowledge skill of staff
