November 2013 Model Fiesta 33 Under way! 3D Printing An exclusive club s demonstration IPMS/USA Quarterly contest for November: Frankenstein Scan our QR Code with your cell phone to access our web site! & Chapter of the Year Alamo Squadron October

By Jerry Escobedo The October meeting was a special meeting for all of us, as our dear Dee Jacobs stepped down as President of the Alamo Squadron. Her husband and fellow club member Mark found a very good job opportunity in the state of Mississippi, and they had to act fast for him to start working. With a touching announcement, Dee gave her thanks to all the members for all the s upport while she was in office, but Assured us that she will still head the ModelFiesta vendor tables. All of us at Alamo Squadron will miss you guys! Godspeed in your new endeavors! I want to officially welcome our long time member and friend, Tom Sprawls, to the Office as the new VicePresident. Welcome back to the brain trust, Tom! We had also an amazing dialog with our newest member, Carl Allsup, about 3D printing. This technology, although not completely new, it's gaining more traction in the modeling world as it can fill in the gaps where injection molding is not sufficient or too costly. But again, I don't see an "only 3D printing" modeling trend in the near future, at least not in a whole kit made entirely on a 3D printer. But hey, who knows, maybe Carl is will spearhead this trend. Carl gave the club attendees examples of his work, the details and precision were remarkable. Alamo Squadron - November 2013 Many of us attended the Region 6 convention and contest in Austin, on October 5th. Our friends in the Capital City set up a great contest in the nice Norris Conference Center. I wonder who would make a Chuck Norris figure in his Texas Ranger uniform just for the name-sake! The Alamo Squadron brought home some good First, Second and Third Places (including one for a paper model from yours truly); so I can say the harvest in autumn was not bad at all. And remember!! Quarterly theme-based contest is Frankenstein, which is something like re-injecting the molding of an old kit under new name. A very adhoc theme for the season! Enough said, lets get back to build something fun, worthy of show-and-tell. 2

1. Dee Jacobs opened the meeting and made the unexpected announcement that she was stepping down as President effective that evening because was relocating to Picayune, Mississippi, within a week or so. Jerry Escobedo, as Vice President, will succeed her and the E-Board will appoint an interim Vice President to finish out the term of office. 2. Jerry Escobedo introduced our guest speaker, Carl Allsup, who gave an interesting talk and demonstration of resin products he had created using the 3D printing process that is currently an emerging technology. He passed around several examples of resin products that he had created in 1/700 scale for ship builders that were truly amazing. He indicated that he could produce these products in any scale desired. Not only was his presentation informative, but it generated a number of queries regarding printing replacement model parts or special conversion parts. And, Carl joined Alamo Squadron as well, at the conclusion of his remarks. Welcome aboard Carl! 3. Lee Forbes, Treasurer, provided an oral financial report and discussed his contacts with a number of treasurers both within and outside IPMS Region 6 concerning how their club bank accounts were set up. 4. Kent Knebel, ModelFiesta33 Director, provided an update on Model Fiesta 33 and indicated the new contest flyer would be ready for its debut at the Austin Region 6 Convention, Saturday, October 5. Dee Jacobs will remain as our Virtual Vendor Coordinator for ModelFiesta33 operating via the Internet from her new home in Mississippi. All vendor checks will be mailed to Lee Forbes for deposit rather than to Dee. Plans are for Dee to return to San Antonio Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15, to handle her vendor responsibilities just as she s done in the past. 5. Lee Forbes briefly discussed that our club polo shirt and cap vendor still offers these products and covered the prices for various sizes and fees for less than one dozen lot orders. This led to a discussion about ordering caps for sale at ModelFiesta33 as a fund raiser. This also led to a suggestion that club members wear something distinctive to assist contest attendees who may have questions or require assistance at the show. Ideas such as vests or arm bands were suggested as possible options. 6. Dee Jacobs conducted the pen monthly contest and presented the awards to the contest winners. This month, first place went to Dave Herron for his F4F-4 Wildcat, second place went to Jerry Escobedo for his paper P-51 Mustang, The Flying Undertaker and third place went to Rick Stanley for his Chevy Dale Earnhart NASCAR. Congats guys! 7. Lee mentioned that even though October should have been a quarterly theme-based contest, called Frankenstein it didn t get put in the October newsletter to alert potential contestants, so the theme will be carried over to the November meeting. Frankenstein applies to models whose manufacturers discontinued them and later rereleased them or models that reappeared under another brand name, hence, the notion of the model returning from the dead. 8. Jerry Escobedo mentioned the Club s new Facebook page, conducted the Show-N-Tell and took photos of the contest winners and Show-N-Tell subjects that were presented. 9. Dee Jacobs dismissed the meeting and transferred all of the Club President s stuff to Jerry Alamo Squadron - November

By Lee Forbes Club member dues are due, and some are past due, but several members have stepped up and paid their 2013 dues this past month. Here are the members whose dues will expire before the end of 2013, or whose dues have already expired. They are listed below: DUE AUG 2013, DROP FROM ROLLS DATE DEC 1, KM, DUE SEP 2013, DROP FROM ROLLS DATE JAN 1, GJ, & KK, DUE OCT 2013, DROP FROM ROLLS DATE FEB 1, GK, 78254; TL, & KL, DUE NOV 2013, DROP FROM ROLLS DATE MAR 1, FR, DUE DEC 2013, DROP FROM ROLLS DATE APR 1, MCP, 78230; ESG, & SI, Hopefully guys, you ll settle with me at or before the November 7, meeting. I d sure like to get the 2013 dues collection wrapped up, before starting the 2014 dues collections that are just around the corner. As a reminder dues are still $12.00 a year. Please bring the exact cash, or check payable to IPMS Alamo Squadron, if you wish to pay me at any of our meetings. Or, you can mail me a check to my mailing address, Carlton Oaks, San Antonio, A number of Club members have chosen to do that. To all of you who have paid your 2013 dues already, thank you very much. As of this writing we have 72 Club members (that includes three Life members) on the active rolls. Five have left the Club for various reasons, mostly leaving the area or job schedules not permitting regular attendance at meetings, three have been dropped for non-payment of dues, and we have gained seven new members during this same time frame. I have researched a Business Account with Wells Fargo that is designed specifically for Social/Recreational Clubs that will negate having to file for any taxexempt status with the IRS or Incorporate. I ll provide details at our upcoming meeting. For several years now, Alamo Squadron has put on a model display initially at the H.B. Zachery Middle School, and currently at the DolphBriscoe Middle School on the Northwest Side. These displays have been held in conjunction with Alamo Squadron November 2013 the Veterans Day Celebrations hosted by these schools that are held each fall. We haven t been contacted by the School Project Officer yet, but no doubt will be soon. This to alert anyone interested in helping out with this anticipated display to let any E- Board member of your interest. In the past we have displayed models from our Fighter Aces collection and individual models furnished by Club members. The school provides the display tables and chairs. Lunch is furnished and a good time is had by all. We have been invited to participate in another display at the Fall Fly-In at the Pioneer Aerodrome in Kingsbury, Texas, on Saturday, November 9. Details are provided in page 15 of this Newsletter. We ve done this for a couple of years in the past, but I ve never been pleased with the results of our effort that we had to put into the event. First off, we have to provide our own display tables and chairs and the hangar we are assigned has a dirt floor. And, we had to constantly monitor the models on the tables because of the wind that whipped through the hangar. Besides that, attendees are more focused on the WW I and vintage aviation aircraft that are featured in the event and less in our display of WW II or more modern aircraft subjects. I told the Project Officer that I d bring his interest in 4

our display of WW II or more modern aircraft subjects. I told the Project Officer that I d bring his request to the attention of the Club at our November meeting. The event is great and a lot of fun for attendees, but I m not in favor of setting up another display this year. If others Club members want to, that s great, but I don t plan on joining in on this one. Since the event is only two days after our meeting, there isn t much time to get a display organized. That ll be the Club s call. Unfortunately, we have another sad announcement to make this month. Shortly after Dee and Mark returned home to Picayune, MS, Mark s mother passed away. We made a small donation of $50.00 to the family for flowers or a memorial in Mark s mother s name. We also sent a sympathy card to Dee and Mark on behalf of the Club. If anyone would like to contact the family, Dee and Mark s mailing address is: 3047 Jackson Landing Rd, Apt B, Picayune, MS 39466, telephone: (210) Alamo Squadron - November

Our friend Dave Herron arrived early to the October meeting, showing off a neat Wildcat for the contest, which eventually won First Place. Congrats, Dave! Alamo Squadron November
