3 Minutes March 6, 2017 Opening Remarks, Welcome The meeting was called to order by President Ellen at 7:00. She noted that there is excess stuff on the back table. If it is yours or you can find a use for it, please take it with you at the end of the meeting. Approval of Agenda: Moved by Catherine Sutherland and seconded by Judy Boyd the approval of the agenda as published in March 2017 newsletter. Carried Approval of minutes February: Moved by Janet Melanson and seconded by Maxine O Donnell. The approval of the minutes as published in March 2017 newsletter with two corrections. Correspondence: Bob Clark sent a thank you card. Treasurers Report: Moved by Kim Reeleder and seconded by Catherine Sutherland the approval of the Treasurer s Report as published in the March Newsletter. Quilt Show 2017: Sue reported in Betty s absence. She brought hard copies of the registration form for quilt show. She noted the times for drop off and pick up of quilts. Each member can have two quilts hung. Secondary selection will be displayed in some manner. You can choose which of your quilts you wish to have hung. There is a separate category for various project ideas. Stay tuned, the categories will be provided in the April newsletter. Retreat Annette reported that the retreat is half full for registrants. More memberships will be accepted tonight. Super Saturday Sign up sheet is here for March 18 super Saturday. Betty will purchase additional hardware if you want to purchase so you can make additional bags. Debbie Flewelling gave some information about the April 22nd Super Saturday. She suggested bringing some 12 x 12 inch sandwiches, or bring placemats or a larger project that will be broken into smaller areas for free motion quilting. Mystery Quilt Janet W showed the two blocks for this month as directed in the newsletter. Teachers- Janet M & Diane S talked about the Gail Mitchell Oh Canada quilt class that will be given on May 13. There will be a $10 fee that includes the pattern. New Business Nominating Committee is required for the year. Committee is comprised by a past president, a member of the executive, and a person from the

4 general membership. Janet Melanson, Kim Reeleder and Doreen Antworth will serve on the committee. All executive positions except the Treasurer are up for nomination. Committee Reports, as per Newsletter March Program Doreen talked about the baggie of coloured candies distributed. DON T EAT THE CANDY! You must use the colours in your quilt project. You must explain how you arrived at those colours in your project writeup. (White is used to lighten, black is used to tone.) Use your colours to make a project of your choice. Due date is June Guild meeting. There will be judging and three prizes. Internet is a good resource for colour wheel information. March challenge was spring is coming. Members came up to show what they had made for spring. Lots of flowers tulips. As noted in the newsletter, April Challenge will be Rain. Catherine Sutherland showed three Swoon quilts for which members had made blocks and had given back to her. She handed them on to Gail for Community Quilts. Thank you Catherine for introducing the project and assembling the blocks into quilts. Trisha was looking for volunteers for the Riverside Court quilt day on March 14 and 28. Please or call Trisha if you can help out. Break After a break of socializing, tea and coffee, the meeting was called back to order for fabric draw. Fabric Draw - Sandra had four fabric prizes. Winners were Janet Wright, Doris Barrie, Jackie Walker, and Jean Cummings Show and Tell Lots of inspiration and enjoyment by members as we viewed the handiwork of members completed projects. At the March meeting I received three completed quilts, a top and backing which was tied at Riverside Court on the 14th, and three Swoonie quilt tops. 6 Super Saturday Up coming dates :-April 22nd...free motion quilting..debra Flewelling :-May 27th...Margie Grieve..project TBA Super Saturday Machine Quilting April 22, 2017 Instructor: Debbie Flewelling Supplies checklist: Sewing machine (preferably one that has the capability to lower/cover feed dogs) Darning/Free Motion Foot Lots of good quality thread (cotton, or polyester) coordinated to your project choice. Quilting gloves or aides like rubber fingers.(optional) Supreme Slider (optional) Water soluble marking pen (optional) Note pad and pencil Bag of Confidence Quilt Sandwich according to your choice of project See below) Project Options 1. Several squares measuring about 9 inches sandwiched with batting (cotton, wool, or even polyester) and fixed with spray base, or safety pins. Each square will be quilted in a different way, throughout the day as the designs are instructed. 2. One 40 x 40 sandwich that is not highly patterned fixed with spray base, or safety pins, or both. This will then be divided by stitching sections, which will then be quilted in various patterns throughout the day as designs are instructed. 3. A quilt that has already been pieced, (or one that you have already started quilting) and Debbie will offer suggestions, support for helping you complete (or get started) on your quilting project----- or you can be just left alone to spend your time quilting. We will begin the day with a brief overview: Topics of discussion will include: machine prep., batting, thread, design planning, marking options, etc.

7 Then we will get down to it with a demonstration of a basic design. Then there will be time to practice with hands-on help for those participants where needed. The time will be spent alternating between instruction and practice. (basic stippling, leaves, crosshatching, pebbles, feathers, motif quilting, swirls, and more ) Program Committee: I cannot wait to see April s challenge of RAIN. It has been interesting to see what everyone has been making along the themes. So for May I would like to give you the challenge of baskets. Let that inspire you!!!! Also your Jelly Bean color challenge is due at the June meeting. Remember the project has to be completed and you need to add a write up of how you used your colors. There may be a thimble in this newsletter. If you find it let me know at the meeting and a bead you will receive. There is only one month left for search for the thimble. Here are your 2 blocks of the month. They will all be from this website. The address is All these blocks will be 12 blocks. Crown and Star Quatrefoils Doreen A

8 Maple leaf Challenge With 46 members now participating we have a total of 139 blocks completed. Only 11 more needed to finish our challenge. Who else will do the blocks for our Quilt Show? Don t you want to be a part of this wonderful challenge? Get busy and see if you can do this. It s not hard. Can you guess who has made the most? It is 16 beautiful blocks. I think maybe this member needs a prize? Looking forward to the last 1 blocks next month or maybe more if you get busy. ONLY NEXT MONTH LEFT!!!! Retreat Just a reminder that, as always, our retreat is being held at the Villa Madonna. Please let us know ASAP so we can reserve your room. Just a reminder, after the April meeting we will be inviting non-members who attended last year, and then we will open it up to others. 9 FYI There is a Singer sewing machine dealer/ servicer from Nova Scotia that services domestic and commercial machines that occasionally comes this way. He is willing to work on machines in the area providing there are enough people to make the trip worthwhile. (He also has family up here.) If you are interested, the phone number is Bridgewater Sewing Center. He services other models as well. For Sale: Rolling quilting frame. Solid wood and it holds a Queen and maybe a King. Asking $ Please see Betty Butler Newsletter Mystery Quilt Chapter 4 Block F : Make Eight Draw a diagonal line, corner to corner, on the diagonal of A1 square. Place the A1 on D3, wrong sides together Stitch on the line. Trim and press

10 Block G Make four Prepare the upper two corners of this block (X1 is A1) using the same technique as Block F. Pay attention to the position according to the diagram. The lower corners are pieced the same way. QUILT SHOW ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ QUILT SHOW The countdown is on for the quilt show! Here are a few reminders... Please get your registration forms in soon, as we have to get the info cards printed. If you have items you would like to sell indicate that on the registration form so the card can be marked with your contact information. Only the quilts will be judged for the viewer s choice. So if you are entering a project, eg: super Saturday quilt or group project and you want it to be considered, enter it under the quilt category. Remember to attach a 6 inch hanging sleeve to the quilt and label the quilt with your name and the exact dimensions of the quilt in inches. Items need to be dropped off in clear plastic bags.

11 Vendors...if there is something specific that you want a vendor to bring contact them ahead of time about this so they can bring it. If you have quilt racks, laundry baskets, easels that we can borrow please let us know and they can be dropped off on set up day...label with your name.
