1 Second Announcement and Call for Papers 2001 Workshop On Non-Neutral Plasmas July 30-August 2, 2001 University of California, San Diego NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE - Sun God, 1983 Stuart Collection, UCSD The 2001 Workshop on Non-Neutral Plasmas will be held on the University of California at San Diego campus from Monday July 30 to Thursday August 2, The workshop will be sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Administrative support and financial management will be provided by the Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences at UCSD. The workshop will follow the format of the previous workshops held in Princeton, NJ (1999), Boulder, CO (1997), Berkeley, CA (1994), Irvine, CA (1992), and Washington, D.C. (1988). The purpose of the workshop is to provide a stimulating forum for exchange of current scientific information among the diverse areas of plasma physics, beam physics, and atomic physics concerned with the fundamental properties and applications of non-neutral plasmas. Topics covered by the workshop will include: Collisional transport Fluid vortex and turbulence studies Nonlinear dynamics Single- and multi-species plasma traps Collective modes Highly correlated plasmas Antimatter plasmas Storage rings High-intensity beams Ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy Dusty plasmas Applications and instrumentation The Workshop will consist of plenary talks Monday-Thursday mornings, followed by poster sessions Monday-Wednesday afternoons; the presentations will end Thursday at 1 pm. The plenary talks will be selected from the submitted abstracts on the basis of general interest and scientific importance. To facilitate informal discussions outside the talks and posters, economical Gordon conference style housing and dining has been arranged on campus, with shared 2-bedroom apartments and buffet meals in a dining commons. Also, a pre-conference reception will be held Sunday evening. The conference banquet

2 will be at the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum on Tuesday evening. A tour of the General Atomics DIII-D tokamak is planned for Thursday afternoon. Participants residing off-campus are encouraged to join in the meals and events. A workshop proceedings will be published in the American Institute of Physics Conference Proceedings series. Authors will be asked to provide a camera-ready manuscript in September Details regarding the manuscript format and length restrictions will be provided in the next mailing. ABSTRACTS: Abstracts are to be on one (8 1/2 x 11") page with adequate margins (1 inch on all sides is suggested). A booklet of abstracts will be distributed at the meeting. Oral talks will be selected by the Organizing Committee based on general interest and scientific importance. Other contributed papers will be presented in poster format; the poster boards will be 4 ft x 8 ft. REGISTRATION: Please register using the enclosed form, or a facsimile available at The registration fees before April 15, 2001 are $250 for regular attendees, and $150 for students. The rates for late registration are $300 and $175 respectively. Fees include participation in all sessions and a printed volume of the AIP Conference Proceedings. The NSF has provided some funds to help defray attendance costs for students. Students wishing to request financial assistance should include a letter to the Conference Secretary to this effect with the submission of their abstract. The conference banquet will be held on Tuesday evening, July 31. Banquet tickets ($40 each) should be purchased in advance, preferably at the same time you register for the workshop. Overseas attendees unable to pay by credit card or by check in U.S. dollars should indicate banquet attendence on the Conference Registration Form, but may pay in cash at the start of the Workshop. Updated banquet and reception activities will be announced in a future mailing. Tour of General Atomics Facility: The Doe has provided some funds to encourage scientific connections between this workshop and the fusion community. As part of this, a tour of the local General Atomics DIII-D tokamak is planned for Thursday afternoon, Aug. 2. A shuttle bus will provide transportation from the campus to GA. If you wish to attend, please indicate this on your Conference Registration Form. HOUSING: To facilitate informal discussions outside the talks and posters, Gordon conference style housing and dining has been arranged on campus, with shared 2-bedroom apartments and buffet meals in a dining commons. A single room reservation in these apartments (meals included) is $272 for the four-night conference stay, Sunday-Wednesday. The package plan includes four breakfasts, three lunches, and three dinners. Additional nights, for early arrival or later departure, may be purchased for $47/night (meals NOT included). For those who prefer not to share an apartment, a limited number of private apartments are available. Apartments do not have telephones or TV. Towels are changed daily, linen weekly. On-campus

NOTE: The UCSD campus is a no-smoking facility: Smoking is not permitted in any campus building or apartment.
