September 2018, Roll 83, Exposure 10 Editor Ron DeKett Website: twincitycameraclub.com Digital workshop: Dennis Hafer and Tom McCall will conduct a digital workshop for members only, focusing on enhancing photos from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at the clubhouse. They will provide images for the hands-on workshop, and they will provide individual instruction as needed. Dennis will share more of his meticulous skills and interesting tips and techniques. He says the class will have something for everyone. Bring your laptops. Come early to set up so we can start on time. Annual banquet: The 2018 TCCC Annual Awards Banquet is set for Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at Pebblewood Country Club, 9794 Jericho Road, Bridgman. Social time starts at 6 p.m. The dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Give money to Ted Post at meeting or mail payment to him. Pay at the door if you have made reservations. Call Sandy Hafer to make reservations at Reservations are required by Oct. 28. Information and directions are on the club website. The menu includes salad bar, roast beef, chicken rolls (chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with herb cheese and spinach), mashed potatoes, vegetable, rolls, water, coffee, and Bit of Swiss cake for dessert. A cash bar is available. The cost is $23 per person. 1
Composition: The club s Program Night will focus on Composition: What do you see, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22, presented by Dennis Hafer and Tom McCall. Travel with us on the road to good composition and learn more ways to better understand why composition is such an important part of photography. New member: Please welcome John Witt of Covert as the club s newest member. On behalf of our membership, we welcome you and wish you much success. We hope your experience in the club will be challenging, enjoyable, rewarding and most of all, fun. We look forward to seeing your competition entries. Officer elections: Nominations are being accepted for TCCC offices. The election will be during the Oct. 22 meeting. Interested members are asked to contact President Ken McKeown. Candidates so far are president, Ken McKeown; first vice president, Steve Campbell; second vice president, (open); secretary, Len Anderson; treasurer, Ted post; past president (open); and directors (two positions), Dennis Hafer and Barry Nelson. September POM: Congratulations go to Dennis Hafer whose image, Eleven Frames in One, was selected as the September Black & White Photo of the Month, and to Jim Lynch whose image, Great Horned Owl, was selected as the September Color Photo of the Month. Their photographs were selected among the September Honors winners by club members. Many thanks to the club members who participated in the vote. 2
October POM: Selections are now open for members to pick the October Photo of the Month. The October Honors are on the new Monthly Honors page on the TCCC web site. No Black & White Honors this month so select one (1) color photo and send your pick to Your vote counts. Select topics: The Select topic for November is Stripes. The object that is the focus of attention in the image must be something containing stripes. All members are encouraged to participate. The deadline for November entries is midnight, Monday, Nov. 5. images to If you are unable to find an image that fits the Select topic, you can submit photos under the Open category. The remaining Select topics are: December Emotions January Creative February (color) Purple / (b&w) Textures 3
March Farm Scenes April Modes of Travel May Nautical June Nature A full explanation of each topic is on the club website, twincitycameraclub.com. Review the Select subject description and the competition rules, including how to prepare your images for competition. Properly prepared and submitted photos makes it easier for the competition chairperson and those who keep scores, and it smooths the judging process. Titles must be: "Your name - Image Title" (Note the dash between the name and the title.) Program report: The fall photo critique was presented Sept. 25 by club members Dennis Hafer, Dan Brant and Tom McCall. It was an interactive constructive critique with the members as active participants. Some of the members after the critique said it was a good program, that they enjoyed it and always learned from the experience. Photo critiques are a good way of learning more about photography and how to judge your own photos. It's about what you SEE. You know how we are always saying Judging is subjective. Well, that's what a critique is, it's subjective too. If you are sincerely interested in learning how to improve your photography you should learn how to critique photos, including your own. A critique should be based on an informed opinion. You achieve an informed opinion with experience, technical knowledge, and training. We're here to help you gain that knowledge, training, and experience. We would like to thank the members who submitted their digital images for constructive criticism. We plan to have another critique in the spring. Submit prints: Club members are invited to submit up to five prints by Nov. 26 for consideration to be included for the displays on clubhouse walls. The prints must be print or digital photos that received an Acceptance or Honor award in past competitions. The prints should be prepared and sized just like an entry for the print competition. The prints would be displayed until next season. Thanks judges: Judges for the October competition were: Keith Alton, photographer, retired from Dee Color Labs; Tim Langlois, photographer, former president of TCCC; and, Dar Davis, entrant liaison and founder, Concours d'elegance of SWM. Many thanks to them. We appreciate that they took the time to judge for us. Street photography: The following is a list of prime street photography opportunities: Under the Harvest Moon, downtown Dowagiac, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Oct. 13. Haven Harvest Festival, all over South Haven, Oct HOWL-O-Ween at Fernwood, Fernwood Botanical Garden, Oct. 20. Silverbrook Cemetery Tour, corner of Main & Cherry streets, Niles, 10 a.m., Oct. 20. Halloween Happening at Fernwood, Fernwood Botanical Garden, Oct. 27. Good stuff, cheap: Need a camera bag or tripods? Look no farther than the Classified tab on the club website. Got stuff to sell? List it on the website s Classified section. Bring a friend: Help the club grow by bringing friends and encouraging them to join and enjoy the 4
world of creative photography. Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month. Competition night is on the second Monday, and program night is on the fourth Monday. Quotes of the Month: Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask how, while others of a more curious nature will ask why. Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information. Man Ray You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life. Joan Miro Thanks competitors: Thanks go to all those who submitted entries for the October competition. Nineteen members submitted 115 entries 91 in Select and 22 in Open resulting in 86 Acceptances, 5 Honors and 24 Rejects. October Honors: Congratulations go to club members whose entries were selected by judges as October Honors. The Honors winners are below and are posted on the club website. Class B Color Digital Deb Chamberlain Opening Chris Loose-Randall Bee on Flower Chris Loose-Randall Eye of Dog Class A Color Digital Dennis Hafer Downward Looking Tom McCall Going Back Out October Stats: The October stats will be posted on the TCCC website when Ted Post returns from vacation. Digital results: The October digital results are posted in the Member s Only section. Honor images: The October Honor images have been posted on a new Monthly Honors page for the season on the TCCC website. Visit the Website: Remember to regularly visit the club website, twincitycameraclub.com. Tom McCall is the webmaster and he regularly updates the site with tips and new information. Facebook: Don t forget about the club s Facebook page. Go to facebook.com and search for Twin City Camera Club. Judges needed: Members are asked that if they know of active photographers who aren't in the club but who may like to be a judge to please forward their information to gary@twincitycameraclub.com. Please Note: The new selections for our print displays at both the annual banquet and the clubhouse walls will be selected from the season prints. Please do not disturb the annual competition prints or pick up your prints at this time. 5
Roster photos: We need a photo of everyone for the roster. For those of you that haven t sent one in, please do so. Thanks Correction: The September 2018 ViewFinder listed the incorrect issue number. It should have read: Exposure 9. Keep those shutters clicking 6
