Due to a number of existing and imposed constraints, One London Wall is one of the most complex city office buildings ever designed by Foster and Partners. The development is adjacent to the west wall of the Roman Fort, part of the London Wall and hence a scheduled ancient monument. The Post Office tunnel runs through the site and construction had to take place over the existing Plaisterer s Hall. It was a requirement for the height of the building to remain under the St. Paul s view cone, giving rise to a stepped section across a plan which is curved to follow the line of London Wall as it meets the corner with Aldersgate Street. The building is supported by a combination of new and re-used foundations and as a result of the need to preserve aspects of the existing structures, the lowest passenger lift lobby is at first floor. The transition from ground to first floor is achieved via escalators through a spectacular nine metre high entrance hall on London Wall. 4

The system is extremely flexible offering numerous bracket designs for wall mounted handrails and balustrade guarding options include in line or offset glass, perforated steel panels, intermediate rails or stainless steel tensioned wire ropes. Clean Lines icon is manufactured as a series of machined or cast fittings, mechanically connected together to create a highly engineered product with precise, clean lines between adjoining components. The system has a sharp, sophisticated appearance, unhindered by the presence of unsightly welds as can often be the case with fabricated alternatives. Concealed Fixings icon endorses positive detailing and with such emphasis placed on precision it is complimentary for fixing screws and bolt heads to be discretely concealed wherever possible. End caps, cover discs and rosettes feature in the design of all key components to provide a tidy and tamper proof solution, particularly appropriate for public and educational building applications. Superior Finish Stainless steel icon is supplied with a radially polished brushed satin finish and the aluminium version, which already benefits from an inherently superior surface to that of mild steel, is further enhanced by the application of a unique NyMet coating system. Natural hardwood handrails are polished and lacquered. More information on the range and specification of icon finishes can be found on page 36. Technical Performance icon has been developed in accordance with the design criteria specified in BS 6180:1999 and side loading requirements for all buildinguse categories can be accommodated including the 3 kn/m horizontal UDL designated for areas susceptible to overcrowding. Internal and external specifications are available for the NyMet finished aluminium system including the Stainless Steel range which is supplied in 304 and 316 grade variants. Curved rails can be considered and special adaptations of the system are often incorporated to suit the individual needs or preferences of each project. 36 Finishes icon can be tailored to suit the requirements of any interior design concept with options ranging from sophisticated corporate steel finishes through to inviting natural hardwoods for retail or even residential environments. Whatever the nature of the scheme icon has a finish, design and specification capable of making a tangible contribution towards the successful execution of the project. As tactile elements of buildings directly influence the occupiers perception of their surroundings, it is essential to attain a quality finish for high profile fixtures such as handrails. NyMet Coating The aluminium version of icon is factory finished in a unique NyMet nylon coating. NyMet comprises a three coat system of electrostatically applied Polymer offering a 150 micron finish which has twice the thickness and 10 times the resistance to abrasion of a typical polyester powder coating. NyMet possess flexible properties which prevent the coating from chipping and flaking, weathering resistance is excellent and the finish satisfies all relevant Fire Officer requirements. NyMet is resistant to solvents and therefore most forms of graffiti remain on the surface and can be easily removed without affecting the coating. NyMet Range NyMet is generally applied as a semi gloss finish and is available in an exclusive range of metallics together with black and white as the primary range of options. Standard BS or RAL colours are also offered and even special solid colours or metallics can be formulated upon request. Natural Hardwoods icon offers a contemporary selection of factory polished and lacquered Hardwood handrails. Other species can be considered upon request and all Hardwoods used for icon handrails are supplied from sustainably managed sources. Stainless Steel The Stainless Steel icon system is produced in 304 grade for internal use and 316 grade for external applications. A refined, brushed satin finish is directionally applied to most components whereas tubes are radially polished and certain castings are glass bead blasted. Winner of countless Industry accolades including the prestigious Civic Trust Award, Chiswick Park is the masterplan of developer Stanhope, comprising 12 office buildings laid out around an urban park at the western end of Chiswick High Road, west London. Designed by Richard Rogers Partnership, the scheme addresses the desire of companies to attract and retain key employees with the logic that if people enjoy work, they produce better work, which in turn creates a better business. The immaculately detailed buildings surround a central lake and an impressive range of communal facilities are provided including a health club, swimming pool, café and open-air performance area. Unlike most office developments the park is open to the public and the gardens play regular host to a wide array of outdoor social events. The average build period for the six completed offices was achieved with remarkable speed and efficiency, taking only 36 weeks including category A finishes. 37
