1 SECTION ROUGH CARPENTRY 1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK: A. Definition: Rough carpentry includes carpent~y work not specified as part of other sections and which is generally not exposed, except as otherwise indicated. Types of work in this section include rough carpentry for: 1. Wood framing. 2. Wood grounds, nailers and blocking. 3. Subflooring. 1.2 SUBMITTALS: A. Wood Treatment Data: Submit chemical treatment manufacturer's instructions for handling, storing, installatioil and finishing of treated material. I. Preservative Treatment: For each type specified, include certification by treating plant stating type of preservative solution and pressure process used, net amount of preservative retained and coilforinance with applicable standards. 2. For water-borne Treatment include statement that moisture content of treated materials was reduced to levels indicated prior to shipment to project site. 1.3 PRODUCT HANDLING: A. Delivery and Storage: Keep material under cover and dry. Protect against exposure to weather and contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber as well as plywood and other panels; provide for air circulation within and around stacks and under temporary coverings including polyethylene and similar material. 1. For lumber and plywood pressure treated with waterborne chemicals, sticker between each course to provide air circulation. 1.4 PROJECT CONDITIONS: A. Coordination: Fit carpently work to other work; scribe and cope as required for accurate fit. Correlate location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds and similar supports to allow attachment of other work. 2. PRODUCTS 2.1 LUMBER, GENEML: A. Lumber Standards: Manufacture lumber to comply with PS 20 "American Softwood Lumber Standard" and with applicable grading rules of inspection agencies certified by American Lumber Standards Committee's (ALSC) Board of Review. Grade Stamps: Factory-mark each piece of lumber with grade stamp of inspection agency evidencing compliance with grading rule requirements and identifying grading agency, grade, species, moisture content at time of surfacing and mill. 1. For exposed lumber, apply grade stamps to ends or back of each piece, or omit grade stamps entirely and issue certificate of grade compliance from inspection agency in lieu of grade stamp. C. Noininal sizes are indicated, except as shown by detail dimensions. Provide actual sizes as required by PS 20, for moisture content specified for each use. 1. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated. 2. Provide lumber with 15% maximum moisture content at time of dressing and shipment for sizes 2" or less in nominal thickness, unless otherwise indicated. 2.2 DIMENSION LUMBER: A. For light framing, provide "Stud" or "Standard" grade lumber for stud framing (2" to 4" thick, 2" to 2" wide, 10' and shorter) and "Standard" grade for other light framing (2" to 4" thick, 2" to 4" wide), any species. 2.3 BOARDS: A. Concealed Boards: Where boards will be concealed by other work, provide lumber of 19% maximum moisture content (S-DRY). 2.4 MISCELLANEOUS LUMBER: A. Provide wood for support or attachment of other work including cant strips, bucks, nailers, blocking, furring, grounds, stripping and similar members. Provide lumber of sizes indicated, worked into shapes shown, and as follows: 1. Moisture Content: 19% maximum for lumber items not specified to receive wood preservative treatment. B. Grade: Standard Grade light framing size lumber of any species or board size lumber as required. No. 3 Common or Standard grade boards per WCLIB or WWPA rules or No. 3 boards per SPIB rules. 2.5 CONSTRUCTION PANELS: A. Construction Panel Standards: Comply with PS 1 "U.S. Product Standard for Construction and Industrial Plywood" for plywood panels and, for products not manufactured under PS 1 provisions, with American Plywood Association (APA) "Performance Standard and Policies for Structural-Use Panels", Form No. E445. B. Trademark: Factory-mark each construction panel with APA trademark evidencing compliance with grade requirements. C. Plywood Underlayment for Flooring: For underlaytnent for indicated thickness, provide plywood panels with fully sanded face. (ST. JAMES.Oll.3) ROUGH CARPENTRY

3 2.4 MISCELLANEOUS NLATERIALS: A. Fasteners and Anchorages: Provide size, type, material and finish as indicated and as recommended by applicable standards, complying with applicable Federal Specifications for nails, staples, screws, bolts, nuts, washers and anchoring devices. Provide metal hangers and framing anchors of the size and type recornmended by the inanufacturer for each use including recommended nails. 1. Where rough carpentry work is exposed to weather, in ground contact, or in area of high relative humidity, provide fasteners and anchorages with a hot-dip zinc coating (ASTM A 153). 3. EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL: A. Discard units of material with defects which might impair quality of work, and units which are too small to use in fabricating work with minimum joints or optimum joint arrangement. B. Set carpentry work to required levels and lines, with members plumb and true to line and cut and fitted. C. Securely attach carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as shown and as required by recognized standards. Countersink nail heads on exposed carpentry work and fill holes. D. Use common wire nails, except as otherwise indicated. Use finishing nails for finish work. Select fasteners of size that will not penetrate members where opposite side will be exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections between members. Install fasteners without splitting of wood; predrill as required. 3.2 WOOD GROUNDS, NAILERS, BLOCKING AND SLEEPERS: A. Provide wherever shown and where required for screeding or attachment of other work. Forin to shapes as shown and cut as required for true line and level of work to be attached. Coordinate location with other work involved. B. Attach to substrates as required to support applied loading. Countersink bolts and nuts flush with surfaces, unless otherwise indicated. Build into masonry during installation of masonry work. Where possible, anchor to formwork before concrete placement. C. Provide permanent grounds of dressed, preservative treated, key-bevelled lumber not less than 1 112" wide and of thickness required to bring face of ground to exact thickness of finish material involved. Remove temporary grounds when no longer required. 3.3 WOOD FURRING: A. Install plumb and level with closure strips at edges and openings. Shim with wood as required for tolerance of finished work. 4 3.4 WOOD FIbAMING, GENERAL: A. Provide framing members of sizes and on spacings shown, and frame openings as shown, or if not shown, comply with recommendations of "Manual for House Framing" of National Forest Products Association (N.F.P.A.). Do not splice structural members between suppotts. B. Allchor and nail as shown, and to comply with "Recommended Nailing Schedule" of "Manual for House Framing" and "National Design Specifications for Wood Construction" published by N.F.P.A. 3.5 FLOOR JOIST FRAMING: A. General: Provide framing of sizes and spacing shown. Install with crown edge up and support ends of each member with not less than 1 112" of bearing on wood or metal, or 3" on masonry. Attach to wood bearing members by toe nailing or metal connectors; frame to wood supporting members with wood ledgers as shown, or if not shown, with metal connectors. Fire-cut members built into masonly (if any). Frame openings with headers and trimmers supported by metal joist hangers; double headers and trimmers where span of header exceeds 4'. Do not notch in middle third of joists; limit notches to 116- depth of joist, 113 at ends. Do not bore holes larger than 113-depth of joist or locate closer than 2" from top or bottom. Provide solid blocking (2" thick by depth of joist) at ends of joists unless nailed to header or brand member. B. Lap members framing from opposite side of beams, girders or partitions not less than 4" or securely tie opposing members together. Provide solid bloclting (2" thick by depth of joist) over s11pp01ts. C. Anchor members paralleling masonry with 114" x 1 114" metal strap anchors spaced not more than 8' O.C. Extend anchors at least 4" into masonly, turn up 4" and extend over and fasten to 3 joists. D. Under jamb studs at openings, provide solid blocking between joist. E. Under non-load-bearing partitions, provide double joists separated by solid blocking equal to depth of studs above. 1. Provide triple-joists separated as above, under paltitions receiving ceramic tile and similar heavy finishes or fixtures, unless otherwise indicated. F. Provide bridging between joists where nominal depth-to-thickness ratio exceeds 4, at intervals of 8'. Use bevel cut 1" x 4" or 2'' x 3" wood bracing, double-crossed and nailed both ends to joists, or use solid wood bridging 2" thick by depth of joist, end nailed to joist. 3.6 RAFTER AND CEILING JOIST FUMING: A. Ceiling Joists: Provide member size and spacing shown, and as previously specified for floor joist framing. Face nail to ends of parallel rafters. 1. Where principal ceiling joists are at right angles to rafters, frame as indicated with additional shoit joists from wall plate to first joist; nail to ends of rafters and to top plate and nail to long joists or anchor with fsaming anchors or metal straps. Provide 1 x 8 or 2 x 4 stringers spaced 4' O.C. crosswise over principal ceiling joists. B. Rafters: Provide member size and spacing shown. Notch to fit exterior wall plates and toe nail or use special metal framing anchors. Double rafters to form headers and trimmers at openings in roof (ST. JAMES.0113) ROUGH CARPENTRY

5 framing (if any), and support with metal hangers. Where rafters abut at ridge, place directly opposite each other and nail to ridge member or use metal ridge hangers. 1. At valleys, provide valley rafter of size shown, or if not shown, provide rafter twice as thick as regular rafters and 2" deeper. Bevel ends of jack rafters for full bearing against valley rafter. 2. At hips, provide hip rafters of size shown, or if not shown, provide of same thicltness as regular rafters and 2" deeper. Bevel ends of jack rafters for full bearing against hip rafters. C. Provide collar beams (ties) as shown, or if not shown, provide 1" x 6" boards between every third pair of rafters. Locate below ridge member, one-third of distance to ceiling joists. Cut ends to fit slope and nail to rafters. D. Provide special framing as shown for eaves, overhangs, dormers and similar conditions, if any. 3.7 BOARD SUBFLOORING: A. Install boards with end joints staggered over supports, and with each piece extending over at least 2 spaces between supports. Nail with 8 d common nails, spaced 2 per support for board widths or 6" and less, 3 per support for widths of 8" and more. END OF SECTION (ST. JAMES.0113) ROUGH CARPENTRY
