Walt Disney's RM-1 Lunar Reconnaissance Craft The RM-1 Lunar Reconnaissance Craft was the first spacecraft designed to be built in orbit with modular components, specifically jettisoned pieces of the "Man in Space Ship" also featured in this section. The craft was intended to accelerate to escape velocity, loop once around the moon where its crew would take photos in preparation for an eventual lunar landing, then return to Earth where it would rendezvous with the SS-1 Space Station. The conical "aerospike" contained a shielded nuclear reactor that supplied the ship with power during its flight. The projection on the ship's underside is a detachable "bottle-suit," a one-man EVA vehicle. The ship was only seen in Walt Disney s Man in Space series but the design was based on factual scientific principles revolving around the work of Dr. Wernher Von Braun himself. The scale & dimensions are based off the 1/67 Strombecker/Glencoe kit. (Many thanks to Fantastic Plastic s website for the info) You will need the following items: 1. PDF reader software 2. Computer Printer, (Color), with 8 ½ x11 media carriage 3. 8 ½ x11 bond copy paper 4. 8 ½ x11 card stock paper (65 lb) 5. Clear drying PVA Glue 6. Clear drying Glue Stick 7. Hobby Knife 8. Scissors 9. Straight edge, (For cutting guide). Prepare for your build by doing the following steps: 1. Plot/print the Parts in the PDF file. 2. Plot/print with the fit to page feature turned off. 3. Cut parts out on a cutting surface, (i.e. cutting board or mat). This protects the table and prolongs the life of your knife blade. Steps for Build: 1. Cut out and roll part 1 into a cylindrical shape with the printed surface on the outside. Score the rear side of the teeth on the end of part Cut out part 2 and glue to the back, unprinted side of part 1. Glue the other end of part 1 to the front of part 2, forming a cylinder. 3. Cut out parts 3 and 4 and glue part 4 to the rear of part 3 forming a slight conical shaped endcap. 4. Fold the teeth on the end of the part 1 cylinder inward to 45 degrees and glue part 3 to this end with the teeth on the inside of the endcap. 5. Cut out two sets of parts 5, 6 and 7. Score the rear side of the teeth on both sides of the two part 5 s. glue the two part 5 s into donuts and bend over the teeth 90 degrees. 6. Glue part 6 to one side of part 5 followed by part 7 on the opposite side of part 5. Fold the tabs on part 7 inward into the donut.

7. When completed as shown below, you should have two identical assemblies. Fusilage Radiator Rings 8. Slip the two ring assemblies over the front, open end of the rear fuselage (part 1) as shown and glue into position. Be sure to slip on the rings with the inner tabs of part 7 over the fuselage first so they are inside the donut as shown below. This edge to here This edge to here 9. Cut out parts 32, 33, 34 and 35. Note that part 32 has a blue circle extending past the left edge of the part. Glue part 33 to the rear of the opposing, right edge of part Roll part 32 into a semi-cylindrical form and glue the edge with the blue circle to the exposed side part 33. The blue circle should extend over the cutline. Be sure to glue this down as well to display the ventral porthole properly. 11. Tightly roll and glue parts 34 and 35 to the inside bottom and top edges of part 32 as shown below. Align the dotted lines on the tabs with the edges of the cylinder and match the angled ends with the ends of part 33. R- 12. Cut out parts 36, 37 and 38. Assemble these similar to the previous assembly. Note that there is no rear tab piece to install.

13. Glue the part 36 assembly to the part 32 assembly, aligning the black strip on top and the join line on the bottom as shown. R Cut out parts 39 and 40. Roll part 39 into a conical form and glue part 40 to the inside of part Cut out parts 46 through 50. Cut three short vertical slits at the bottom of part 46 on the cut lines and roll part 46 into a cylinder. Glue part 47 to the inside of part 46 to complete the tube. 16. Roll part 48 into a tapered cylinder. Glue part 49 to the inside of part 48 to complete the tapered tube. 17. Glue part 50 to the small end of part 48 with the gray face outward. 18. Put glue on the two tabs at the rear of part 48 and insert into the UNCUT end of part 46, lining up the seams. Cut and open as shown Part 46 Part 48 Part Glue this assembly into the part 39 assembly, inserting it through the large rear opening as shown below. Place glue here before inserting into nosecone Insert fully into nosecone from the rear before gluing on nuclear reactor spike. Make sure it is aligned straight. 20. Make sure the spike is straight and true. Set aside to dry. 21. Cut out parts 42 and 43. Roll part 42 into a conical shape and glue part 43 to the inside of the cone. 22. Cut out parts 44 and 45. Score the tabs on the rear side of part 44. Roll part 44 into a dish shape and glue part 45 to the inside of the dish. 23. Fold the tabs on part 44 inward, add glue to the tabs and glue part 44 to part 42 as shown below. 24. Slide the Nuclear Reactor Spike (part 44/45) over the front of the part 46/50 assembly and position the rear of the dish to the line on part 46. Take care not to invert or cave in the rear dish. Glue into place.

25. When dry, glue this assembly to the front (small) end of the forward fuselage created in step 13. R Glue this assembly to the front, open end of the rear fuselage assembly, created in step 8, lining up the seams on the bottom of the assemblies. 27. Cut out, score and fold the canopy, part 41 as shown below. R-1 Fold all tabs underneath Folded tabs Fold tabs inward and glue behind front screen 28. Position the canopy as shown, using the small dots on the top of the fuselage as reference points and glue down as shown below. Be sure the side tabs are folded fully underneath and glued down to the fuselage. R Decision time I have included two options for the bottle suit. Docked or free-flying. If you wish to have the bottle suit free flying, use the docking port ring parts found on page 1 and glue this to the underside of the fuselage behind the radiator rings. There are small locating marks showing the position of the docking port. If you want to have the bottle suit removable, you will need to cut out a circle where the docking ring goes to fit the upper part of the bottle suit. I did not create a cone to go inside of the cut area for this. If you want to make one, go ahead. I gave you one and one half bottle suits with the intent of having one mounted and a second one free flying alongside the ship. If you wish to do this also, use the docking collar, part 1b, included in page 13.

30. Cut out and assemble the bottle suit as shown below. Bottle Suit Install #3 around #4 before installing #8. Install #14 after installing #10. Glue #8 at four equal points around #3 and #4. Parts are optional for free-flying version. Otherwise, install assembly from 1 down into ring on bottom of fuselage replacing part 1 with parts 1b and 1c b Docked Configuration Free-Flying Configuration Print 5 copies of page 3 and 2 copies of page 4. These are the propellant tanks. 32. Cut out five sets of parts 9 and 10. Score the back side of the upper and lower tabs in line with the straight edges. Roll part 9 with the tabs at the ends of the cylinder. Glue part 10 to the rear side of part 9 and join the other edge to complete the cylinder. 33. Do the same for two sets of parts 15 and Cut out 2 each of parts 11 through 14. Roll part 11 into a dish shape and glue part 12 to the inside of the dish. 35. Glue the tabs of part 13 to the inside of the dish, centering the part over the hole as shown. 36. Glue part 14 to the outside of the dish, plugging the hold to make it flush as shown. Part 13 Part 12 Part 14 View from Inside of the Dish 37. Bend the tabs on both ends of part 11 inward, apply glue to the tabs and glue the dish to the end of the cylinder as shown. Do this on both ends.

38. Repeat steps six more times to get seven complete propellant tanks. Two tanks will have the text USA on them. 39. Cut out 14 pieces each of parts 27 and 28. These will require regular, 20 lb. paper. The thicker stuff is just too hard to roll this tight. 40. Glue each part 28, joiner, as shown below. These are very small so take your time and don t cuss me out too much. e c b a Cut out these areas f b d 41. Roll each part 27 into tubes and glue the white strip to the rear of the other end of the tube. 42. Using the part 28 joiners, assemble the part 26 tubes to create the Front Ring as shown. Part 27 Part 28 a Glue "b" over "a", "d" over "c" and "f" over "e' Glue these tabs Typical segment assembly. Note, If you can think of a better way to do this, please let me know. 43. Do the same thing with parts 28, 29 and 30. When complete, you will have a Front Ring and two Rear Fuel Rings, one small and one large diameter. 44. Cut out the Fuel Intermix Conduit parts 22 through Roll part 22 into a tube and glue the white strip to the inside of the opposite end. 46. Roll both part 23 s and glue the white strip to the inside of the opposite ends. 47. On part 25, score the back of the upper and lower tabs. Roll part 25 and glue the white strip to the inside of the opposite end. 48. Fold the tabs inward and glue the two part 26 s to the top and bottom of the cylinder as shown. Fold tabs inward before gluing Part 25 Parts 26 on Top & Bottom 49. Carefully cut out the two circles with the red X s on part 25. Slide part 22 through the two openings in part 25 and position part 25 centered on the marks on part 22. DO NOT GLUE YET. 50. Score, fold and glue the two parts 24 as shown. Glue here

51. Assemble the parts created in steps 45 through 50 as shown below. Add two part 62 s to the top of part 25 as shown. Step 1 Short end goes down Step 2 22 Slip tube through holes before gluing on end risers Part 62 Part 25 Intermix Conduit Detail 26 on Top & Bottom 52. Making sure that the end parts 23 are vertical, glue part 25 into place, ensuring that it is flat, as shown above. 53. Cut out two parts 64 and laminate them to cardboard. Slip these over the rear fuselage and line up with the dotted lines as shown. Glue into place making sure the vertical line at the bottom lines up with the glue seam on the fuselage. "USA" "USA" Line up on dotted lines R-1 Place vertical lines at seam 54. Using the reference drawings on pages 14, 15 and 16; assemble the propellant tanks, rear fuel rings and front support ring as shown. Glue the propellant tanks to the part 64 support rings first, taking care to align the USA text as shown.. Then glue on the front support ring and rear fuel rings into place. 55. Make sure that page 6 is printed on the back of page 5 and the gray square is lined up behind the rocket motor frame in the upper left quadrant of the page. There are corner marks to show where the gray square should be. 56. Cut out part 16. Cut out the areas with the red X marks. Score all marked lines and fold as shown on page 15. Glue the framework together as shown Cut out parts Roll parts 17 and 18 and glue the white tabs to the opposite ends creating conical shapes. 58. Glue the tabs on large end of part 17 to the large end of part 18, creating a rough sphere. 59. Roll part 19 and glue the tab to the opposite end, creating a collar. 60. Glue the tabs of part 18 to the inside of the collar, part 19.

61. On part 20, cut the inner white tabbed area to separate the tabs. Roll part 20 into a conical shape with the gray finish outside. Glue the long tab on the end to the opposite end creating a cone with a gray outer side and white inner side. 62. Glue the tabs on the small end of the cone to the inside of the collar, part 19 as shown above. 63. Roll part 21 into a conical shape with the gray finish on the inside this time. 64. Glue the long tab on the end to the opposite end creating another cone, but this time, with the gray finish on the inside of the cone. 65.
