Our Motto: All The News That Fits... Gets Printed July 2018 Volume 31, Number 7 Next Meeting: Thursday, July 26th, 2018 Meeting Start: 6:30 PM Handley-Meadowbrook Lions Club 6013 Craig Street Fort Worth, TX Inside This Issue This Month s Program 1 Calendar 3 Making Good Shavings 4 Goblet with Interlocking Rings by Ken Rodgers I am from Lubbock but have lived in Richardson for the last 42 years. I started turning in 91 and joined WNT almost immediately. This was in the Ft Worth Paxton Wood store days. Clay Foster and Larry Roberts were my main go to guys when I had questions. A few years later, in the 1 st Mike Wallace shop days, we got our first camcorder, eventually spelling the doom for the 45-degree giant mirror (YEA)! I immediately got involved in the video operations. That effort migrated to the yearly meetings of the Texas Turn or Two (now SWAT). For several years I was the A/V manager for SWAT. 1
In 96 a few of us started the Dallas club and for several years I was active in both WNT and DAW. I have done demos at all four area clubs and SWAT. You can see samples of my turnings in my gallery on the DAW Website: My other hobbies include Ham Radio and flying R/C model planes. My real airplane flying days are ancient history. I also enjoy golf (some days), building solid body electric steel guitars (one was turned between centers on my lathe), playing guitars and fiddles, and videoing airshows. Search YouTube krodg41 for samples of my airshow videos at Addison and Alliance airports. I enjoy turning natural-edge goblets from odd-shaped tree limbs, saving them from the landfill. John Horn challenged me to learn how to add interlaced loose rings to my goblets. That is what I will be demonstrating for WNT in July. I will cover the goblet turning basics but will focus mainly on the interlaced loose ring aspect. The Woodturners of North Texas newsletter is published monthly. Inputs are due to the editor by the tenth of each month for inclusion in that month s newsletter. WNT gives permission to all other AAW woodturning chapters, woodworking magazines, and newspapers to use any text material and accompanying photos or drawings contained herein for the benefit of woodturners everywhere. We ask that credit be given to the source of the material. WNT logos and graphics may not be copied without permission. Copyright 2018, Woodturners of North Texas WNT WEB SITE: 2

... making Good Shavings President's Pen for July 2018 Sense of duty prevailed and I have suffered through the heat to get shop projects completed. Even though I am not a morning person, I have been getting up early (early for me means about 9am). That got me to thinking about priorities and how those priorities change as we age. The biggest recent change for me has been the change from working to retirement and a change in health. I think I have adapted well but free will raises its head far too often (aka I don t wanna). It s too hot/cold/early/late/time for lunch/fav TV show, etc. Life s major priorities should not change but things can happen that create new responsibilities (empty nest, change of health, empty nest fills back up). How you deal with these changes may require at least some effort or change of thinking. Routines help. Get up at a certain time followed by a predictable schedule and prepare and follow check lists help (my favorite). Make time to get something done (one of those small projects on your to-do list.) My wife calls it piddling around in the shop. That activity may give you energy to get more done. Try it. It works. SWAT 2018: Not too late to sign up. Probably too late to get a good rate on a room, but you can come down for the day. Looks like a great line up. 4
It is still hot out there. Get out in the shop and make something for yourself, your wife, the WNTX challenge, Tarrant Area Food Bank Empty Bowl, or just to make chips. But don t get too hot. Use fans, etc. to keep cool. See you on the 26 th. Keep turning and stay safe! Bill Collins President 5

Who s up for a Challenge? Our Challenge in June was to turn something Americana. We had a wide range of projects from baseball bats to a whiskey barrel. Three of our turners came up with the iconic Coca Cola bottle. As usual, a wide range of imagination was displayed. It is always fun to see what will turn up each month! Thanks to all who participated in the Americana project. Those contributors were: Jim Barkelew Mitch Jones Mike Barton Dick Koch Tom Beatty Mara Linehan David Carter Jerry Newton Don Christiansen Larry Sweeney David Colley Jim Tanksley Jimmy Fife Pam Thompson Rick Gauthier Mary Verwers Rick Hallabough Kerry Weeks Caressa Hess Bob Wiggins Blake Hickerson Joe Wagner Ron Howe Danny Woods Bruce Imsande Kelly Wooton James Haynes Don York The Challenge for July is to turn a Beads of Courage container. The parameters are posted online at the Beads of Courage website. You may also contact Ron Howe or Ray Moyer for more information. These boxes will be carried to SWAT for display and then brought back to be distributed to children in our DFW area hospitals. I hope to see y all on Thursday Pam Thompson 16

Last Month s Critique Each month we encourage members to bring turnings for constructive criticism. We all learn from this type of critique and hopefully our skills will improve because of it. With our time being limited, only 3 items are chosen each month for critique. All of our members are encouraged to take a hands on look at the Critique table before the meeting begins and ask questions. This month we had items for critique from: 1. Aaron Levy - mesquite bowl with a lacquer finish 2. Bill Boehme - maple wedding basket 3. Dick Koch - walnut 3 cornered bowl with lid 23
Beads of Courage is going well. We have 12 turners signed up so far but our Monthly Challenge will give us more. Good turning to you and see you at the July meeting. If you have any completed lidded bowls bring them to the meeting. Your B of C bowls will go to Waco to display and will be brought back ready for when the hospitals need them. If your lidded box is not completed no problem as the hospital needs them all year round. Check these sites out on the Internet: 1. On Facebook search for Peach Sate Woodturners lots of lidded bowls 2. On (YouTube) search for Denton Turners Staved Boxes part 1 and 2 another way to make lidded bowls On Facebook search for Beads of Courage this site will want to motivate you to participate See you in July. If you have any questions you can talk to Ron Howe or Ray Moyer. Good turning 24
Empty Bowls is an annual one-day fund raising event for the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The Food Bank provides food to sister agencies in 13 surrounding counties. The sister agencies then provide the food to needy children and families. Patrons at the Empty Bowls event pay $65 or more and get to choose a bowl (wood, ceramic or glass) to take home and sample food from numerous booths of local restaurants. There are also numerous corporate sponsors that provide a sizeable portion of the total donations. The March 2018 event raised $249,000, which is slightly more than last year. The next Empty Bowls event will be May 1, We set a new record last month but not the good kind. Joe Wigner brought in one bowl and Bill Holt donated 8 coffee scoops. I appreciate those donations but I think that is the smallest number we have ever had for one month. We have a total of 62 turned items but have a long way to go to our goal of 300. The hot days are here to stay for a while so get out in your shop early before it gets too hot and make a bowl to help feed the hungry people. If you have any questions or comments, let me, Ron Traylor, know at randkbiz@msn.com. 25
