9 MARKET ENVIRONMENT /// THE TREND TOWARDS ARCHIVING IS DRIVING OUR BUSINESs /// ADDITIONAL ARCHIVING REQUIREMENTS In the future we expect further sustainable and healthy growth for the business unit at BDT. The reason: according to digitization of society and economy it seems like data increases without any limits. According to market-researcher IDC the data volume is doubling every two years. This means a 44-times increase in active data by 2020 compared to today. Sooner or later the majority of this data has to be stored and archived. In the future the industry will still rely on the proven storage medium tape and our mature and continuously developed tape libraries. The advantages of tape technology speak for themselves! A further driver of our tape business is the trend towards cloud computing. More and more companies are using computer and storage services out of the cloud. Low operating costs, investment security and low administration efforts are speaking for this technology. But finally the cloud is only a collection of hard- and software in computer centers that cannot exist without the reliable, favorable and robust media tape! The more the cloud is increasing, the larger is the need for automated tape solutions of BDT. How important reliable tape storage is was demonstrated recently by the breakdown of the Google cloud service in Lost user data could be restored thanks to tape storage. There is no other medium that guarantees such a long durability of stored data as modern tapes, namely 30 years! This long time frame is indispensable for many applications. Worldwide legal obligations require companies and organizations to provide data for a long term. German companies for example have to keep digital accounting data for at least ten years. Banks and insurances are obligated to store certain data for 15 to 30 years and pharmaceutical companies in the US even have to store their data up to 100 years. This can be handled effectively only with tape technology. A further aspect of the cloud: Even when cloud computing is much more favorable for companies at first sight, data that are no longer required in daily business affect the storage costs as well. This means that companies currently still have to archive their data locally in their own IT or computer centers. For reasons of costs and efficiency tape is used here as well. Despite apparently more modern solutions such as hard disks, flash drives or SSDs (Solid State Disks) tape still has a brilliant future. This is recognizable as nearly all well-known manufacturers of IT equipment such as our customer HP are planning new products around tape for the next several years (product roadmap). The advantages of tape are not only the lowest costs but also the durability of stored data, easy handling, mechanical reliability, insensitivity towards outside influences such as temperatures or dust, as well as high future security thanks to continuous further developments. This is the reason why not only data capacity of tape is increasing constantly but also the accessibility to tape is getting easier thanks to developments such as LTFS and therefore tape gets more and more similar to mass storage media such as hard disk. BDT will still be in the middle of the booming tape market thanks to its expertise, comprehensive development know-how and manufacturing expertise around tape technology and automated tape loaders.
