2 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 2 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The second year of CAD Technology is intended for students interested in pursuing careers and/or furthering their education in drafting, designing, engineering, or a related job in the field. The emphasis of this course is on the use of industry standard CAD software to produce engineering drawings that are the global language of industry. Students will produce mechanical drawings that include threads, fasteners, cams, gears, and developments. Working drawings, presentation drawings, and 3-D modeling will also be studied. Students will learn to use the mechanical design process to solve mechanical design problems, individually and in teams. Students will be encouraged to enter problem-solving and design competitions. Separately we assess students to gauge progress and inform instruction. Benchmark assessments for students in grades 9 through 12 are administered in the form of a midterm and final exam for full year courses. *Special Note: Only final exams are administered at the end of quarter courses and semester RATIONALE The CAD II program offers students the opportunity to prepare and present 3-D models of their drawings, utilizing the computer to enhance the quality of the work being undertaken. The revision of the Mechanical Drawing II/CAD Design Technology II curriculum reflects practices currently being utilized in the industry today. Students will create designs using computer-aided software known as AutoCAD and Inventor. The updated newly revised program will consistently refer to the standards currently being employed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It also closely aligns with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Technology and 21 st Century Life and Careers.

3 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 3 THE LIVING CURRICULUM Curriculum guides are designed to be working documents. Teachers are encouraged to make notes in the margins. Written comments can serve as the basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in the classroom and to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for curriculum reforms as needed. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION During the development of this course of study, particular attention was paid to material, which might discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or creed. Every effort has been made to uphold both the letter and spirit of affirmative action mandates as applied to the content, the texts and the instruction inherent in this course. MODIFICATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS For guidelines on how to modify and adapt curricula to best meet the needs of all students, instructional staff should refer to the Curriculum Modifications and Adaptations included as an Appendix in this curriculum. Instructional staff of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) must adhere to the recommended modifications outlined in each individual plan.

4 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 4 GOALS The students will: produce sets of working and assembly drawings that include orthographic and three-dimensional views using ANSI standards. learn about fasteners, threads, cams, gears, simple machines, and other engineering details, as well as how these features are incorporated into the design of machines. learn about the sheet metal section of the industry, and how to draw sheet metal developments. learn to use the design process to solve mechanical design problems. learn advanced CAD functions, including 3-D modeling shortcuts for more efficient use of CAD and basic customization of the software. explore career options associated with the industry.

5 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 5 C O U RS E P RO F I C I E N C I E S / O BJ EC T IV ES COURSE: TEC635 TITLE: ENGINEERING C A D II IN ACCORDANCE WITH DISTRICT POLICY AS MANDATED BY THE NEW JERSEY ADMINISTRATIVE CODE AND THE NEW JERSEY STUDENT LEARNING STANDARDS, THE FOLLOWING ARE PROFICIENCIES REQUIRED FOR THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE ABOVE NAMED COURSE. The students will: 1. identify and describe various types of fasteners. 2. produce detailed, schematic, and simplified thread representations. 3. specify threads and fasteners on a technical drawing. 4. apply specified symbols to CAD drawings. 5. identify the types of working drawings. 6. draw a title block. 7. draw working drawings to ANSI standards. 8. prepare drawings using specified patterns. 9. specify seams, laps, and hems on patterns/drawings. 10. utilize cam and gear terms in their drawings. 11. develop a displacement diagram. 12. develop a profile of a cam. 13. draw a gear. 14. use solid-modeling software. 15. print 2-D projections with annotations. 16. produce assembly drawings. 17. create an animated presentation model. 18. identify the stages in the mechanical design process. 19. reverse engineering of a common product. 20. utilize the design process to solve a given design problem.

6 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 6 GRADING PROCEDURES Daily short-term assessments, which may include the following: 20% Active engagement in class/group activities Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of course material Demonstration of skills and safety practices during lab work Written and oral reports Quizzes Homework Work folder Substantial assessments, which may include the following: 80% Worksheets/Sketches CAD Drawings/Solid model drawings Tests Authentic assessment problem drawings and/or prototypes The final examination (12% of final grade) will include: Written exam (50%) CAD Drawing (50%) Final Grade Full Year Course Each marking period shall count as 20% of the final grade The midterm assessment will count as 10% of the final grade, and the final assessment will count as 10% of the final grade.

16 TEC631 ENGINEERING CAD II 16 SAMPLE AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT Engineering CAD II You are working with a sports drink company as a summer intern, and they are planning a marketing campaign to distribute logo merchandise. One item being considered is a sport bottle that must meet the following criteria: It must hold 0.5 liters of liquid drink, have a pull-top and/or flexible spout, be shaped for joggers, cyclists, boaters, or other sports enthusiasts. Due to your CAD training, you become especially interested in this project and offer your assistance. Your supervisor is excited by the prospect, and tells you that certain procedures will need to be addressed. Therefore, you will need to design a sport bottle, taking into consideration size, shape for usability, research current bottle types using Websites and store catalogs/visits, create accurate CAD drawings, develop and test a prototype model for marketability, and deliver an oral presentation to the marketing department of the company.
