1 Golden Triangle Woodturners Club Denton Texas THE WOODTURNER Graeme Priddle Graeme Priddle has over 20 years experience in the woodworking field, best known for his sculptural turnings/carvings reflecting his life and environments in Northland, New Zealand. He has won numerous awards for his work, which has been exhibited widely in New Zealand, UK, Japan, Taiwan, France, Germany, U.S.A and Canada. He is very active in the wood turning world and commits his time and talent to many creative endeavors. He has served on the committee of the New Zealand National Association of Woodturners for five years as well as being instrumental in establishing the New Zealand CollaboratioNZ Conferences in Graeme has demonstrated and taught for numerous woodworking and woodturning groups and at many woodworking events throughout the world. Graeme was born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand in He moved to Northland in 1986 while working for Telecom as a radio technician. He took voluntary severance in 1989 after twelve years service and started woodturning in He now lives and works on a 100 acre bush block 30km North-East of Whangarei.

2 President s Platter Sam Slovak The spring rains and storms have added to my inventory of wood to be turned much to the dismay of my wife who had been building a longer list of projects of her own. Once again I must prioritize wisely. We have submitted the photographs and list of turned art to the Greater Denton Arts Council for the upcoming display of your individual works of art to be displayed at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts during June and July of this year. Sixty three items from nineteen members are to be entered in the exhibit Woodturning: Traditional to Modern. Those of you who submitted pieces please deliver the turning to Caroline Holly at the Art Center on June 8th. Tell your family and friends to visit this free exhibit during it's showing. Associated with the showing Golden Triangle Woodturners, led by our own Neal Brand, will conduct a paid workshop for the general public so they may enjoy learning how to make turned wooden tops. He plans one or two classes from 9:00 to 11:30 and if there is a lot of interest we could do a second one from 12:30 to 3:30. The cost $25 and a maximum of 6 people per class. All the proceeds will go to the Arts Council. There is an opportunity for several members to support Neal providing individual assistance to each of the class members. Continued on next page 2

3 President s Platter Cont. Sam Slovak This class provides an introduction to wood turning. Each student will be provided with a lathe and tools to use for the class as well as wood blanks. However, if students have their own turning tools, then they can bring them to use. By the end of the class, students will have learned the basics of turning and they will take home spin tops they turned. Tragedy struck Peter Tkacs in the form of a lightning bolt directly onto his wood shop with disastrous results. However, we can learn from Peter's misfortune and his wisdom in making a photographic inventory of his tools and shop contents prior to the storm. Thus making his discussion with his insurance provider much less stressful. Lastly we are rapidly approaching SWAT, so be sure to register and make your room accommodations. And those gifted turners who want so share your work with a member of the greater woodturning community, SWAT is requesting donations for this years 2 for 1 drawing in Waco. If you are interested in providing a donated piece of turned art, please let me know and we will place you in contact with the appropriate folks at SWAT. Turn Safely and Enjoy 3

5 A Reminder about our upcoming Exhibition. Woodturning: Traditional to Modern 2015 This summer, GTW is offering a woodturning exhibition at the Visual Arts Center thru the Greater Denton Arts Council. The Date is June 12 thru July 24. As the title Woodturning: Traditional to Modern implies, turnings of any kind will be presented and displayed. The turnings will be from simple traditional items such as bowls to modern turnings that incorporate surface enhancements such as color, carvings, and pyrography. Please come and support our members and enjoy some time in viewing art in woodturning. Bring family and friends. This is an exhibit that you will not want to miss. Registered exhibitionist: Remember to drop off your items for show on June 8 at the Visual Arts Center by 5. 5

10 SWAT 2015 Register before August 1st and save 20-25% over the onsite registration. Registration is now open for SWAT 2015 with two convenient ways to register, either online or by mail. We have tried to make it as easy as possible for you to register this year, online using Pay Pal or with the old snail mail. Either way gets you in the door for the second biggest Turning Symposium in the world. Our goal is to give you the best demonstrators, vendors, Instant Art Gallery and learning experience for your buck, and still include lunch every day in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Where else could you find: 54 turning classes (Rotations as we call them) electronically delivered Handbook great lunch the biggest Instant Art Gallery of all the symposiums Special Interest Groups (SIG) more (Tool, Art and Wood) door prizes 3 lathe give away over 45 vendors in 80+ booths along with Internationally known turners such as Jimmy Clewes (Wood World of TX), Stewart Batty (Woodworkers Emporium), Molly Winton (Wood World of TX) demonstrating in the vendor area all for $140 We have also added the sale of Door Prize Tickets (Formerly Raffle Tickets) to our registration forms to make it easy for you to order more tickets ahead of time. You will be able to pick them up at the Registration Window and add them to the bin when you arrive. We will also have people roaming the floor selling tickets all during SWAT and at the Banquet. Because of State regulations on non-profit organizations holding raffles we have reclassified these as door prizes. This year we will not be printing the Demonstrator Handbook. Instead we will be delivering it by to everyone around August 1st to give you the chance to: 1. Look through and decide what Rotations you would like to attend. 2. Print out a portion or the entire Handbook to take with you to the Symposium. 3. Transfer it to your laptop, tablet or phone to take with you. 4. Formulate and write down any questions you have for the demonstrator a head of time. This also allows for printing and viewing in color, something we have previously been unable to afford. You can also bind it the way you prefer, spiral, 3 ring binder, staple etc. For those who do not have an we will have printed copies at registration. We will also have a few for sale at the window for $3 while they last. Early registration ends August 1st after which you will need to register onsite for a 20-25% higher registration fee. 10

Go through and get all of those great demonstrations highlighted so you won t miss the ones you really want to see. Things like: Sphereology, Digital Photography for the Woodturner, Surface Enhancement, Design and Turn Delicate Wooden Ornament, Segmented Sculpture, just to name a few of the 54 Rotations scheduled for this year. Don t forget our great lineup of Special Interest Groups (SIG s) either and to help you make it on time we will be having an Italian Dinner night 6-7:30, Caesar Salad, Lasagna, Chicken Spaghetti, Italian Veggies, Garlic Rolls, Dessert and Tea. It is being setup by Joe Blanek this year so it is sure to be good. Tickets for this great dinner are on sale on the website for $12. Tickets need to be purchased in advance for this dinner so we have the correct number of servings to get ready.
