3 ESSENTIAL NOTES PRYDA PRODUCT GUIDES INTRODUCTION The information in this Product Guide is provided for use in Australia by architects, engineers, building designers, builders and others. It is based upon the following criteria: 1. No Substitution: The products covered by or recommended in this guide must not be substituted with other products. 2. Design Capacity Basis: See Codes & Standards following 3. Supporting Constructions: Constructions using Pryda products must be built in accordance with the BCA or an appropriate Australian standard. Note: This includes appropriate corrosion protection- See Corrosion Protection following 4. Correct Installation: Installation of Pryda products must be strictly in accordance with the instructions in this guide 5. Current Guide Version Used: The current version of this guide, including any amendments or additions, must be used. Users are advised to check with Pryda for updates at least every three months by telephone, the web site: or by to: CODES & STANDARDS Product design capacities in this guide have been derived from: (a) results of laboratory tests carried out by or for Pryda Australia (b) engineering computations in accordance with the relevant Australian standards, ie: * AS Timber Structures. Part 1: Design Methods * AS/NZS1170 series : 2002 Structural Design Actions * AS Wind Loads for Housing Design capacities tabulated in this guide apply directly for Category 1 joints. For all other joints, reduce design capacities by using the factors as specified in General Notes (if applicable). Design capacities are related to the Joint Group of the timber as defined in AS1720 and AS1684. If the joint group of timber members joined together varies, the lower group must be assumed for design, eg: JD5 is lower than JD4. DEFINITIONS Special terms used in this guide are as defined in Australian standards, including: Design Capacity: the maximum Limit State Design load (aka action ) which the product can safely support under the specified load condition, eg: 1.2G + 1.5Q (dead+roof live). See General Notes for details (if applicable) Joint Group: classification of a timber according to its fastenerholding capacity. See General Notes for details (if applicable) CORROSION PROTECTION Most Pryda products are manufactured using Z275 light-gauge steel, having zinc coating of 275 gsm (total weight). This protection is adequate only for INTERNAL applications in most corrosion environments, except areas that are classified as heavy industrial or those subject to high humidity (eg: enclosed swimming pools) etc. Under these circumstances, seek advice from experts as special protection will be required. Note: INTERNAL areas are those within the building envelope that are kept permanently dry. AS and AS Australian Standards for Residential Timber Frame Construction stipulates a minimum Z275 steel for all sheet metal products used in an internal environment. In areas outside the building envelope that are exposed to repeated wetting (EXTERNAL areas), Pryda s stainless steel products or equivalent should be considered. Some alternatives include hot dip galvanised or powder coated steel, which are not supplied by Pryda. For more detailed information, read Pryda s Technical Update on Corrosion Resistance of Pryda Products or contact a Pryda office. PRODUCT CERTIFICATION Pryda Australia warrants: * Products in this guide are free from defects in the material or manufacturing * Design capacities are in accordance with test results or current, relevant Australian standards and the Building Code of Australia. * Pryda products are structurally adequate provided they are designed, installed and used completely in accordance with this guide. This warranty applies only to: * products in this guide * products used in the specified applications and not damaged after manufacture and supply * joints free from wood splitting, decay or other timber defects within the joint or within 150 mm of the joint. INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION These notes are provided to ensure proper installation. 1. All fasteners used must be manufactured by reputable companies and be of structural quality. 2. Connectors must not be installed on timber which is split before or during installation. If the timber is likely to split as fasteners are driven, fastener holes must be pre-drilled. 3. Do not overload the joints- during construction or in service. 4. Bolt hole diameter must be 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm larger than the bolt diameter and the specified washers must be installed. 5. Use proper safety equipment and due care in installing these connectors 6. Any gaps in joints between the timber members must not exceed 3 mm 7. Do not over-tighten screws. 5 PRYDA TIMBER CONNECTORS Pryda Lintels Guide Copyright: Pryda Australia - A Division of ITW Australia ABN March 2012 PRYDA LINTELS Features Pryda Lintels are laboratory tested, engineered steel lintels for use in domestic and other types of buildings. Preferred by many builders, Pryda Lintels: are light to handle and easy to install. One worker can readily lift and fix them into place. reduce the weight of the frame which makes it easier to transport and to stand up on-site. This also reduces the likelihood of on site injury. do not creep, ie: they do not deflect more as time goes by - as timber does, avoiding cornice cracking and expensive rectification often can be shallower than timber lintels - and therefore fit into limited head depth. are economically competitive with other lintels. are not at risk of being attacked by termites are easily identifiable to inspectors with colour stickers identifying size, including thickness are supported by engineering software that can print a full set of engineering computations and producer statements can be used to reinforce an existing undersized lintel, for spans up to 3400 mm, by installing the Pryda Lintel over the timber lintel. allow easy replacement or movement of lintel position by simply unscrewing on site in the event of an error. Product Details Pryda Lintels are available in L sections to the dimensional details tabulated below. Steel is Galvabond G450-Z275 or equivalent. Product Codes (such as PL130/16/08) are made up as follows: PL - Pryda Lintel Depth (mm) Thickness (mm) without decimal point eg: 16 = 1.6 Length (m) without decimal point eg: 08 = 0.8 m Lip Depth Supply of Pryda Lintels is per item (ie: per beam). Design & Size Selection To determine the appropriate depth and thickness of Pryda Lintel for a particular window opening, use the Pryda Lintel range in the Pryda Lintel software programs.the lintel must be long enough to at least cover the jamb studs. Dimensions Available sizes and dimensions of Pryda Lintel are tabulated below. Product Depth Thick Lip Lengths Code (mm) (mm) (mm) (mm) PL130/ ,1100,1400,1700, 2000 PL160/ ,1700, 2000 PL160/ PL180/ , 2300, 2600 PL200/ , 2000, 2300, 2600 PL220/ , 2900 PL240/ , 2900,3200,3500 PL240/ , 3500 Installation Wall Frame Construction For fixing of the bottom edge of the Pryda Lintel, a 90x45 mm (90 mm frames) or 90x35 mm (70 mm frames) trimmer is to be well fitted between and fixed to the jamb studs with 4@ 90x3.05 mm machine driven glue coated or deformed shank nails or 4@ 100x3.33 mm hand driven nails- as shown below. 90x45 mm or 90 x35 mm jacks are also required at 600 mm maximum spacing on the inner face for support of the internal lining and window trimmer. To install Pryda Lintels: 1. Fitting to Frame: Fit the Pryda Lintel tightly against the top plate. If double top plates are used, the Pryda Lintel may be fixed between plates or over both. Face Fixing: One screw at each jamb stud and at 300 mm crs. between- through lintel into top plate Top plate Top Fixing: One screw each end through lip and at max. 400 mm between Jamb stud Jamb stud Bottom Bottom fixing Fixing: of Pryda fastener Lintel: centres are required by - design Little or depending no uplift: Screws on net at uplift. 300 mm Fasteners are generally centres into required trimmer at or 150 jamb c/c studs in High Wind areas - and With 300 uplift: c/c Screws in other at areas. 150 mm centres Pryda Lintel Installation Details Optionally, where the end of the Pryda Lintel extends beyond the jamb studs, a double 90x45 mm trimmer can be installed between the jamb and common studs to protect workers. On Site Installation There are significant benefits to on-site handling of wallframes where Steel Lintels are used. They are lighter and the risk of call backs due to deflection is reduced. They do, however, require some additional techniques to be used in some cases, especially when fixing sheet bracing or cement sheeting. 2. Top Lip Fixing: Install the Pryda Lintel over the top plate and then fix it with fasteners at each jamb stud. In addition, fasteners may be fixed at maximum 300 mm spacing along the top of plate. This is optional and especially required to straighten top plates when they are bowed or uneven. 3. Top Face Fixing: Fix to both jamb studs and at max. 300 mm centres along the vertical face onto the top plate. Additional fasteners at jamb studs may be required to tie-down lintel (from design) Fixing of sheet bracing to Pryda Lintel Plywood or any other sheet brace can be fixed through the Pryda Lintel and into the wall frame using WTF12-35 Type 17 screws through pre-bored holes. One screw to replace every two nails in the overlap area (see figure below) 4. Bottom Fixing: The bottom edge must be fastened to the trimmer as described in the diagram above: Lip Fixing: One nail or screw each end through lip, and at max. 300 c/c if required to straighten top plate Fixing of Sheet Brace through Pryda Lintel Note: 32x2.3 mm Duo-Fast C SHEG (ie: screw hardened electro galvanized) machine driven nails (code D40800) may be used as an alternative when fixing into lintels of thickness less than 2mm. In this case, use 20% more nails than specified. PRYDA LINTELS GUIDE MARCH
7 PRYDA TIMBER CONNECTORS Pryda Lintels Guide Copyright: Pryda Australia - A Division of ITW Australia ABN March 2012 On Site Installation (cont ) Fixing of cement sheeting over openings Dealing with steel lintels in a typical timber framed construction can be an inconvenience to some builders. Fixing of cement sheets over openings in the presence of a Pryda Lintel is one such example. The detail shown below is designed to alleviate this and allows builders on site to easily accommodate cement sheets over openings. Fixing of truss tie-down connectors and anchoring roof bracing As illustrated below, truss tie-down connectors like multigrips or cyclone straps can be easily fixed to the internal edge of the wall top plate. Using metal Teks screws, these connectors may be also fixed to the face of Pryda Lintel. Building Inspection Steel Lintels are inherently different to timber lintels. For a Building Inspector some items worthwhile noting are: Deflection Unlike Timber Lintels, Pryda Lintels experience a once-off deflection once installed, i.e. there is no further deflection. Pryda Lintels are easily identifiable. All lintels have labels adhered to them, detailing the specification of the lintel used. All labels are colour coded: - Red all 1.6mm lintels - Yellow all 2.0mm lintels - Purple all 3.0mm lintels Infill Detail for fixing of Cement Sheet over openings This allows the Building Inspector to confirm the lintel specifications using the attached span tables or output from Pryda software. This detail incorporates a 70x35 dropper(on flat) at 900 c/c, nail fixed to top plate and the head trimmer Cyclone Straps Multi grips Anchorage of Roof Bracing (Speedbrace). Metal Teks screws may be used to fix bracing directly to Pryda Lintel Examples of fixing Tie-down connectors and anchoring roof bracing with Pryda Lintel PRYDA LINTELS GUIDE MARCH
