5 What does it mean to be a designer at Tarkett? What were the inspirations behind Tarkett s new Laminate range? We ve drawn our inspirations from several sources. Looking at different countries and interior trends, but also our customers lifestyles. The natural beauty of wood played an important role in the creation of the items, but also the influence of craftsmanship, which is so important to create a classic wood design. Effects like a white, mat oiling or gentle saw marks show the combination of nature and crafts But laminate is also a fantastic material for breaking the rules. It is really great to show the patina of materials but also to develop a brand different product or create something completely new by mixing old and new. Every time you look at materials like old doors, fences or even cobblestones you think about how to make it as a laminate floor. A really big source of inspiration is also developments in furniture, fabrics, wallpaper and paint colours. Because, in the end, all these elements have to fit together to create a good interior design. Pretty City Trend Retro Now Trend We are always on the lookout for what s new. It s an amazing job. Materials should be unique with outstanding structures and pattern, mostly colourful and always witty. Ceremony House Trend What are the main trends you have identified? There are four main trends that we see over the coming years. The first one is called Ceremony House and is all about luxury and extraordinariness. This luxury can also be seen in small details like metallic accents or velvet upholstery. Decoration styles are rich and bold, heavy fabrics and dark wood are mixed with classic furniture. The perfect style for people who like timeless interiors and precious things around them. Another important trend which has developed over the years is called Retro Now. Here we see a comeback of crafts, reclaimed items and reinvention of a warm and friendly past. Old designs are coming back with a twist, like larger scales in the pattern or fresh colours and are mixed with new items. This urban trend allows followers to mix everything and it leads to a fresh interior where everything is blended together. For example, they are manufactured in a PEFC/FSC-certified plant, using 85% natural, renewable material sourced from carefully managed forests. The wood and raw materials we use in our production are handled in a responsible manner.our plant is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council, License Code FSC-C011297)and PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification, PEFC/ ) certified. 10 Sustainability At Tarkett, we do not see sustainability as a constraint. Instead, it inspires us to think afresh in everything we do. We develop resource-efficient products that are designed to be reused and recycled with the minimum impact on the environment over their lifetime. In essence, it s about doing the right thing from the start. Sustainability PEOPLE FRIENDLY SPACES We use no materials that might pose a risk to the indoor living environment and during recycling. Blue Angel Certification The German Government s label for Environmentally Friendly products and services. The Federal Environment Agency sets specific standards for products and services regarding 4 main aspects: saving resources, especially saving water, climate friendly and health conscious. Blue Angel certification shows that our laminate respects all these. See here our closed-loop sustainability approach scheme. How is this translated for our Laminate products and production? Good indoor air quality Low VOC emissions Tarkett laminate has extremely low VOC emissions as also demonstrated by our Ü certification. The German National Technical Approval has measured our laminate VOC (volatile organic components) emissions and has found that they are well below the limit established by the norm DIN EN 14041: GOOD MATERIALS RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP Clean product to install and maintain The glue-less nature of our laminate floors makes it a clean product to install and its maintenance requires no chemicals. Our laminate products are made of 84% natural materials, mostly wood. The wood and raw materials we use in our production are handled in a sustainable manner. Our plant is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified. And the wood we use is PEFC certified, we do follow-up its origin. We also purchase our wood in a radius of 250 km from the factory, from well managed forests having a positive impact on CO 2 emissions (less transport > less emissions). At Laminate Park (our laminate plant), close to Saarbrucken, Germany, we aim at minimizing our waste and upcycling our manufacturing waste. We follow strict norms to ensure we use proper processes and methods: both ISO and ISO are used to continuously improve our energy management. We have our own water treatment system. It means that no waste/polluted water from the production site flows into the public sewage systems. We have also reduced, between 2014 and 2015 our water consumption from 6.2 to 5.1 l / m². We also have our own energy production plant on site. The majority of our production waste is re-used in the production of our energy. For example, 66% of all energy consumed is produced by recycling sawdust and wooden chips, which are a renewable energy source. The hot gas and steam produced by our energy plant is used in the wood fiber process production. REUSE AND RECYCLED At the end of its life-cycle, laminate flooring can be reused or recycled as an energy source; it is totally combustible and can be incinerated without dangerous emissions.
