1 In preparation for the ASQ CQE Exam: The Hartford Section (103) of the American Society For Quality announces the Spring 2017 CERTIFIED QUALITY ENGINEER (CQE) REFRESHER PROGRAM

2 What is the CQE program all about? A comprehensive training program that develops the skill set of a quality or manufacturing professional in the following body of knowledge: Management and Leadership in Quality Engineering Quality Systems Development, Implementation, and Verification Planning, Controlling, and Assuring Product and Process Quality Reliability and Risk Management Problem Solving and Quality Improvement Quantitative Methods (Sampling, Probability modeling, SPC, Design of Experiments, Statistical Decision Making, etc.) American Society for Quality (ASQ) administers the national exam on (see page 1) Candidates must register with the American Society for Quality by (see page 1). 6 Biography Peter E. Teti (Pete) SQA Discipline Chief Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies Corporation Work (860) ; Pete Teti is in his 32 nd year at United Technologies Corporation, recently rejoining Pratt and Whitney as Supplier Quality Discipline Chief. He recently spent 2.5 years at Pratt & Whitney as a Quality Fellow in the core quality group where he was responsible for aiding in the implementation of the UTC Production Part Approval Process, developing quality skills and proficiencies, and providing overall quality expertise across the entire PW supply chain. Prior to Pratt Pete worked at Hamilton Sundstrand for over 26 years leading the development of quality systems, statistical process control implementation, and Supplier Quality & Development. As a Technical Fellow for Quality Engineering, Pete was instrumental in the development and implementation of several critical UTC quality processes such as Quality Clinic Systems, Process Certification, Supplier Gold, PPAP, and Manufacturing Process Review assessments. Pete was named a Technical Fellow for HS in 2006 and at Pratt & Whitney in He holds ASQ certifications as a Quality Engineer, Quality Auditor and Quality Manager and has been a member of ASQ since He is a Senior Member od ASQ and is immediate past Chairman of the Dorian Shainin Medal Award for ASQ national. He has taught numerous course for UTC over the years and is the lead instructor for the Certified Quality Engineer Refresher program for the Hartford, CT Chapter 103. Pete also achieved blackbelt certification from Launsby Consulting in Design for Six Sigma and is an Adjunct Professor at Central Connecticut State University and the National Graduate School teaching courses in Six Sigma and Relentless Root Cause Analysis. Pete has a bachelor s degree in Industrial Engineering/Operations Research from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a Masters in Operations Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Outside of work, Pete enjoys coaching basketball and gardening. Pete, his wife Jennifer, and their 4 children, reside in Torrington, CT.

7 Biography Stephen Luko (Steve) Statistician, Engineering Fellow: Statistics, Reliability, Risk UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS), United Technologies Corporation Work (860) ; FAX (860) ; Steve is a certified Quality and Reliability Engineer through ASQ and a Fellow of ASQ. He has over 37 years of industrial experience working for three fortune 500 companies supporting a variety of disciplines. Over the years he has given numerous industrial short courses on topics in statistics and Quality and has taught Mathematics and Statistics courses at the college level for 30 years. He has published numerous papers and articles in the technical literature of Statistics and Quality and is a member of ASQ TC69 sub-committee 6 concerning sampling. Steve is also active on ASTM committee E11 on Quality and Statistics, is past national chair of E11 and is a Fellow of ASTM international. He has received several awards for developing and writing standards on topics in statistics including the Harold F. Dodge award from ASTM International in In 2009 Steve was honored to receive the Dorian Shainin ASQ medal for work he completed on the solution to a sampling problem that subsequently helped several companies. Steve currently works as a statistician in UTAS s Central Engineering Group in Windsor Locks CT where he is an engineering Fellow. He formerly worked as a statistician for Pratt & Whitney (9 years) and for the Torrington Company (12 years). He has also worked for The Johnson and Johnson Company in line manufacturing engineering, product test and Quality engineering (9 years). Steve holds the Masters and Bachelors degrees in Mathematics/Statistics from Central CT State University and an AS in Chemical Technology from Hartford State Technical College.

8 Biography Mark Phalin Quality and Business Process Excellence Manager, Military Programs - Customer Service UTC AEROSPACE SYSTEMS Tel: ; Mark.phalin@utas.utc.com Mark Phalin is in his 31 st year at United Technologies Corporation UTC, recently joining the Quality & Standards Laboratory group at Pratt & Whitney as a Supplier Quality Manager. Mark is responsible for West Coast and Mid-West chemical and metallurgical processes with some responsibilities in the South, and New England suppliers. Prior to moving to Pratt, Mark held a variety of quality positions over a 7 year period at Kaman Aerospace, and for the past 24 years at Hamilton Sundstrand leading the NDT Engineering group, and spent time in both Operations and Supplier Quality, before moving on to lead quality for the Hamilton Sundstrand Air Management Systems business unit. Mark is published through the Airline Transportation Association and FAA for a Eddy Current NDT process he develop, and holds a patent for an ultrasonic device developed for propeller blade inspection. He has also held the position as Aerospace Industries Association AIA-NDT sub-committee representative for UTC transitioning Mil Specs to AS specs, and was the ultrasonic chair person for the NADCAP NDT committee. Mark has an associates degree in engineering (mechanical design) from Springfield Technical Community College, a bachelor s degree in operations management from Lesley University, and a masters in business administration with a additional concentration in lean methodologies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford.
