1 SECTION WOOD ARCHITECTURAL CABINETS AND QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS PART 1- GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Architectural wood cabinets (kitchenette) 2. Quartz Countertops and Backsplashes. 3. Cabinet hardware. 4. Wood furring, blocking, shims, and hanging strips for installing architectural wood cabinets unless concealed within other construction before cabinet installation. 5. Shop finishing of architectural wood cabinets. 1.3 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS A. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. 1. Review methods and procedures related to wood architectural cabinets including, but not limited to, the following: a. Review delivery, storage, and handling procedures. b. Review ambient condition and ventilation procedures. c. Review Phasing Schedule for installation. 1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product. B. Shop Drawings: Show location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations, large-scale details, attachment devices, and other components. 1. Show details full size. 2. Show locations and sizes of furring, blocking, and hanging strips, including concealed blocking and reinforcement specified in other Sections. 3. Show locations and sizes of cutouts and holes for under-cabinet lighting, electrical switches and outlets installed in architectural wood cabinets. 4. Show full details of counters, including locations and sizes of cutouts and holes for plumbing fixtures, faucets and other items to be installed in the plastic-laminate countertop. C. Samples for Verification: 1. Submit full sized raised panel door, illustrating final cabinet stain color and finish. WOOD ARCHITECTURAL CABINETS AND QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS
2 August 19, Submit two 5 by 8 inch size samples, illustrating countertop material. 3. Submit two samples of drawer and door pulls and hinges illustrating hardware finish. 4. Submit Two 6 inch long samples, illustrating upper cabinets crown molding. 1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTAL A. Qualification Data for custom cabinet manufacturer. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom fabricate products similar to those required for this Project and whose products have a record of successful inservice performance. B. Installer Qualifications: Fabricator must have 10 years of experience and a certified participant in AWl's Quality Certification Program. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Do not deliver cabinets until painting and similar operations that could damage woodwork have been completed in installation areas. If cabinets must be stored in a location other than installation areas, store only in areas where environmental conditions comply with requirements specified in "Field Conditions" Article. 1.8 FIELD CONDITIONS A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install cabinets until buildings or storage location is maintaining temperature between 60 and 90 deg F (16 and 32 deg C) and relative humidity between 25 to 55 percent during the remainder of the construction period. B. Field Measurements: Where cabinets are indicated to fit to other construction, verify dimensions of other construction by field measurements before fabrication, and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. 1. Locate concealed framing, blocking, and reinforcements that support cabinets by field measurements before being enclosed, and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. C. Established Dimensions: Where cabinets are indicated to fit to other construction, establish dimensions for areas where cabinets are to fit. Provide allowance for trimming at site, and coordinate construction to ensure that actual dimensions correspond to established dimensions. 1.9 COORDINATION A. Coordinate sizes and locations of framing, blocking, furring, reinforcements, and other related units of Work specified in other Sections to ensure that solid wood architectural cabinets with solid wood raised panel doors can be supported and installed as indicated. 3 PART 2- PRODUCTS 2.1 ARCHITECTURAL CABINET FABRICATORS A. Source Limitations: Engage a qualified woodworking firm to assume undivided responsibility for production of architectural wood cabinets with stained finishes. B. Quality Standard: Unless otherwise indicated, comply with the "Architectural Woodwork Standards" for grades of architectural wood cabinets indicated for construction, finishes, installation, and other requirements. 2.2 WOOD CABINETS FOR TRANSPARENT STAINED FINISH A. Grade: Premium. B. Type of Construction: Face Frame. C. Face Style: Flush Overlay; Door and Drawer Faces Fully Cover Cabinet Fronts. D. Wood for Exposed Surfaces: American Walnut. 1. Select materials for compatible color and grain. Do not use two adjacent exposed surfaces that are noticeably dissimilar in color, grain, figure, or natural character markings. E. Grain Direction: Vertically for doors and fixed panels, horizontally for drawer fronts. F. Door and Drawer Fronts: Solid-wood stiles and rails, 3/4" thick, with 3/4" thick solid-wood center panels. G. Reveal Dimension: No reveal. H. Face Frames: 3/4" by 1 5/8" solid wood with glued mortise and tenon or doweled joints. I. Exposed Cabinet End Finish: No finished end panels required. J. Back, top and bottom rails: 3/4" by 2 %" solid wood, interlocking with end panels and rabbeted to receive top and bottom panels. Back rails secured under pressure with blue and mechanical fasteners. K. Wall Hung Back Panels: 3/16" thick plywood fastened to rear edge of end panels and to top and bottom rails. L. Base Unit Back Panels: 3/16" thick plywood fastened to rear edge of end panels and to top and bottom rails. M. Front Frame Drawer Rails: 3/4" by 1 1/4" solid wood mortised and fastened into face frame. N. Panel Product for Exposed Surfaces: Solid wood. 0. Semi-exposed Surfaces: Provide surface materials indicated below: 1. Surfaces Other Than Drawer Bodies: Match materials indicated for exposed surfaces. 4 2. Edges of Medium-density fiberboard finished with thermally fused, melamineimpregnated Shelves: PVC or polyester edge banding. 3. Drawer Sides and Backs: Solid-hardwood lumber. 4. Drawer Bottoms: Medium-density fiberboard finished with thermally fused, melamineimpregnated. P. Drawer Construction: Fabricate with exposed fronts fastened to subfront with mounting screws from interior of body. 1. Join sub-fronts, backs, and sides with glued dovetail joints. Q. Shop Finishing: Stain and finish cabinets in shop. Defer only fmal touchup until after installation. R. Stain Color: Dark Walnut to match trim in Senate Chamber. S. Polyurethane Finish: Shop-install 2 coats of finished satin polyurethane finish. 2.3 WOOD MATERIALS A. Wood Products: Provide materials that comply with requirements of referenced quality standard for each type of woodwork and quality grade specified unless otherwise indicated. 1. Do not use plain-sawn softwood lumber with exposed, flat surfaces. 2. Hardwood Moisture Content: kiln dried to 7 percent moisture content. 3. Do not use products that contain urea formaldehyde. 4. Do not use finger-jointed material. B. C. D. Exposed Wood Species: American Walnut. Solid Wood: Clear American Walnut, free of defects for frames, doors and drawers. Wood Crown Molding: Clear American Walnut. 2.4 CABINET HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES A. B. C. D. E. F. General: Provide cabinet hardware and accessory materials associated with architectural cabinets. Frameless Concealed Hinges (European Type): BHMA A 156.9, B01602, 100 degrees of opening, self-closing. Back-Mounted Pulls: BHMA A , B Adjustable Shelf Standards and Supports: BHMA A 156.9, B04071; with shelf rests, B Shelf Rests: BHMA A 156.9, B04013; two-pin type with shelf hold-down clip. Drawer Slides: BHMA A Grade 1 and Grade 2: Side mounted and extending under bottom edge of drawer; fullextension type; zinc-plated steel with polymer rollers. For drawers not more than 3 inches high and not more than 24 inches wide, provide Grade For drawers more than 3 inches high but not more than 6 inches high and not more than 24 inches wide, provide Grade 1. G. Door and Drawer Silencers: BHMA A , L H. Exposed Hardware and Finishes: For exposed hardware, provide finish that complies with BHMA A for BHMA finish number indicated. 1. Dark, Satin Bronze,: BHMA 613 for brass base; BHMA 640 for steel base: 2. Basis of Design, as manufactured by Amerock, or Equal. a. Knob: SKU# BP24234RB b. Pull: SKU# BP55422RB I. For concealed hardware, provide manufacturer's standard finish that complies with product class requirements in BHMA A QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS A. Configuration: Provide countertops with the following front and backsplash style: 1. Front: Straight, slightly eased at top. 2. Backsplash: Straight, slightly eased at corner. 3. Endsplash: Matching backsplash. B. Countertops: 3/4-inch. C. Backsplashes: 1/2-inch. D. Fabrication: Fabricate tops in one piece. Comply with quartz agglomerate manufacturer's written instructions for adhesives, sealers, fabrication, and finishing. 1. Fabricate with loose backsplashes for field assembly. E. Fabrication 1. Fabricate countertops to dimensions, profiles, and details indicated. Provide front and end overland of 1 inch over base cabinets. 2. Complete fabrication, including assembly, to maximum extent possible before shipment. Disassemble components only as necessary for shipment and installation. Where necessary for fitting at site, provide ample allowance for scribing, trimming and fitting. 3. Trial fit assemblies at fabrication shop that cannot be shipped completely assembled. Install dowels, screws, bolted connectors, and other fastening devices that can be removed after trial fitting. Verify that various parts fit as intended and check measurements of assemblies against field measurements before disassembling for shipment. F. Quartz Agglomerate: Solid sheets consisting of quartz aggregates bound together with a matrix of filled plastic resin and complying with the "Physical Characteristics of Materials" Article of ANSI SS1. 6 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following: a. Cambria. b. Cosentino USA. c. E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. d. Technistone USA, Inc. 2. Colors and Patterns: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range (including premium). 2.6 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Furring, Blocking, Shims, and Hanging Strips: Hardwood lumber, kiln dried to less than 15 percent moisture content. B. Anchors: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each substrate for secure anchorage. Provide metal expansion sleeves or expansion bolts for post-installed anchors. Use nonferrous-metal or hot-dip galvanized anchors and inserts at inside face of exterior walls and at floors. C. Adhesives: Adhesives shall not contain urea formaldehyde. 2.7 FABRICATION A. Fabricate woodwork to dimensions, profiles, and details indicated. Ease edges to radius indicated for the following: 1. Corners of Cabinets: 1/16 inch unless otherwise indicated. B. Complete fabrication, including assembly, finishing, and hardware application, to maximum extent possible before shipment to Project site. Disassemble components only as necessary for shipment and installation. Where necessary for fitting at site, provide ample allowance for scribing, trimming, and fitting. 1. Trial fit assemblies at fabrication shop that cannot be shipped completely assembled. Install dowels, screws, bolted connectors, and other fastening devices that can be removed after trial fitting. Verify that various parts fit as intended and check measurements of assemblies against field measurements before disassembling for shipment. C. Shop-cut openings to maximum extent possible to receive hardware, appliances, electrical work, and similar items. Locate openings accurately and use templates or roughing-in diagrams to produce accurately sized and shaped openings. Sand edges of cutouts to remove splinters and burrs. 2.8 SHOP FINISHING A. General: Finish architectural wood cabinets at fabrication shop as specified in this Section. Defer only final touchup, cleaning, and polishing until after installation. 7 B. General: Drawings indicate items that are required to be shop finished. Finish such items at fabrication shop as specified in this Section. C. Preparation for Finishing: Comply with referenced quality standard for sanding, filling countersunk fasteners, sealing concealed surfaces, and similar preparations for finishing architectural wood cabinets, as applicable to each unit of work. 1. Backpriming: Apply one coat of sealer or primer, compatible with finish coats, to concealed surfaces of cabinets. D. Transparent Finish: 1. Grade: Custom. 2. Finish: System - 12, water-based polyurethane. 3. Wash Coat for Closed-Grain Woods: Apply wash-coat sealer to cabinets made from closed-grain wood before staining and finishing. 4. Staining: Match millwork color in Senate Chamber. 5. Sheen: Satin, gloss units measured on 60-degree gloss meter per ASTM D 523. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Before installation, condition cabinets to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas. B. Before installing cabinets, examine shop-fabricated work for completion and complete work as required, including removal of packing and back priming. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. B. C. D. E. Grade: Install cabinets to comply with same grade as item to be installed. Assemble cabinets and complete fabrication at Project site to the extent that it was not completed in the shop. Install cabinets level, plumb, true, and straight. Shim as required with concealed shims. Install level and plumb to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches. Scribe and cut cabinets to fit adjoining work, refinish cut surfaces, and repair damaged finish at cuts. Anchor cabinets to anchors or blocking built in or directly attached to substrates. Secure with countersunk, concealed fasteners and blind nailing. Use fine finishing nails for exposed fastening, countersunk and filled flush with woodwork. 1. For shop finished items use filler matching finish of items being installed. F. Cabinets: Install without distortion so doors and drawers fit openings properly and are accurately aligned. Adjust hardware to center doors and drawers in openings and to provide unencumbered operation. Complete installation of hardware and accessory items as indicated. 8 1. Install cabinets with no more than 1/8 inch in 96-inch sag, bow, or other variation from a straight line. G. Touch up finishing work specified in this Section after installation of woodwork. Fill nail holes with matching filler where exposed. H. Counters: 1. Field Jointing is not permitted. 2. Install countertops level, plumb, true and straight. Shim as required with concealed shims. Install level and plumb to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches. 3. Scribe and cut countertops to fit adjoining work, refinish cut surfaces, and repair damaged finish at cuts. 4. Anchor securely by screwing through corner blocks of base cabinets or other supports into underside of countertop. Pre-drill holes for screws as recommended by manufacturer. 5. Install with no sag, bow or other variation from a straight line. 6. Secure backsplashes to walls with adhesive in color to match countertop. 7. Seal junctures of tops, splashes, and walls with mildew-resistant silicone sealant or another permanently elastic sealing compound recommended by countertop material manufacturer. 8. Carefully dress joints smooth, remove surface scratches, and clean entire surface. a. Install backsplashes and endsplashes to comply with manufacturer's written instructions for adhesives, sealers, fabrication, and finishing. 3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Repair damaged and defective cabinets, where possible, to eliminate functional and visual defects; where not possible to repair, replace woodwork. Adjust joinery for uniform appearance. B. Clean, lubricate, and adjust hardware. C. Clean cabinets and countertops on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch up shopapplied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas.
