2 2019 CAMPS Go on an incredible science adventure this summer! There s a camp for every young explorer whether you want to be an astronaut, an archaelogist or an engineer. For a full schedule of our camps see pages 6-7 or visit GRADES K 1 GRADES 2 3 BRAIN GAMES CODING 101 Games teach social skills, communication, sharing and focus. They re also fun. In Brain Games, campers will learn a bunch of new games that focus on strategy, creativity, imagination and concentration. Join us to blow bubbles, play instruments, run, jump and learn. Get ready to decipher coding language and crack open a computer in this fun and interactive camp. Coding 101 will teach programming through fun activities involving all kinds of new technology and well known titles such as Minecraft and Scratch. We ll kick off this camp by programming and controlling robots! DIG IT What could be hidden under their feet? In Dig It, our campers will learn all about the ground beneath us, including finding and unearthing fossils. They ll also investigate the organisms that live underground, crack geodes, explore volcanoes and make treasure chests for their discoveries. INSECT INVESTIGATORS Prepare for an insect adventure as our investigators will go on bug safaris, do their own bee dances, build insect models, learn about bug communication, form ant colonies and become more familiar with the tiny critters that make up a large part of our world. H2O AND YOU Water is one of the most essential components of life, in all its forms. Campers will discover ice, clouds, the water cycle, rivers, oceans and more through exciting activities. They ll even get to beat the heat by splashing around during our get-wet water day. MAGIC TREE HOUSE EXPLORERS Take your own Magic Tree House adventure like Jack and Annie! Campers will travel to the moon, visit an observatory, learn about space stations and enjoy daily story time in a hands-on learning environment. SPACE CADETS Outer Space is huge in such an expansive universe where are we located? Our space cadets will discover their place in the cosmos, make moonscapes, participate in Gravity Games and sky watch. Get ready for an epic adventure. 2 ECO-ADVENTURE What impact do we have on the environment and its animal inhabitants? On this eco-adventure our campers will make birdhouses, clean oil spills, learn about ways to help preserve the environment and meet real live animals at the end of this camp. They ll focus on critters native to North Carolina in this truly wild week. INSIDES OUT Discover what s inside a body and how it works with fun and gross hands-on experiments. Campers will delve into some of the gross things our bodies do to keep us healthy. And they ll learn why things like boogers and farts are actually important to us. INVENTORS AT PLAY What toys use magnets? How do Frisbees fly? Our inventors will explore these questions and more as they use Newton s Laws of Motion to create toy cars, make circuits and experiment with flight. At the end of the week, campers will put on their hardhats and create their own toy inventions. MUSIC MARVELS What makes the sounds required to produce everything from Beethoven to today s hottest hits? Campers will investigate the physics of sound, learn about different cultures and their musical instruments. They ll cap this week of art, culture and science by designing, creating and playing new musical instruments. STAR STORIES Discover the mysteries of the night as seen through the eyes of Indian, Mayan, Greek, Egyptian and Native American cultures. Campers will use their new knowledge of our sky to help present their own original show in the GSK Fulldome Theater to our staff astronomers.
3 GRADES 4 5 GRADES 6 8 ASTRONOMY: INTERSTELLAR VOYAGE Check out our full-day SciVentures experiences for grades 6-8 on page 4. Build telescopes, create logbooks and take daily visits to the GSK Fulldome Theater, all while exploring gravity, fusion and the life cycle of stars. On this voyage, students will work together to create a space station and explore the possibility of colonizing distant worlds. COMPUTER SCIENCE: CODING 201 You ve learned the basics; now level up with! This camp will take a more in-depth look at the world of programming through cool new technology and activities. Campers do not need any prior coding experience to enjoy this camp. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING: GOING GREEN Feel the power of sustainable energy! Campers will learn all about energy and where it comes from while discovering the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energies. Our engineers will create their own power through windmills, solar ovens and water wheels. We ll also tell them where to find renewable resources in North Carolina. This camp is electrifying! REGISTER FOR SUMMER SCIENCE CAMPS IN 3 EASY STEPS! 1 CHOOSE YOUR CAMPS 2 REGISTER ONLINE 3 SUBMIT REQUIRED CAMP FORMS ENGINEERING: LEGO ROBOTICS Discover the intersection of programming and engineering with tools like LEGO Mindstorms and PicoCrickets. Our engineers will not only build with LEGO bricks but also create working robots with multiple sensors designing their own basic computer programs. Beware: Artificial intelligence may take over after this camp! OCEANOGRAPHY: SEAQUEST Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet but humans know more about the surface of the Moon than about Earth s sea floor. During Oceanography, campers will build a model submarine and take a dive to discover how creatures use camouflage in the deep ocean. They ll use snack tectonics to examine the ocean floor, learn about tsunamis, make waves and they ll eat like a whale in this sea quest. Use the information in this camp guide and on our website to choose the camps that match your child s school grade level in Fall 2019 and your child s interests. Go to moreheadplanetarium.org/camp When registration opens, you ll see a Register Now button appear on the camp homepage click the button and follow the instructions. After you register online, you ll receive a confirmation . (This may take up to 30 minutes to arrive. If you don t see it in your inbox, check your spam folder!) Morehead uses the Active.com registration system, so you may see Active.com instead of Morehead in your online billing record. BIOLOGY: ANIMAL ODDITIES The animal kingdom is full of surprises. Learn about weird animal behaviors and adaptions that help animals survive on Earth. Camouflage, scents, mimicry and even dancing are important parts of our natural world. Campers will track ants, observe birds and model animal shelters in this wild camp. 3
4 SciVentures SUMMER SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR GRADES 6 8 This full-day experience gives middle schoolers the opportunity to explore fascinating real-world science themes in-depth! Each week-long program combines practical lab work and fun hands-on activities, allowing your child to envision themselves with a career in the sciences. SciVentures SciVentures COLONIZING THE GALAXY SciVentures Design, construct and test your own personal drone. Explore the laws of physics and what makes things fly. Become a pilot and fly your drone through a series of obstacles to learn how much fun technology can really be! Controlling your drone is just the beginning by the end of camp, you will be able to identify different types of fun flying vehicles, know how they work and even take your drone home with you! The sky is the limit in this exciting and innovative SciVentures experience! Why haven t we been to Mars yet? In this full day experience, participants will explore the answer to this question and more, as they learn about some of the essentials for space travel and colonization. Look into the history of space travel, build rockets, grow bacteria, test soil viability and try to design a working human habitat for an alien planet in this SciVentures journey. Become a part of the fast-paced world of emergency medicine. Learn to diagnose cases and try to solve medical mysteries the way health care professionals do. In the lab, learn basic first aid and use laboratory tools to identify microbes and pathogens. Explore UNC Hospitals, spend time in an ambulance, and talk with the pros about what it takes to run an emergency room. Turn on your sirens and grab your gear; Morehead s taking you to the ER! 4
