General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and Division 01 Specification Sections: (06200)-Page 1 of 11
2 1. Submit Product Data and Shop Drawings indicating component profiles and fastening and joining details. 2. Samples for initial selection of the following in the form of manufacturer's color charts consisting of actual units or sections of units showing the full range of colors, textures, and patterns available for each type of material indicated. a. Include data for fire-retardant treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated materials comply with requirements. 3. Samples for verification of the following: a. Lumber products with factory-applied finish, 50 sq. in. for lumber for each finish system and color. b. Linear Moldings: 2-foot-long section with finished joint. Show complete pattern. c. Nonlinear Shapes: Full-size unit. 4. Shop Drawings: Show profiles, thicknesses, finishes, joints, ornamentation, installation tolerances, and anchorage details. Indicate attachment methods, embedded supports, reinforcement, fabrication methods, joint treatments, clearances, and supports. a. Show connection to suspension system and cutouts for sprinklers, diffusers, grilles, speakers, and lighting fixtures. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Factory-mark each piece of lumber and plywood with type, grade, mill, and grading agency identification; except omit marking from surfaces to receive transparent finish, and submit mill certificate that material has been inspected and graded in accordance with requirements if it cannot be marked on a concealed surface. B. Perform finish carpentry work in accordance with AWI Quality Standards, Custom Grade. C. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide glass-reinforced gypsum fabrications with the following surface-burning characteristics as determined by testing identical products per ASTM E84 by UL or another independent testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction: 1. Flame Spread: 25 or less. 2. Smoke Developed: 450 or less. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect finish carpentry materials during transit, delivery, storage, and handling to prevent damage, soiling, and deterioration. B. Do not deliver finish carpentry materials, until painting, wet work, grinding, and similar operations which could damage, soil, or deteriorate woodwork have been completed in installation areas. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, finish carpentry materials must be stored in other than installation areas, store only in areas meeting requirements specified for installation areas. 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Conditioning: Installer shall advise Contractor of temperature and humidity requirements for finish carpentry installation areas (06200)-Page 2 of 11
3 B. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install interior finish carpentry until building is enclosed and weatherproof, wet-work in space is completed and nominally dry, and HVAC system is operating and will maintain temperature and relative humidity at occupancy levels throughout the remainder of construction period. 1. Maintain temperature and humidity in installation area as required to maintain moisture content of installed finish carpentry within a 1.0 percent tolerance of optimum moisture content, from date of installation through remainder of construction period. The fabricator of woodwork shall determine optimum moisture content and required temperature and humidity. C. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installing exterior finish carpentry only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed according to manufacturer's recommendations and warranty requirements and at least one coat of specified finish to be applied without exposure to rain, snow, or dampness. D. Field Measurements: Where glass-reinforced gypsum fabrications are indicated to fit to other construction, verify dimensions of other construction by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS, GENERAL A. Lumber Standards: Comply with DOC PS 20, "American Softwood Lumber Standard," and with applicable grading rules of inspection agencies certified by ALSC's Board of Review. B. Inspection Agencies: Inspection agencies, and the abbreviations used to reference them, include the following: 1. Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NeLMA) 2. National Lumber Grades Authority (Canadian) (NLGA) 3. Redwood Inspection Service (RIS) 4. Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) 5. West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) 6. Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) C. Grade Stamps: Provide lumber with each piece factory marked with grade stamp of inspection agency evidencing compliance with grading rule requirements and identifying grading agency, grade, species, moisture content at time of surfacing, and mill. 1. For exposed lumber, furnish pieces with grade stamps applied to ends or back of each piece, or omit grade stamps entirely and provide certificates of grade compliance issued by inspection agency. D. Softwood Plywood: Comply with DOC PS 1, "U.S. Product Standard for Construction and Industrial Plywood." E. Hardwood Plywood: Comply with ANSI/HPVA HP-1, "Interim Voluntary Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood." (06200)-Page 3 of 11
4 2.2 INTERIOR STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM A. Hardwood Lumber: Grading in accordance with AWI; maximum moisture content of 15 percent. 1. Stained Interior Wood Trim and Millwork: Species as shown below, solid lumber stock, sizes and shapes shown on Drawings, of straight grain type sufficient to receive stained finish, smooth surfaced. a. Maximum Moisture Content: 10 percent. b. Finger Jointing: Not allowed c. Red Oak, Grade 1 2. Painted Interior Wood Trim and Millwork: Species as shown below, solid lumber stock, sizes and shapes shown on Drawings, of grain type sufficient to receive painted finish, smooth surfaced. a. Poplar, Paint Grade b. Maximum Moisture Content: 15 percent. c. Finger Jointing: Not allowed B. Nominal sizes are indicated, except as shown by detailed dimensions. Provide dressed or worked and dressed lumber, as applicable, manufactured to the actual sizes as required by PS 20 or to actual sizes and patterns as shown, unless otherwise indicated. 2.3 INTERIOR WOOD STAIRS A. Treads: Structural Flooring, ¾-inch thickness as required to accept finish flooring B. Risers: Structural Flooring, ¾-inch thickness as required to accept finish flooring C. Stringers: 2 x 12 inch nominal size solid lumber, refer to Drawings. Notch to receive treads, risers and supports. Provide at least 3 stringers for each 36 inches of clear width of stair. D. Railings: Aluminum handrails, refer to Drawings. 2.4 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Fasteners and Anchorages: Provide nails, screws, and other anchoring devices of the type, size, material, and finish required for application indicated to provide secure attachment, concealed where possible, and complying with applicable Federal Specifications. Provide in sufficient length to penetrate minimum of 1-1/2 inches into substrate, unless otherwise recommended by manufacturer. 1. Where finish carpentry is exposed on exterior or in areas of high relative humidity, provide fasteners and anchorages with a hot-dipped zinc coating complying with ASTM A153, or stainless steel. 2. For redwood, provide stainless-steel fasteners. 2.5 FABRICATION WOOD A. Wood Moisture Content: Comply with requirements of specified inspection agencies and manufacturer's recommendations for moisture content of finish carpentry on relative humidity conditions existing during time of fabrication and in installation areas (06200)-Page 4 of 11
5 B. Fabricate finish carpentry to dimensions, profiles, and details indicated. 1. Back out or kerf backs of the following members, except members with ends exposed in finished work: a. Interior standing and running trim, except shoe mold and crown mold. 2. Ease edges of lumber less than 1 inch in nominal thickness to 1-1/6 inch radius. 2.6 SHEET MATERIALS A. Shelving: 3/4" thick by width shown on Drawings, Hardwood Plywood; custom grade in accordance with AWI; core material of veneer; type of bond recommended for application; with minimum 3/4" x 1-1/4" hardwood nosing. B. Softwood Plywood: DOC PS 1, Medium Density Overlay. 2.7 FIRE RETARDANT TREATED (FRT) LUMBER A. Approved Manufacturers: 1. Lumber: a. "Dricon FRT"; Archwood Protection Inc. ( ) b. "Pyro-Guard ; Hoover Treated Wood Products, Inc. ( , ext. 211) c. "FirePRO FR Lumber"; Osmose Wood Preserving, Inc. ( ) 2. Plywood: a. "Exterior Fire-X"; Hoover Treated Wood Products, Inc. ( , ext. 211) B. Comply with performance requirements in AWPA C20, Exterior type. Kiln dry after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. C. Flamespread and smoke developed ratings of 25 or less by ASTM E84, with no sign of progressive combustion when test is extended to 30 minutes. D. Materials: 1. All materials shall come from the factory pre-primed. 2. Type: Non-combustible fiber cement, exterior grade trim board complying with ASTM C1186, Grade I Type A fiber cement sheet. No asbestos fibers shall be contained in products. 3. Flame Spread Index of 0 and Smoke Generation Number of 0 in accordance with ASTM E Fasteners:. a. All materials shall come from the factory pre-primed. 2. Type: Non-combustible fiber cement, exterior grade siding and soffit board complying with ASTM C1186, Grade I, Type A. No asbestos fibers shall be contained in products. 3. Flame Spread Index of 0 and Smoke Generation Number of 0 in accordance with ASTM E Flexural strength per ASTM C1185: 1850 length direction; 2500 transverse direction of sheet. 5. Thermal resistance: Minimum R-values of 0.15 for Siding materials and for Soffit materials. C. Trim: Provide lineal trim, corner inserts, square and cove type; other trim pieces necessary to complete installation. D. Accessories: 1. Fasteners: a. Wood Framing: Corrosion resistant, shank head siding nails, size as recommended by manufacturer of siding. 2. Sealants or Caulking Compounds: Refer to Section Only use products as approved by composition siding manufacturer. 3. Cement patch: Macklanburg-Duncan Co., Oklahoma City, OK ( ) Acrylic Mortar Patch, or as approved by manufacturer of composition siding. E. Schedule of Components - Composition Siding & Soffits 1. Tamlyn & Sons ( ) 2. Materials: a. White PVC, sized for soffit thickness PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerance and other conditions affecting installation and performance of finish carpentry. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. B. Do not install materials that are wet, moisture or mold damaged. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of projections and substances detrimental to application (06200)-Page 7 of 11
8 B. Condition finish carpentry to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas before installation, for a minimum of 24 hours unless longer conditioning is recommended by manufacturer. C. Prime and backprime lumber for painted finish exposed on the exterior not indicated as factory prefinished. Comply with requirements for surface preparation and application in Section Painting. D. Ensure that all electrical or other services are in place. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. Discard units of material which are unsound, warped, bowed, twisted improperly treated, not adequately seasoned or too small to fabricate work with minimum of joints or optimum jointing arrangements. Do not use manufactured units with defective surfaces, sizes, or patterns. B. Install the work plumb, level, true, and straight with no distortions. Shim as required using concealed shims. Install to a tolerance of 1/8" in 8'-0" for plumb and level countertops; and with 1/16" maximum offset in flush adjoining 1/8" maximum offsets in revealed adjoining surfaces. C. Scribe and cut work to fit adjoining work, and refinish cut surfaces or repair damaged finish at cuts. D. Countersink nails, fill surface flush, and sand where face nailing is unavoidable. E. Install to tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches for plumb and level. Install adjoining finish carpentry with 1/32 inch maximum offset for flush installation and 1/16 inch maximum offset for reveal installation. F. Coordinate finish carpentry with materials and systems in or adjacent to standing and running trim and rails. Provide cutouts for mechanical and electrical items that penetrate exposed surfaces of trim and rails. G. Finish according to specified requirements. H. Anchor finish carpentry work to anchorage devices or blocking built-in or directly attached to substrates. Secure to grounds, stripping and blocking with countersunk, concealed fasteners and blind nailing as required for a complete installation. Except where prefinished matching fastener heads are required, use fine finishing nails for exposed nailings, countersunk and filled flush with finished surface, and matching final finish where transparent is indicated. 3.4 WOOD STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION A. Install with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of lumber available. Do not use pieces less than 24 inches long, except where necessary. Stagger joints in adjacent and related standing and running trim. Cope at returns and miter at corners to produce tight-fitting joints with full-surface contact throughout length of joint. Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints. Plane backs of casings to provide uniform thickness across joints, if required. 1. Match color and grain pattern across joints for transparent finish locations. 2. Install trim after gypsum board joint finishing operations are completed (06200)-Page 8 of 11
9 3. Drill pilot holes in hardwood before fastening to prevent spitting. Fasten to prevent movement or warping. Countersink fastener heads on exposed carpentry work and fill holes. B. ERECTION AND LOCATION TOLERANCES 1. Erection Tolerances: Install glass-reinforced gypsum fabrications so each unit complies with the following dimensional requirements: a. Plane Alignment (Panel to Panel): 1/16 inch. b. Variation from Plumb: Plus or minus 1/8 inch per 10 feet. c. Variation from Straightness: Plus or minus 1/4 inch per 25 feet. d. Assembly Deflection: Not greater than the length of the assembly divided by 240. e. Joint Alignment: Not more than 1/8 inch. f. Joint Width: Not more than 3/8 inch. 3.5 COMPOSITION STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION A. Install in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. B. Install with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of composition trim available. C. Fasten through trim into building structure D. Fasten maximum of 12 on center, stagger fasteners across trim width. E. Target fastener setback no closer than 1 inches from edges and ends of trim and no further than 2 inches from edges of trim. F. Fasteners shall be flush, do not overdrive. Protect over-driven fasteners from the weather and compliment with a second fastener, properly installed. G. Maintain clearance between trim and adjacent finished grade. H. Where 7/16 trim is used over composition siding, provide shims as required to five the trim a flat bearing surface. I. Overlay siding with trim molding at windows, doors and inside corners as indicated on the drawings. Fasten through overlapping boards. Do not nail between lap joints. J. Overlay siding with single board of outside corner board then align second corner board to outside edge of first corner board. Fasten boards to building structure. Do not fasten trim board to trim board. K. Shim frieze boards as required to align with corner trim in locations as indicated on drawings. L. Install trim fascia over structural sub-fascia in locations indicated on drawings. M. Seal all end cuts with masonry compatible sealer. 3.6 COMPOSITION SIDING INSTALLATION A. Air Infiltration Barrier Installation: 1. One layer of air infiltration barrier shall be installed horizontally on walls. Weatherlap edges and ends minimum 6" (06200)-Page 9 of 11
10 2. Stagger vertical joints. 3. At openings such as windows, refer to Section for flashing installation. B. Installation of Siding: 1. Install siding and accessories in accordance with manufacturer's directions. 2. Install siding level and plumb. Install for natural shed of water. Position cut ends over bearing surfaces. Sand cut edges smooth and clean. Maintain clearance between siding materials and adjacent finished grade as recommended by manufacturer. 3. Fasten through siding and/or trim into structural framing. Fasteners must penetrate a minimum of ¾. Place fasteners as recommended by siding manufacturer. 4. Provide for expansion and contraction of siding at location of installation. Do not drive nail heads tight against nailing lock. Size nails in accordance with manufacturer's printed literature. 5. Install flashings as indicated on Drawings and as recommended by siding manufacturer at all wall openings. 6. Joints or laps shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's printed instructions. Stagger end joints by at least two courses. Locate splices at least one stud away from door or window openings, minimum of Plan all butt joints between two planks to fall on building structure (studs.) Butt joints between planks shall be caulked or back-flashed to divert water onto the lower course of siding. Always fasten from one end to the other, not from both ends toward the middle. 8. Locate splices at lest one stud cavity away from window and door openings. 9. Hold siding 1/4" away from floors, soffits, doors, windows, and louver frames for sealant application. See Provide sealants at all locations recommended by manufacturer and provide sealant as approved by manufacturer of siding. C. Installation of Continuous Soffit Vent: 1. Install in accordance with soffit and vent manufacturer s recommendations. 2. Use corrosion resistant nails of sufficient length to penetrate wood blocking or studs a minimum of 1-inch. D. Finishing of Siding and Soffits: 1. Use only paints recommended directly by siding manufacturer. Do not use oil-based stains. 2. Siding will be factory primed. Provide finish coats immediately after application of siding to building, but in no case exceeding 90 days. 3. The use of acrylic latex-based caulking compounds is required. 3.7 INTERIOR WOOD STAIR INSTALLATION A. Treads and Risers: 1. Glue and nail treads and risers to supporting stringers (06200)-Page 10 of 11
11 B. Provide maximum of 3/16-inch variation between adjacent treads and risers and a maximum of 3/8-inch variation between largest and smallest treads and risers within each flight of stairs. 3.8 ADJUSTMENT, CLEANING, FINISHING, AND PROTECTION A. Repair damaged and defective finish carpentry work wherever possible to eliminate defects functionally and visually; where not possible to repair properly, replace woodwork. Adjust joinery for uniform appearance. B. Clean finish carpentry work on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch-up factory-applied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas. C. Preparation for Finishing: Sand work smooth and set all nails and screws. Apply wood filler in exposed nail and screw indentations. D. Cleaning: Keep premises in a neat, safe, and orderly condition at all times during execution of this portion of the work, free from the accumulation of sawdust, cut-ends, and debris. E. Refer to Division 09 Sections for final finishing of installed finish carpentry work. F. Protection: Installer of finish carpentry work shall advise Contractor of final protection and maintained conditions necessary to ensure that work will be without damage or deterioration at time of acceptance.
