2 MODERN MANUFACTURING - LIVING THE LEAN CULTURE Manufacturers Workshop & Tour ABOUT THE PROGRAM The 2016 VMA Manufacturers Workshop Modern Manufacturing - Living the Lean Culture is designed to assist managers, supervisors, and team members with a functional understanding of the key leadership skills needed to facilitate and sustain a lean culture in their company. This year s workshop will be led by Dr. Dan L. Shunk. Dr. Shunk is a professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at Arizona State University and has been recognized in the semiconductor, electronics, aerospace and automotive communities for his innovative approaches to product development and productivity improvements. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Mid-to Senior-level management, engineering and manufacturing personnel from VMA and VRC member companies. This workshop is a VMA/VRC member s only event. If you are not sure your company is a member, please call , ext REGISTRATION INFORMATION Attendee registration is open to VMA and VRC members only. Registration fee is $590 for the first registrant from a dues-paying member company and $540 for subsequent registrants. There is no limit to the number of subsequent registrants. Your registration includes continental breakfasts, lunch, breaks and Welcome Reception as well as a copy of all speaker presentations and handouts included in the Manufacturers Workshop. QUESTIONS? The VMA Manufacturers Committee is coordinating an informal Meet and Greet at the ZuZu Café located in the Hotel Valley Ho. Come meet up with old friends and make new ones, stay and have dinner or have a drink and decide where to spend the evening. Either way, it s a good way to start! This Meet and Greet is a not a formal VMA activity and is Dutch Treat for attendees. Please indicate you interest in attending when you register for the workshop so an accurate head count can be obtained. Wednesday, October 5 WORKSHOP TOURS - Additional Tour Fee of $70 Applies This year, VMA is excited to offer attendees of the 2016 Manufacturers Workshop two half-day tours to compliment the Modern Manufacturing - Living the Lean Culture theme of the workshop. Our keynote speaker Dr. Dan Shunk, has teamed up with his colleagues at Arizona State University to organize a tour of two engineering buildings in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. After lunch, attendees will be transported to Honeywell Aerospace. Honeywell is the largest manufacturer of aircraft engines and aviation products in the world. Arizona State University - Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering The Arizona State University Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering tour is designed to showcase the areas of fluid flow, fluid dynamics, modern materials and mechanical product design. Attendees will tour the following: Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building - the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building II is a high-bay facility supporting research in advanced materials, transportation planning geotechnical engineering, fluid dynamics and sustainable materials. Within the ISTB2 building is the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environments Structures Laboratory. All of the testing systems utilize digital servo control to perform a wide range of static and dynamics tests. The laboratory features a strong floor, 2-ton overhead crane and a 10 x 10 access door for maneuvering large test structures into the laboratory. The laboratory was featured on the History Channel s Modern Marvels television episode titled Breaking Point Bioengineering Medical Device Design and Innovation Global Health Technology Center - the Bioengineering Medical Device Design and Innovation Global Health Technology Center is a state-of-the-art health care technology innovation facility with over 10,000 sq. feet of space for development and product design. The Bioengineering design center provides a unique environment for bioengineers to experience the full spectra of real world medical device product design and development activities. 3

Headquartered in Phoenix, it is a division of the Honeywell International conglomerate. It generates approximately $10 billion in annual revenue from a 50/50 mix of commercial and defense contracts. On October 6, Blake Headey, Lean Master and Honeywell Operating System Process Leader will open our workshop allowing attendees to extend the conversations around the tour and provide an opportunity for more in-depth question and answer. If you wish to attend the tour, you must register by September 2, Your tour fee of $70 includes both tours, transportation and boxed lunch. 5 6-7 WORKSHOP PROGRAM Presented by Dr. Dan Shunk, Professor, Arizona State University This year s 2016 VMA Manufacturers Workshop will help attendees understand their corporate operating system and help them to identify and streamline their strategic core processes. Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the five principles of lean, the modern tools of lean and the intellectual inconsistencies of lean allowing them to make change happen by asking the question in a way that it is viewed as a goal, and not as a challenge. october This workshop will be delivered in five modules each two hours in length. Using an active learning methodology so that all attendees are engaged, each module will also contain exercises for all participants to practice what has been discussed. Getting the entire workforce to start thinking strategically and start thinking customer-centric thoughts is very difficult. This session will begin by setting some tough, strategic metrics: 50% time reduction for a strategic process, 20% cost reduction for a strategic process, 20% quality improvement for a strategic process. Is this hard YES! Is this doable YES! But it needs to be win-win-win meaning Business Success, Customer Success and Employee Success. In this first module Dr. Shunk will set the stage for how to make this happen and how to develop a Living Lean Culture. 5

The only way to achieve this is by addressing Operational Excellence. In this module attendees will formally develop a rigorous yet very understandable problem solving approach to attack waste and variability. A lean culture requires an egoless approach. Discussions will center on powerful techniques to allow attendees to see for themselves where the waste exists. All of these discussion topics will be reinforced with real case studies and exercises. 3:00-3:15 pm Coffee Break 3:15-5:00 pm Module 3 - Establishing a Competitive Advantage Value Manufacturers are in the middle of a complex supply chain. Your labor costs may be higher than many other suppliers. However, findings are that it is not the unit price but it is the total landed price of your products on the customer s docks that ultimately wins the game. Attendees will participate in an interactive exercise called the Executive Beer Game This game is a three-tiered supply chain exercise with the valve manufacturer right in the middle. Now that attendees know WHAT needs to be accomplished in establishing a Living Lean Culture In this next module, attendees will learn to transition from the WHAT to the HOW. This model will begin reflecting on the six things your employees want to know to embrace change by addressing how to lead this culture rather than how to manage it. 10:00-10:15 am Coffee Break 6

But this requires an innovation environment as a subset of your Living Lean Culture. For example, if companies want to be innovative, then sometimes ideas must FAIL. How in the world can we afford to fail? Have you ever offered an innovative idea, just to be told that won t work Embracing innovation is also embracing the idea that there is no guarantee that an idea will be successful and without new ideas, the status quo continues. Here attendees will dig into the innovation environment at Samsung, one of the most innovative companies in the world. Attendees will follow their lead and end this module by actually conducting a creativity event and creating a new product. 12:15 pm workshop CONCLUDES Speaker Information Dr. Dan Shunk Avnet Professor, Arizona State University Dr. Dan L. Shunk is the Avnet Professor of Supply Network Integration in Industrial Engineering at Arizona State University. He is currently pursuing research into collaborative commerce, global new product development, modelbased enterprises and global supply network integration. He won a Fulbright Award in , the 1996 SME International Award for Education, the 1991 and 1999 I&MSE Faculty of the Year award, the 1989 SME Region VII Educator of the Year award, chaired AutoFact in 1985, and won the 1982 SME Outstanding Young Engineer award. Dr. Shunk studied at Purdue where he received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in Blake Headey Lean Master and Honeywell Operating System Process Leader Honeywell Aerospace Blake Headey, is responsible for embedding and maturing the Honeywell Operating System across multiple Aerospace sites. With over 25 years of Operations experience across a variety of industries from High volume Commercial Automation and Controls to lower volume Aerospace products. Blake has held positions ranging from Operations Management to individual contributor type roles, primarily focusing on application of Lean principles to eliminate waste. Blake received his degree in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 7
