3 Course Description While it is exciting to see enthusiasm for large and tall timber building concepts among building designers, what does it actually take to efficiently engineer and build these structures? How can a mass timber office building be cost-competitive with steel or concrete, while still maintaining elegance and quality? This session will use real projects as a means to explore practical considerations in structural engineering, 3D, manufacturing, logistics and installation. Projects will include the Cavender Office building in San Antonio, Texas, currently under construction, as well as T3 Atlanta, the largest mass timber building completed in the US to date.

4 Learning Objectives 1. Discuss design considerations necessary to achieve economical multi-story mass timber buildings. 2. Identify structural opportunities for mass timber systems. 3. Explore potential impacts of erection techniques and prefabrication on mass timber designs. 4. Discuss dowel-laminated timber (DLT) and how it differs from other mass timber products.
