Keith Pipoly will be our demonstrator. President s Message By Bob Clark I would like to thank the members that attended the January meeting. We had a great turnout and picked up a new member. Our next meeting will be on March 20 th. Keith Pipoly will be presenting a demonstration on open segmented turnings. Keith has been making segmented turnings for quite some time so the demonstration should be a real treat. Here are some examples of Keith s open segment turnings. The meeting will be at Paul Boyd s shop located at st West, Quartz Hill, CA Driving directions will be included in the reminder letter prior to the meeting. AVWA s Gift to Help the People of Haiti At our January meeting the AVWA approved a $ donation to the American Red Cross in support of the Haiti earthquake relief effort. On Monday, January 25 th, Dan Yost and I had the honor of presenting the club s donation to Ms. Fran Stewart, Executive Director of the Antelope Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. This was one of those opportunities the AVWA watches for in order to reach out and help people that

really need it. At times of disasters we Americans are the most generous people in the world and I am proud that we as a club were part of that generosity.

Fran Stewart and Bob Clark AVWA Showing at the Lancaster Public Library Members of the AVWA have the opportunity to show their projects at the Lancaster Public Library from 2 nd to 31 st March. Members can display their items in the library s glass display case. We always get a good response from the public on the showing. Members wishing to display items will be required to leave them in the display for the entire display period and sign a form releasing the library from any liability. We have not lost any item in the several years we have participated. Items may not be offered for sale but information may be displayed with each item. Contact Charley Williams, Dan Yost, or Mickey Burns for details. The California Poppy Festival Save this date; April 24 & 25, The biggest event of our year is always at the California Poppy Festival at the Lancaster City Park. At this event members can sell their turnings as well as have an opportunity to demonstrate woodturning to the masses of people that come by our tent. We are always a crowd favorite so plan on being a part of it! Other Southern California Events John Jordan Workshop in Riverside There is a hands-on workshop with world famous woodturner, John Jordan, in Riverside CA on Friday, March 5th. This is a link to John Jordans website. The cost is $175 for the one-day workshop and that includes the wood. The shop has 5 high-end lathes and is fully equipped with tools. The shop is located at the junction of the 91 and 60 freeways in riverside. Contact Sven Hasselberg (951) if you are interested. Wood Easter Eggs This year Easter Sunday is falling on Sunday April 4 th. Each year I always planned on using my lathe to turn some wood Easter eggs for my family. As each year

progressed and Easter was near, I realized I had not made any eggs. Well, last year I thought of it in time and made about four dozen Easter eggs out of different colored woods.

Eggs are easy to make on a lathe and my family loved them. Here is a link to Woodturning Online where they explain how to make them. Since no two eggs are alike they don t need to be the same size. His address is hacksaw007@tds.net Mike is great to deal with, however, you do not need Colorwood as any hardwood makes great eggs! Start now so Easter does not sneak-up on you. Keep Turning - Bob EDITOR S CORNER By Dan Yost A thanks goes to Bob Clark, the AVWA president, for the January 2010 demonstration at his workshop. Even though the weather had been poor during the week with lots of rain, Saturday turned out to be a nice sunny day. The number of members and guests was very good with eighteen folks attending. Chuck Hilderbrand joined as a new member, welcome Chuck, many happy turnings. January was annual dues month and nearly all members are now paid-up and looking forward to another interesting year. The demonstration and events schedule was also determined. 4 Safety Section Hazards of Rotating Equipment By Dan Yost I worked in the Institutional Safety Office at Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) for several years and, therefore, was aware of safety incidents and accidents that occurred at DFRC, other NASA and industrial sites. An accident that reoccurred was an operator getting involved with a rotating machine. The safety directives are quite clear in both OSHA and DFRC instructions but these instructions were nearly always violated in a rotating equipment accident. In a nutshell, these directives restrict the wearing of lose long hair, jewelry, GLOVES, or anything that could become caught in the rotating equipment. I highlighted gloves because I have seen woodturners working with gloves on. When doing so the person is inviting an injury if the gloves catch, and they will. Even latex or other thin rubber gloves can pull a hand into the spinning lathe. Even gloves with the fingers cut out are not safe since the fabric can still become caught. Some people are hard to convince. A machinist at DFRC was briefed on this hazard but disregarded it one cold day by wearing gloves and as a result lost a part of a finger to a metal lathe.
