5 Introduction The Rockstar In You Will Smith s publicist once told me that when she worked at Burger King, she viewed herself as successful then and acted like it. She said, People will notice, even if it s working at Burger King, you can be the rockstar of Burger King. She was a rockstar then, and she s a rockstar now. You can be a rockstar, no matter what you re up to or where you are with your music. Actually, you re a rockstar NOW, or never at all. You have to be a rockstar, right now, today, in the position you have, with the music you have, in the day job you may have, otherwise, you ll never be. It s not like in a few years, once you get to a certain level or start charting, then you get to be and act like a rockstar. Start where you are.

6 You have it. It s just about whether you re letting it show up. Are you ready to say now is the time? I ve had the good fortune to work firsthand with many of today s leading music stars. Running the celebrity division of Wilhelmina Models in New York, I was the imaging and marketing agent for people such as Beyonce, Usher, Jessica Simpson, Brandy, Eve, and many other music and sports stars. I ve been with them on the red carpet at the Grammy s and VMA s. I ve also been with them at 5 am when they re getting up for makeup call for a photo shoot. I was able to witness the behind-the-scenes of what made these people the success that they are. I also had a hand in contributing to their success through their marketing, imaging, and endorsements. Spending a lifetime being curious about what makes certain people successful, and then experiencing it firsthand within the entertainment world has led me to write this book and develop

7 my image-building philosophies. It s what has currently led me to be an image coach and work with a range of musicians and artists to help them follow through with their goals and build their image. Often, a person s success depends on how well they are able to establish their own image, or brand. When people typically think of an image, they think of photographs, a hairstyle, or style of clothing. While an image does consist of such things, the kind of imaging I do with people goes way beyond that. In this book, I m not going to tell you to lose 10 lbs. or convince you that you have to grow a goatee. My strategy for building a compelling, rockstar image is to have you look within, harness what really makes you great, and then have you express that to the fullest. I am your coach in this process. My version of a rockstar image is about getting clarity on who you are as a person so that your image is a natural reflection of Who You Are on the inside. It starts with having a strategy for getting to where you want to go. It s making sure

8 that you re outward expression matches your inner passion. It s not about pretending. It s about creating your image from the inside out, cultivating the best you possible. A rockstar image is all about portraying who you are in a compelling way. It s about engaging people. But how can you do that if you don t know who you are? So it starts with knowing yourself deeply so that in just being yourself, you connect to others and project your best image. You do this because you ve tapped into what you love about yourself and what you re up to, and you are just expressing it. It s through that kind of self-expression that s led other rockstars to their success and will lead you to the success you deserve. From there, it involves mastering your craft and defining your sound. The next step is creating a look that is completely you, yet distinguishes you from other artists. And finally, a rockstar image is complete when every aspect of a live performance is mastered, both on stage and off.

9 Rockstars live with their souls out in the open. They have something to say, and they say it in their own creative way. They are willing to put themselves on the line for their creative expression. They have been blessed with gifts. They have strengths. So do you. The question is: How are your gifts and strengths being received? All an image is: An image is the fullest, intelligently-packaged, outward expression of your inner gifts. It is the doorway that people use to get an impression of you. It's the sum total of your selfexpression packaged in such a way that people are able to get you. It s portraying who you are in a compelling way.

10 People don't get an impression from you; they get an impression from the image that you project. It s trite but true. People do decide what they think of you by the impression that you make on them. And you generally get one chance to make that impression. Talent is not enough. Many musicians have talent, we all know that. It s probably frustrating to see people with less talent than you on the radio, in the press, and on TV. With so many people having talent, it s often the intangibles that set someone apart. You may have talent, but if you re not doing all you can with the talent that you ve been given, if you re not packaged in such a way that it truly connects to others, then it s not going to work.
