2 About the Conference The inaugural Aerospace Structural Impact Dynamics International Conference is being held to provide a forum for researchers, regulatory agencies and industry professionals to present and discuss the latest aerospace crashworthiness regulations, techniques, technologies and research. 3 Conference Committee Gerardo Olivares, Ph.D. CONFERENCE CHAIR Director / Sr. Research Scientist, Crash Dynamics & Computational Mechanics Laboratories Dr. Gerardo Olivares has seventeen years of experience in computational and experimental crashworthiness. Dr. Olivares joined the in His primary areas of research are computational and experimental aerospace crashworthiness. Since 2005 he has collaborated with the Federal Aviation Administration and industry to develop methodologies to conduct certification by analysis of aircraft interiors and to evaluate the crashworthiness behavior of composite and metallic structures. Willem Doeland, Ph.D. Structures Expert, Certifi cation Directorate European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Dr. Willem Doeland has more than 20 years of experience in the field of aircraft certification, and has also participated in various rulemaking and research activities. His responsibilities cover many certification subjects, including crashworthiness, ditching and bird impact. Alastair Johnson, Ph.D. Composites Consultant DLR Institute of Structures and Design Dr Alastair Johnson is a consultant in design analysis of composite materials and structures. Previously he worked for the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Structures and Design, Stuttgart where he was involved in national and European research projects in damage and failure modelling of aircraft structures under crash and impact loads. Prior to that he was head of the composites testing and design group at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK. He is Associate Editor of the journal Applied Composite Materials and a member of the FAA CMH-17 Crashworthiness Working Group. Alan Melling, BSc Hons Mech Eng Designated Certifi cation Specialist (DCS) Crashworthiness Airbus Operations Limited Mr Alan Melling has 15 years experience in aircraft structures certification, primarily Landing Gear Structures and overall aircraft crashworthiness. Alan was appointed as Crashworthiness DCS for Airbus Single Aisle aircraft in 2001, subsequently assuming responsibility for other Airbus products and being involved in many certifications. His role is to liaise with all relevant specialists to ensure that compliance is achieved with the applicable airworthiness requirements. He is the direct interface between Airbus and the certificating Airworthiness Authorities, presenting to them on all crashworthiness aspects. Alan has a further 6 years experience in Fatigue & Fracture Mechanics of aerospace structures (including composite materials). Joseph Pellettiere, Ph.D Chief Scientifi c and Technical Advisor, Crash Dynamics Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Dr. Joseph Pellettiere provides the link between researchers, policy makers, and certification engineers in the areas of crash survivability and occupant protection. Before joining the FAA he was the Technical Advisor for the Biomechanics branch at the Air Force Research Laboratory. His areas of expertise include occupant protection, computational biomechanics and vehicle safety. J. Michael Pereira, Ph.D. Technical Lead, Ballistic Impact Facility NASA Glenn Research Center Dr. Michael Pereira has more than 20 years of experience working in the field of Structural Mechanics and Dynamics, and conducts research in the areas of high-rate loading of structures and materials. He has published more than 80 technical articles, including 20 articles in refereed journals. He has received several distinguished honors, including the NASA Medal for Exceptional Service, the NASA Space Flight Awareness Honoree Award and a Commendation from the Department of the Army. Mostafa Rassaian, Ph.D., PE Technical Fellow, Computational Structural Mechanics, Impact Dynamics, Structures Technology Boeing Research & Technology Dr. Mostafa Rassaian leads diverse simulation solutions in the areas of bird strike, hostile environment modeling (live-fire), impact dynamics, and crashworthiness using nonlinear explicit finite element methods. He holds fourteen U.S. patents, with five more pending. Mostafa is currently responsible for simulating dynamic events for large-scale structures certification by analysis. His technical leadership has been instrumental in developing the FAA-approved certification plan for the Boeing composite 787 airplane that relies heavily on dynamic analysis in lieu of full-scale testing. He continues to be a strong advocate for large component certification by analysis and virtual testing, simulation & certification by analysis. Rodney Thomson, Ph.D. Program Manager, Design and Analysis Advanced Composite Structures Australia Pty Ltd Dr Rodney Thomson has over 18 years of research and development experience in the design and analysis of composite structures for aerospace, maritime, automotive and oil & gas applications. In that time, he led and managed research and commercial projects in low and high energy impact, helicopter crashworthiness testing and simulation, bird-strike simulation, optimisation algorithms for composites, low-cost composites for automotive applications and improved computational methods for predicting failure of composite structures.
