1 Year 3 IPC Topics Each unit of work is part of the International Primary Curriculum. This new curriculum sets out very clearly what children will learn the learning goals in three different areas: 1. The subjects of the curriculum. The learning goals for each of these subjects are at least as challenging as anything taught in the curriculum in your child s own country. In many cases, the learning goals are more challenging. 2. Personal development the characteristics which will help children become more responsible, independent learners. 3. International understanding which will help children develop both a sense of the independence of their own country and culture and the interdependence between countries and cultures. Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects. All of the work we are going to do has been specially written to help your child reach the learning goals. Children will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating, working on their own and working in groups. We will be checking to see how well your child has learned through particular activities and asking children to explain their work, perhaps to you. We already know the interest you take in your child s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work they have done as each term progresses and let them teach you. If your child has some work to research, please help them, but without actually doing the work. If you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of any of the themes please take it, but your enthusiasm and interest is most important. By the end of each unit, we hope your child will have achieved all of the learning targets. We hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom and we hope you have enjoyed seeing your child work with enthusiasm. Term 1 Topic Explorers and Adventurers During this unit we will be focusing on Geography, History, Art, Society, Science and In Geography, we ll be finding out: How to use geographical terms How to use different types of world maps How to look for geographical information About places we have explored on holiday
2 In History, we ll be finding out: About explorers and adventurers in the past How to gather information from maps, pictures and books How to answer simple questions about exploration How explorers told the time and navigated at sea About the artwork of explorer-artists How to draw plants and animals with accuracy How to draw an imaginary plant or animal In Society, we ll be finding out: If we think exploration is a good thing About conflict and exploration in the past About female explorers in the past and today About shadows and the sun About magnetism and which metals are magnetic How to make a compass How sounds are made In International, we ll be finding out: How exploration has changed the world Who owns the Moon and planets in space Talk with your child about famous explorers, particularly those from your host or home country. You could help your child to develop knowledge of the topic through books and the internet. Topic - Chocolate During this unit we will be focusing on Geography, History, Science, Technology, Art and In Geography, we ll be finding out: Where cacao trees are found About the factors affecting the growth of cacao trees About other cash crops
3 In History, we ll be finding out: Who first discovered chocolate Who took the first chocolate to Europe About the importance of cocoa beans for trade About the ingredients in chocolate If chocolate causes tooth decay Why chocolate wrappers are made from special materials What the melting point of chocolate is In Technology, we ll be finding out: How to make our own chocolate What we can add to chocolate How to design a wrapper for our chocolate bar In International, we ll be finding out: What fair trade chocolate is What other fair trade products there are How important chocolate is Have a look in your kitchen cupboards with your child for products containing cocoa or chocolate. Make a game of spotting chocolate advertising on billboards, in magazines and on television. Term 2 Topic Do You Live Around Here? During this unit we will be focusing on Geography, Technology, History, Art, Science, and In Geography, we ll be finding out: About homes around the world About the ways in which different people live their lives About homes in our home countries and host country
4 In Technology, we ll be finding out: How to design a comfortable shelter How to make mud bricks How to make a shelter from straw How to design a house using local materials In History, we ll be finding out: About the different homes we have lived in Whether homes in the local area have changed About prehistoric cave paintings How to make paints from natural materials About folk art such as sand painting About artists who are inspired by the local habitat About different habitats within the school grounds How to investigate a local habitat About pond life and how it has adapted How to sort animals into groups Who eats who food chains and food webs Seasonal changes to habitats and migration In International, we ll be finding out: About homes and habitats in different countries About habitats of global importance that are at risk Talk with your child about your home and the place where you live, and about places where you have lived in the past. Explain how your home suits your family s needs. Think about the homes (or habitats ) where animals live and how animals are adapted to their different ways of life.

6 In Geography, we ll be finding out: About how the Earth is formed What a volcano island is and where they are in the world What causes an earthquake How earthquakes can be measured In Technology, we ll be finding out: What makes buildings strong About protective clothing and equipment About how to put together a survival kit What happens when a volcano erupts What happens when rock melts How volcanoes can give off poisonous gas In Music, we ll be finding out: How to use instruments to make sound pictures How to compose our own piece of music In History, we ll be finding out: About the devastation of Pompeii About hot and cold colors About using different materials and techniques to represent a volcano In Physical Education, we ll be finding out: How to use lots of different sequences of movement to show the story of volcanoes In Society, we ll be finding out: About legends associated with volcanoes Why people continue to live in volcanic areas despite the dangers
7 In International, we ll be finding out: About international organisations that work after natural disasters About the knock-on effects of earthquakes and volcanic activity Talk with your child about recent earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis you might have read about in newspapers or seen on television. Topic Time and Place, Earth and Space During this unit we will be focusing on Science, Geography, Technology, ICT, Society and In Science, we ll be: Finding out about the sun and the Earth, how they move and interact and how this relates to the passage of time, day and night and the seasons Finding out about shadows, how they are formed and how we can use them to measure time In Geography, we ll be: Finding out how the movement of the Earth around the Sun creates different seasons, weather patterns and natural environments around the world Finding out how human activities can be affected by the different seasons around the world Finding out how the Earth is divided into different time zones and how this impacts on human activity and communications Finding out how to locate countries and places using latitude and longitude on a Globe In Technology, we ll be: Looking at the appropriateness of individual technologies, as well as their positive benefits and limitations in relation to a specific time and place Designing and making a calendar and a sun dial In ICT, we ll be: Using technology to locate and download information for research projects Finding out about communications technology worldwide and those that help society interact using transport, including journeys between different time zones
8 In Society, we ll be: Finding out about festivals and traditions connected with light which measure the passage of time In International, we ll be: Finding out about similarities and differences between people in different parts of the world to which we are connected by lines of latitude and longitude.
