Desk Organizer Project PROBLEM STATEMENT: Keeping an office desk from becoming cluttered with papers and items such as pens, pencils, staplers, paper clips, Post-It Notes, and writing pads is a never-ending task. This hinders the work space, productivity and organization. DESIGN STATEMENT: Design and model a product that will reduce the clutter that accumulates on office desks and frees up space. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Study the information on the following pages. Using the steps in the Design Process, you will come up with a solution. Document your work (keep all brainstorming/sketches). 2. Brainstorm and sketch/annotate two possible solutions. 3. Use grid paper to sketch ideas and the two possible solutions. You will need to pencil sketch the product s parts in detail with dimensions and notes. You must show the completed set of preliminary detailed sketches to Mr. Spina BEFORE starting the CAD drawings. 4. Create working (multiview) drawings fully dimensioned and annotated for each of the parts in AutoCAD (do this before utilizing SketchUP). 5. Create all the 3D parts to the design solution using SketchUP. 6. Assemble the solution fully constrained and also create an exploded view. The organizer should meet the list of constraints below. Don t forget the end user for your product is a high school student, and therefore should be aesthetically appealing to this group. As always you should follow the steps in The Design Process. The best final product will be printed out on the 3D printer for further evaluation (if available). CONSTRAINTS: Must not attach to the desk but must not slide around either. May not have a footprint that exceeds 5 depth x10 width x 5 height. (NOTE: 3D printer build plate size is 5 x5 x5 ) Must include a recessed area, a bent plastic part and have a base ½ thick. Must have a minimum of 3 different parts once assembled. Must hold a minimum of six items (identify them in your report). Must have a decal or embossed logo NOTE: As always make sure to complete your project by following the order of the Design Process, and show/include ALL YOUR WORK.
STEP 1: DEFINE THE PROBLEM STEP 2: CONDUCT RESEARCH utilize the internet, view the examples Powerpoint on class website discuss with peers, parents, and instructor *precisely* measure all required equipment and note dimensions (how will they be secured?) STEP 3: GENERATE IDEAS FOR POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS Now that you fully understand the problem and have conducted some research, it is time to BRAINSTORM as many ideas as possible. Remember quantity over quality at this point! write down ideas (words) doodle ideas (basic sketches or scribbles )
STEP3: CONTINUED Rough Sketches Generate a minimum 2 totally different ideas and their corresponding sketches. These sketches can be hand generated, but should be well thought out and detailed products (label, dimension & note important features about each design). Product A Product B
STEP 4: CHOOSE THE BEST SOLUTION AutoCAD Drawing Choose one of your 2 product solutions, and create a detailed final drawing utilizing AutoCAD. This final drawing must be accurate and complete. Include dimensions and notation as required to fully explain your product design. Print the drawing to scale, utilizing our class pen settings and CAD standards. STEP 5: BUILD A PROTOTYPE & MODEL SketchUP 3D Model Import your final CAD drawing (construction/working drawing) into SketchUP to create a 3D model. The 3D model must be drawn to scale, and accurately include all details. If your design is selected it will be printed out on a 3D printer and should function properly. Export and print 2 views of your model. We will discuss how to export a SketchUP model file to STL file for 3D printing. Prototype (or 3D print if available) Utilize your CAD drawing (print to scale as a template) and SketchUP model to help you create a prototype of your product. The prototype should be neatly constructed and function as intended. Use card stock, bristol board, or cardboard as building materials. STEP 6: TEST & EVALUATE THE SOLUTION Test it Put your prototype to the test. Place the organizer on your desk and insert the required equipment into the organizer. Take a picture and print. Evaluate it (record your answers below in complete detailed sentences) Now that you have tested the physical product, think about the following. 1. How well does your prototype work? Explain. 2. Does it meet all the listed requirements? 3. How well does it hold/layout the equipment? 4. Is the design aesthetically pleasing, and functional? 5. Ask a peer what they like and don t like about your design. 6. Do you like your final design? Why? 7. What would you change?
STEP 7: REPORT ON THE PROCESS Final Report Type a one page summary of the (design) process you followed to complete your design (font 12, single spacing). Print and organize all your work in proper order and staple with a title page. MARKING CRITERIA: Preliminary Design Stages 1, 2, 3, & Problem is clearly defined? Adequate rough research conducted? Sufficient brainstorming and sketching? Best solution (AutoCAD drawing) includes notes, details and dimensions? 3D MODEL Detailed 3D model reflects Best Solution? Clearly labeled/noted, title ect...? To scale and dimensioned accurately? FINISHED PROTOTYPE Prototype holds equipment? Neatly constructed, and functions as intended? Attractive, efficient design (obvious thought shown in design) TEST AND EVALUATE Picture of prototype included with all equipment inserted? Hand written answers are complete and thorough? REPORT ON THE PROCESS One page typed summary is complete and thorough? Neatly presented (title page, heading, page # s, illustrations, captions ect..? FINAL MARK: Overall grade for the assignment.
