Many of the fussy-cut pieces used in this quilt will be cut off grain in order to center the motif.

stabilize any bias edges. Row 1 - Bug Jars Select the five fussy-cut 5 ½" x 6 ½" bug jar rectangles and 20-1 ½" x 1 ½" White Jacks squares.

Place a marked square on a corner of the jar rectangle, pin, and stitch on the diagonal line, as shown.

Fold White Jacks square back into position. Repeat with all corners for each jar rectangle.

Select the Lime Happy Ladybugs, fussy-cut Navy Happy Bugs, and Orange Ladybugs (cut from the Multi Happy Stripe) rectangles.

For jar lid units, sew a 1 ½" x 3 ½" Yellow Dots, Blue Happy Daisies, and Green Dots rectangle to a 1 ½" x 3 ½" White Jacks rectangle.

Sew the lid unit to the jar unit, pressing seams toward the lids. These blocks should measure 7 ½" x 8 ½".

Sew 1 ½" x 6 ½" White Jacks rectangles to the right side of the dragonfly and the left side of the butterfly.

4 Page 4 of 11 Read all instructions before beginning this project. All pieces are sewn right sides together with a scant ¼" seam allowance, unless otherwise noted. Many of the fussy-cut pieces used in this quilt will be cut off grain in order to center the motif. To avoid stretching these pieces, handle gently, use a dry iron, press with an up-and-down motion, and consider using spray sizing to help stabilize any bias edges. Row 1 - Bug Jars Select the five fussy-cut 5 ½" x 6 ½" bug jar rectangles and 20-1 ½" x 1 ½" White Jacks squares. Make the contours of the jars using the following method. With a ruler, mark a diagonal line on the WRONG side of each white square. Place a marked square on a corner of the jar rectangle, pin, and stitch on the diagonal line, as shown. Fold the point back to form a triangle corner then press carefully. Fold the triangle back and trim the underlying layers a ¼" from the seam. Fold White Jacks square back into position. Repeat with all corners for each jar rectangle. (1) Stitch (2) Press (3) Trim The three center jars are sewn differently than the two outer jars. We will make them first. Select the Lime Happy Ladybugs, fussy-cut Navy Happy Bugs, and Orange Ladybugs (cut from the Multi Happy Stripe) rectangles. Sew a 1 ½" x 6 ½" White Jacks rectangle to the long sides of each jar rectangle. Press seams toward the White Jacks. For jar lid units, sew a 1 ½" x 3 ½" Yellow Dots, Blue Happy Daisies, and Green Dots rectangle to a 1 ½" x 3 ½" White Jacks rectangle. Press seams toward the jar lid fabric. Sew a 2 ½" x 2 ½" Jacks White squares to each side of the lid unit and press seams toward the squares. Sew the lid unit to the jar unit, pressing seams toward the lids. These blocks should measure 7 ½" x 8 ½". To make the two outer jars, use the remaining dragonfly and butterfly rectangles. Sew 1 ½" x 6 ½" White Jacks rectangles to the right side of the dragonfly and the left side of the butterfly. Sew a 2 ½" x 6 ½" White Jacks rectangle to the remaining sides of the bug rectangles. For the lid unit, sew a 1 ½" x 3 ½" Purple Dots and Red Jacks rectangle to a 1 ½" x 3 ½" White Jacks rectangle. Press seams toward the lids. Sew a 2 ½" x 2 ½" White Jacks square to the right side of the Purple Dots lid unit. Sew a similar square to the left side of the Red Jacks lid unit. Press seams toward the squares. Add a 2 ½" x 3 ½" rectangle to the opposite sides of the lid unit. Press seams toward the lids. Stitch the lid units to the jar units. Press seams toward the lid units. Stitch the five blocks together as shown to make a row measuring 8 ½" x 36 ½". Press all seams in one direction.

5 Page 5 of 11 Row 2 - Whirling Wings For the first three blocks of this row, cut the two 3 7 8" squares of Yellow Dandelions, Multi Happy Stripe, and Lime Happy Ladybugs in half diagonally to make four large triangles. For the fourth block, you will use the four fussy-cut 3 7 8" squares (cut on point) of Navy Happy Bugs. Make (2) Cut fussy-cut bug squares in half diagonally as shown. Lay out pieces so that parts of bugs are in the correct orientation in the block sections. Discard unused large triangles, marked with an X. For the smaller triangles, cut the 4 ¼" squares of Green Happy Daisies, Purple Dots, Red Jacks, and Yellow Dots in half diagonally twice. For the four - 4 ¼" Blue Happy Daisies background squares, cut each in half diagonally twice, to make four triangles each. You will have a total of 16 triangles. Make (16) triangles Stitch short sides of a small print triangle with a Blue Happy Daisies triangle and press seams toward the background triangle as shown. Make four of these units per block. Make (4) for each block Stitch the long side of the large triangle to the long side of the small triangle units. Press seams toward the large triangle. Make four of these units per block. Make (4) Following the diagram, lay out the four pieced sections and stitch together to make a block. Press seams toward the pieced triangles. Following quilt illustration on page one, make four Whirling Wings blocks to measure 6 ½" square.

Cut two - 9 ¾" Happy Daisies Blue squares diagonally twice to make eight setting triangles.

Stitch rows diagonally as shown and press seams toward the Blue Happy Daisies setting triangles.

Trim top and bottom edges ¼" from top and bottom points to measure 9" wide.

Row 4 - Checkerbug Squares Lay out the four 3 ½" squares cut from each of the Yellow, Purple,

Cut two - 9 ¾" Happy Daisies Blue squares diagonally twice to make eight setting triangles. Discard two triangles. Lay out blocks on point with corner and side setting triangles. Stitch rows diagonally as shown and press seams toward the Blue Happy Daisies setting triangles. Stitch rows together, matching points of blocks carefully. Press seams to one side. Trim top and bottom edges ¼" from top and bottom points to measure 9" wide. Add a 1 ½" x 9" spacer strip to each end. Trim length of row to 36 ½". The row should measure 9" x 36 ½". Row 3 - Ladybug Stripe Set this strip aside until the center rows are assembled. Row 4 - Checkerbug Squares Lay out the four 3 ½" squares cut from each of the Yellow, Purple, and Green Dots fabrics and alternate with the 12-3 ½" fussy-cut bug squares following the diagram to make a four-patch layout. Stitch squares together in pairs, pressing the seams toward the bugs. Hint: Sometimes the bias edges of the fussy-cut squares may tend to stretch, so I prefer to stitch with the bug on the bottom whenever possible to help ease in any extra fabric. Following the illustration on page one, stitch all pairs together to make a 6 ½" x 36 ½" strip, pressing seams toward the right.

To make half-square triangles, mark a diagonal line with a ruler on the WRONG side of 12-4" Red

Pair each marked Red Jacks square with the 4" Yellow, Green, and Purple Dots, Orange Ladybugs

Stitch ¼" on both sides of the marked lines.

Trim each half square triangle to measure 3 ½" square.

7 Page 7 of 11 Row 5 - Shoo Bugs! This row consists of six 6 ½" traditional Shoo Fly blocks with fussy-cut center squares. To make half-square triangles, mark a diagonal line with a ruler on the WRONG side of 12-4" Red Jacks squares. Pair each marked Red Jacks square with the 4" Yellow, Green, and Purple Dots, Orange Ladybugs (cut from the Multi Happy Stripe), White Jacks, Green and Blue Happy Daisies. Stitch ¼" on both sides of the marked lines. Cut apart on line and press seams toward the Red Jacks background triangles. Trim each half square triangle to measure 3 ½" square. Using the 3 ½" squares of Red Jacks and six center squares, lay out the blocks as shown. Stitch rows together, pressing top and bottom seams toward the background and the center row away from the center square. Stitch the three rows of blocks together to make a 6 ½" x 6 ½" block. Press all seams in one direction. Make six blocks. Stitch blocks together in a row, pressing seams toward the right. Row should measure 6 ½" x 36 ½". Center Panel Pin the 2 ¼" x 36 ½" Yellow Dots sashing strip to the bottom of Row 1 Bug Jars matching centers and ends. Stitch and press seams toward the sashing strip. Pin and stitch Row 2 Whirling Wings and Things to Row 3 Ladybug Stripe. Hint: When stitching Row 3 to Row 2, pin and stitch the rows with the stripe on top. Use an open toe foot to sew along the top of the green flower stripe. Use this same technique when adding Row 4, Checkerbug Squares, to the bottom of Row 3 to see the edge of the printed design better. Press seams toward Row 3. Pin and stitch Row 4, Checkerbug Squares, to the 2 ¼" x 36 ½" Blue Happy Daisies sashing strip. Press seams toward the sashing strip. Stitch the pairs of rows together following the quilt diagram, adding Row 5, Shoo Bugs! Press all seams toward the strips that contain less piecing to reduce bulk. The center panel of the quilt should measure 36 ½" x 40 ½".

Cut the two remaining 1 ½" x WOF Green Dots strips to the width of the quilt center plus side inner borders. Stitch to top and bottom and quilt center. Press seams toward inner border. Your quilt top should measure approximately 38 ½" x 42 ½". Outer Border: Cut two of the 5 ½" x WOF Navy Happy Bugs strips to the length of the quilt. Stitch to right and left sides, pressing seams toward outer border.

Page 9 of 11 Cornerstones Bugged-out Bowties: This is a simple four patch block with a little bugged out center to make a cute dimensional bow tie block.

9 Page 9 of 11 Cornerstones Bugged-out Bowties: This is a simple four patch block with a little bugged out center to make a cute dimensional bow tie block. For each Cornerstone block, you will need two - 3" Navy Happy Bugs background squares and three 3" bow-tie squares. Select two of the eight fussy-cut 2 ½" squares from the Happy Bugs background. The bow tie and knot are made from three - 3" squares from four prints Red Jacks, Yellow Dandelions, and Blue and Green Happy Daisies. Fold Red Jacks knot piece (3" x 3" square) in half with wrong sides together and finger press fold. As you lay out the block, your fold should be at the bottom with the raw edges at the top. It will measure 1 ½" x 3". Lay out the rest of the pieces of the block in a four-patch arrangement, as shown. Fold Place the folded knot piece on a Navy Happy Bugs background square with the long raw edges matching the top edge of the block. Don't sew yet! Place wrong side of Red Jacks square on top of layered block with sides and corners matching. Pin along the left side of the block, enclosing the folded piece and stitch. Fold both squares back with wrong sides together and the folded knot rectangle projecting to the right. Lay out a Red Jacks square under the knot and match top and right side raw edges. Place the Navy Happy Bugs background square with right sides together and edges aligned on top of the bowtie/knot unit and pin right edges together. Sew through all four layers. Open up and press seams toward the background square. Now comes the challenging part: creating the dimensional knot. Put your finger in the pocket formed by the folded square. Open it and bring the center seams together. The block formed will have contrasting squares in opposite corners. Pin the raw edges together matching the corners and opposing seam allowances at the center. At the center, you will be sewing through four layers of fabric. Begin at the left side of the block; align all raw edges, including the short edges of the folded knot and stitch until you reach the center. Stop with the machine s needle down in the fabric and adjust the remaining raw edges and corners so the block is smooth, pin, and complete the stitching. Your block will measure 5 ½" square. Press seams toward the background squares and voila! you will have a Bugged-out Bowtie block! Make three more using the other fabric combinations for the other corners.

Matching corners, pin edges together and stitch borders to the top and bottom of quilt top as shown. Press seams toward the inner borders. Your quilt should measure approximately 48 ½" x 53".

Fuse appliqués to quilt top where desired; stitch raw edges with monofilament or decorative threads. You may add satin stitching for legs and antennae, if desired.

Lay one section aside and cut the remaining 42" x 66" section into a 19" x 56 ¼" section. The remaining 23" x 56 ¼" section will not be used.

Fuse web to the wrong side of the fabric following manufacturer s instructions. Cut out bug. This quilt has 15 appliqués: 3 butterflies; 2 large dragonflies; 1 small dragonfly with yellow wings; 1 praying mantis; 1 bumble bee; 1 large Daddy ladybug (from Navy Happy Bugs), 1 medium Mommy ladybug (from Lime Happy Ladybugs), and 3 small Baby ladybugs (from Happy Stripe) for a total of 5 ladybugs; 1 red-winged bug; and 1 blue-winged bug. Fuse appliqués to quilt top where desired; stitch raw edges with monofilament or decorative threads. You may add satin stitching for legs and antennae, if desired. Finishing Backing Remove selvages from the edges of backing yardage. Cut the 3 ¹ 8 yard piece of White Jacks in half to make two 56 ¼" x 42" sections. Lay one section aside and cut the remaining 42" x 66" section into a 19" x 56 ¼" section. The remaining 23" x 56 ¼" section will not be used. Pin the two sections together along the 56" side and stitch with ½" seams. Press seam open. Backing should measure approximately 56" x 60" Layering Quilt, Basting, and Quilting Press quilt top and backing well. Layer White Jacks backing (WRONG side up) with the two sewn seams running horizontally, batting, and pieced top (RIGHT side up) on flat, firm surface. Baste using your preferred method. Quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with edges of quilted top. Take care to keep edges straight and corners at right (90 ) angles. Making Double-Fold Straight Grain Binding and Binding Quilt Stitch the short ends of 2 ½" x WOF Navy Happy Bugs binding strips together diagonally, trimming seams to ¼" and pressing open, to make one continuous length. Fold under a ¼" on one short end and press the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Leaving a 5" tail on the folded end of the binding, pin right side of binding to the quilt top, aligning raw edges. Sew the binding to the quilt, mitering corners as binding is applied. When approaching the unsewn tail of the binding, trim remaining binding so that it will be enclosed in the beginning of the binding. Pin and complete sewing. Turn folded edge to the back of the quilt and stitch down, covering the previous stitching line. Sew prepared label to bottom back corner and add a hanging sleeve to the back of the top edge Studio e Fabrics
