Product Data: Provide data indicating material characteristics, dimensions of individual components, profiles, textures, and colors. 2. Samples for initial selection in form of manufacturer s sample finishes showing the full range of colors textures and profiles available for each type of asphalt shingle indicated. 3. Samples for verification: Submit two (2) full size samples of each type of shingle color indicating full range and finish texture/pattern/color variations expected in these characteristics. 4. Contract Closeout Submittals: Submit Warranty in accordance with Section QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Perform Work in accordance with the recommendations of NRCA Steep Roofing Manual. B. Products Required to Comply with Fire Resistance Criteria: UL listed and labeled. 1. Fire Rating Requirement: UL Class A. Where products with a fire-test-response classification are specified, provide asphalt shingles identical to those tested according to ASTM E 108 or UL 790 and listed by UL or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify each bundle of asphalt shingles with appropriate markings indicating fire-test-response classification of applicable testing and inspecting agency. ASPHALT SHINGLES

2 2. Wind Resistance Requirement: UL Class A. Where wind-resistant asphalt shingles are indicated, provide products identical to those tested according to ASTM D 3161 or UL 997 and passed. Identify each bundle of asphalt shingles with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS A. Attic Ventilation: Provide ridge and other roof vents to provide cross ventilation for each separate attic space with following minimum net free ventilating areas in accordance with following requirements: 1. Net free ventilating area shall be not less than 1/150 of the area of the space ventilated, with 50 percent of the required ventilating area provided by ventilators located minimum 3 feet above eave or cornice vents. 2. Net free ventilating area shall be reduced to 1/300 of the ventilated are when a vapor retarder is installed on the warm side of the attic insulation. Vapor retarder to conform to ASTM E Notify Architect of any attic spaces which do not comply with above requirements. 4. Coordinate attic ventilation with other ventilation specified in Section DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. General: Comply with Section B. Deliver materials to Project site in manufacturer s unopened bundles or containers with labels intact. C. Handle and store materials at Project site to prevent water damage, staining, or other physical damage. Store roll goods on end. Comply with manufacturer s recommendations for job-site storage, handling, and protection ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A.. Proceed with installing asphalt shingles or eave protection membrane only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed according to manufacturers recommendations and warranty requirements, and when substrate is completely dry WARRANTY A. Warranties: 1. General Warranty: The special warranty specified in this Article shall not deprive the Owner of other rights the Owner may have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and shall be in addition to, and run concurrent with, other warranties made by the Contractor under requirements of the Contract Documents. 2. Special Warranty: Submit a written warranty signed by manufacturer agreeing to repair or replace asphalt shingles that fail in materials or workmanship within the specified warranty period. Failures include, but are not limited to, deformation or deterioration of asphalt shingles beyond normal weathering. a. Warranty Period: Manufacturer s standard but not less than 25 years after date of Substantial Completion EXTRA MATERIALS A. See Section Product Requirements, for additional provisions. 1. Provide Owner with replacement shingles in amount of 1 percent of shingles used in each color and texture. ASPHALT SHINGLES

3 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 SHINGLES A. Manufacturers: 1. Certainteed. Product: Landmark 2. GAF. Product: Timberline 4. GAF. Product: Marquis WeatherMax 5. Substitutions: See Section Product Requirements. B. Asphalt Shingles at Buildings: Square tab, strip asphalt-coated glass felt, mineral granule surfaced, self-sealing, 3-tab, complying with ASTM D 3462; Class A fire resistance. 1. Weight: 240 lb/100 sq ft. 2. Size: 12x36 inches 3. Color: As selected by Owner SHEET MATERIALS A. Rubberized Protection Membrane: Rubberized asphalt sheet bonded to sheet polyethylene, 40 mil (1 mm) total thickness, self-adhering, with strippable treated release paper; Vycor Ice and Water Shield as manufactured by W.R. Grace. Comply with ASTM D1970. Provide primer when recommended by underlayment manufacturer. 1. Vycor Ice and Water Shield, as manufactured by W.R. Grace. B. Underlayment: Asphalt-saturated organic felt underlayment, complying with ASTM D 4869, Type I, 36 inch wide ACCESSORIES A. Ridge Vent: High-density polypropylene, non-woven modified polyester, or other UV-stabilized plastic designed to be installed under asphalt shingles at ridge. B. Roof Vent: Sheet metal gravity vent. Use where shed roof condition does not allow ridge vent application C. Asphalt Plastic Cement: Non-asbestos fibrated asphalt cement, complying with ASTM D D. Roll-Roofing Lap Cement: Non-asbestos asphalt lap cement, complying with ASTM D 3019, Type III. E. Nails: Standard round wire shingle type, of hot-dipped zinc coated steel, 12 gauge, inch barbed shank diameter, 3/8 inch head diameter, of sufficient length to penetrate through roof sheathing at least 1/8 inch, or 3/4 inch into roof sheathing or decking METAL FLASHINGS A. Metal Flashings: Provide sheet metal eave edge, gable edge, ridge vents, low-profile roof vents, and other flashing indicated. Where metal flashings are to come into contact with pressure treated lumber, substitute membrane or compatible sheetmetal flashing material. B. Sheet Metal Materials 1. Aluminum Sheets: ASTM B 209 alloy 3003H14 with mill finish, minimum thick, unless otherwise indicated. 2. Metal Drip Edge: Brake-formed aluminum sheet with at least a 2 roof deck flange and a 1-½ fascia flange with a 3/8 drip at lower edge. Furnish in lengths of 8 or 10 feet. 3. Metal Flashing: Job-cut to sizes and configurations required. a. Material: Aluminum sheets ASPHALT SHINGLES

4 C. Vent Pipe Flashing: Standard flashing collars with flanges to fit both shingle type roof and membrane type roof installations. Provide collar sizes and types to fit various pipe sizes shown on drawings. Ensure all sleeves are watertight and recommended for use in specific installations. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Verify existing conditions prior to beginning work. 1. Verify that deck is securely anchored and of sufficient thickness to accept fasteners. 2. Verify that roof penetrations and plumbing stacks are in place and flashed to deck surface. 3. Verify roof openings are correctly framed. 5. Verify deck surfaces are dry, free of ridges, warps, or voids. B. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of projections and substances detrimental to application. Cover knotholes or other minor voids in substrate with sheet metal flashing secured with non-corrosive roofing nails. B. Seal roof deck joints wider than 1/16 inch with deck tape. C. Broom clean deck surfaces before installing underlayment or eave protection. D. Coordinate installation with flashing and other adjoining work to ensure proper sequencing. Do not install roofing materials until all vent stacks and other penetrations through roof sheathing have been installed and are securely fastened against movement. E. Install eave edge flashings tight with fascia boards. Weather lap joints 2 inches and seal with plastic cement. Secure flange with nails spaced as recommended by manufacturer INSTALLATION - RUBBERIZED PROTECTION MEMBRANE A. Install rubberized protection membrane per manufacturer s installation guidelines and directions and per local code requirements. In lieu of clear installation directions, use the following method. From eave edge to minimum 4 ft up-slope beyond interior face of exterior wall and at full length of all gable edges and wall/roof intersections. 1. Valleys: Install rubberized protection membrane minimum 5 ft wide, centered in valleys from eave line to ridge line. 2. Weather lap joints minimum 4 inches. 3. Apply 4 inch wide band of plastic cement over deck flange of eave edge flashings, and embed an 18 inch wide strip of eave protection membrane. Place starter strip with eave edge flush with face of flashings. Secure in place. Lap ends minimum 6 inches. 4. Apply lap cement at rate of approximately 1 1/4 gal/100 sq ft over starter strip. 5. Starting from lower edge of starter strip, lay additional 36 inch wide strips in lap cement, to produce a two ply membrane. Weather lap plies minimum 19 inches and nail in place. Lap ends minimum 6 inches. Stagger end joints of each consecutive ply. 6. Install 3 above eave lines, 18 in either direction at a roof elevation change and 18 up side walls. 7. Woven and Closed-Cut Valleys: Comply with ARMA and NRCA recommendations INSTALLATION - UNDERLAYMENT ASPHALT SHINGLES

5 A. Felt Underlayment: Apply one (1) layer of felt underlayment horizontally over entire surface to receive asphalt shingles, lapping succeeding courses a minimum of 2, end laps a minimum of 4, and hips and valleys a minimum of 6. Fasten felt with sufficient number of roofing nails or noncorrosive staples to hold underlayment in place until asphalt shingle installation. B. Items projecting through or mounted on roof: Weather lap and seal watertight with plastic cement INSTALLATION - SHINGLES A. General: Comply with manufacturer s instructions and recommendations but not less than those recommended by ARMA s Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual or The NRCA Steep Roofing Manual. Install shingles in accordance with Reference Standards and manufacturer's instructions. Use vertical and horizontal chalk lines to ensure straight coursing. Cut and fit asphalt shingles at valleys, ridges, and edges to provide maximum weather protection. Provide same weather exposure at ridges as specified for roof. Lap asphalt shingles at ridges to shed water away from direction of prevailing wind. Use fasteners at ridges of sufficient length to penetrate sheathing as specified. Pattern: 1/3 shingle spacing offset at succeeding courses. 1. Fasten individual shingles using 2 nails per shingle, or as required by code, whichever is greater. 2. Fasten strip shingles using 4 nails per strip, or as required by code, whichever is greater. 3. Place shingles in straight coursing pattern with 5 inch weather exposure to produce double thickness over full roof area. Provide double course of shingles at eaves. 4. Project first course of shingles 3/4 inch beyond fascia boards. 5. Extend shingles 1/2 inch beyond face of gable edge fascia boards. 6. Each Course: Center joints between joints of preceding course. 7. Staples: Not allowed. 8. Exposed Nails: Permissible only in top courses where unavoidable. Cover exposed nail heads with elastic cement spread thickly over exposed surface of undercourses of shingles, nailed securely in place and pointed with elastic cement. 9. Fit shingles tightly and neatly around any pipes, ventilators, etc. 10. Shingles Overlapping Sheet Metal Work or Flexible Flashing: Place nails to avoid puncturing flashing wherever possible. 11. Shingle roof valleys in accordance with shingle manufacturer s installation instructions. Closed-cut valleys are preferred. 12. Cap hips with individual shingles, maintaining 5 inch weather exposure. Place to avoid exposed nails. B. Build in place and place flashing pieces furnished under Section and cooperate in doing work of flashing. C. Coordinate installation of roof mounted components or work projecting through roof with weather tight placement of counterflashings. D. Install ridge vents rigidly, securely, and water tight, complete with accessories including connectors and end plugs, and securing with fasteners of type, size and spacing in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 1. Ensure correct amount of opening has been provided. 2. Secure through sheathing into framing members. E. Complete installation to provide weather tight service PROTECTION A. Do not permit traffic over finished roof surface. ASPHALT SHINGLES

6 3.07 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Testing: See Section Inspection and Testing Agency: Perform duties in such way that installation is not unnecessarily delayed or impeded. Agency will not recommend or prescribe method of repair of defect. 2. Field Inspection: Include examination of asphalt shingle roofing installation as deemed necessary by Owner to ascertain compliance with Construction Documents. B. Adjustments: Replace any damaged materials installed under this Section with new materials that meet specified requirements. END OF SECTION ASPHALT SHINGLES
