Defence and security engineering Cranfield s defence and security engineering capability comprises world leading educational opportunities including short courses and Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Master s qualifications and cuttingedge research with access to specialist facilities and equipment. Symposia provide a forum to engage with government agencies, industry and research establishments, and consultancy services give access to the latest thinking and knowledge in defence and security. Our educational programmes qualify our graduates as international-standard scientists and engineers who understand the design, development and acquisition of technologies. The Centre for Defence Engineering has capabilities in aeromechanical systems, dynamic response processes, impact and armour and vehicle systems. It creates and shares world leading academic knowledge with partners in the UK s Ministry of Defence, wider government and industry through publications, teaching, collaboration and entrepreneurship. The Centre for Systems Engineering is one of Europe s leading providers of systems engineering expertise and capabilities, integrating industrial, operational and technological experience across education, research and consultancy activities. It also offers the UK s first defence- and security-related master s apprenticeship in systems engineering (SEMAP). We work with organisations such as: 3
Study at Cranfield Our full-time graduate programmes in defence and security offer the highest standards of education and address the changing needs of an evolving sector. The modular structure of many of our courses offers students the flexibility to study at their own pace and exit with a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Master s (PgCert, PgDip, MSc) qualification, or simply to study an individual module. Military Aerospace and Airworthiness MSc, PgDip, PgCert (Part-time only) Today s military aviation platforms are complex systems and it is essential, therefore, that they are deployed and maintained in such a way as to ensure their continued airworthiness and the safety of the crew operating them. To achieve this requires engineers to be cognisant of a broad range of aerospace engineering, airworthiness and safety disciplines. The MSc in Military Aerospace and Airworthiness has been designed to address these needs by providing a course aimed specifically at employees in the MOD, Armed Forces and the defence industry. It provides practicing engineers with the knowledge and skills to enable them to work more effectively in aerospace engineering, airworthiness, and safety. The course structure allows students to continue in full-time employment while they are studying. Military Vehicle Technology MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course is for military officers, defence industry staff and government staff in particular as a preparation for senior posts in project management teams concerned with the design, development, procurement and operation of military vehicles. It covers the principles of military vehicle technology, in particular advances in vehicle technology, analysis of the performance of the vehicle system, and the development of skills to analyse and evaluate new concepts against changes in the requirements of the users. The course covers all aspects of technology of military fighting and logistics vehicles, with opportunities for choice and specialisation. Systems Engineering for Defence Capability MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course equips students to understand and deal with the complex challenges in today s rapidlychanging world. It provides comprehensive coverage of modern Systems Engineering principles, practices, methods and tools, placing great emphasis on their practical application. Systems Engineering covers a broad spectrum of activities ranging from detailed design to integration and management of complex systems. The course provides an opportunity to tailor the learning pathway according to need, achieved with a combination of core and elective modules. 4
Accreditation The MSc awards of selected courses have, or may be in the process of obtaining, accreditation by the following professional institutions. To find out if a specific course holds accreditations, please visit the course page on our website. My postgraduate study with Cranfield has led to greater employability by improving the weaker areas of my skills and knowledge; in particular I now have a deeper understanding of practical project management. The most enjoyable aspect of my course is the freedom to explore and research, formulating new ideas and concepts from what I ve found. Edward Oates, current student Defence and Security PhD 5
Short courses Cranfield has a diverse suite of defence and security short courses that meet the challenges and requirements of a changing and complex sector. Our portfolio offers the maximum scope for personal development and, at the same time, balances your time and resource pressures. Aeronautical Engineering - Fundamentals Designed as a top-up for engineering graduates with limited previous knowledge of aeronautical engineering, having a strong emphasis on helicopter engineering principles. Airworthiness of Military Aircraft Examines the legal basis that underpins airworthiness regulation in aircraft design, production, operation and maintenance of military aircraft. Failure of Structural Materials Examines how stresses and strains develop in engineering components. Fighting Vehicle Design Enabling attendees to better understand the technologies used in the design and development of fighting vehicles. Finite Element Methods in Engineering Introduces the skills required to perform a computational heat transfer, structural or impact analysis using an industry standard finite element or hydrocode package. 6
Fixed-wing Aeromechanics Provides an understanding of the principles, concepts and analysis techniques of fixed-wing aerodynamics and flight mechanics. Intelligent Systems Explores the basis of intelligent systems including an awareness of the nature of problems in which such systems can be exploited. Military Aircraft Systems Offers working knowledge of military airframe systems, focusing upon their roles, technology and integration with modern military aircraft platforms. Military Avionics Examines military sensor, communication and navigation avionic systems, the electronic threat to such systems and how they may be protected.
