NW Michigan Woodturners Regular Meeting, July 8, 2017 Next regular meeting, Saturday August 12, 2017 at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District at 880 Parsons Road, Traverse City, MI. Meeting convened at 9:00 by President Lyle Jamieson. 22 members and guests attending. Rolls Chuck Vernon Coffee Chuck Vernon Bring Back???? Demonstration Lyle Jamieson Guests: Norm Dill's grandchildren Torrey and Katie Cookman and their mother. In reference to a question about internet connectivity for possible remote, live video demonstrations, John Sheets is talking with the school to see if we can get an Ethernet connection into the shop area, thus giving us sufficient band width and speed for live video. There is no decision yet on that issue. The Traverse City Library is offering us their display cabinets from October 1 to 31 to exhibit our work. The displays are quite large, and we need a wide variety and number of pieces to properly fill it. Owen Toomey is our coordinator for this event, and needs our pieces by September 15. A reminder. Our regular September 9 th meeting will be replaced by a paid demonstration by Mark Gardner. The all day demonstration will be open to members at a cost of $40, which includes snacks and lunch. Sunday and Monday the 10 th and 11 th will be hands on learning guided by Mark at Lyle's studio, at a cost of $75 per attendee. While the registration deadline has passed, there may still be space open for both the demonstration and the hands-on workshops. Call Lyle (231) to take advantage of this great opportunity. There is plenty of room at the demonstration, and several slots still available for the hands-on workshops on Sunday and Monday. Upcoming demonstrations: Mark Gardner will be here demonstrating his hollow form and embellishment techniques in September.
Dave Rife will be doing the October demonstration, which is still a mystery. Chuck Vernon will be demonstrating inside out turning in November. Please step right up and volunteer to demonstrate for December, January, February and beyond. It is a great confidence builder. No one throws tomatoes in our club, so come on and show us how you turn your favorite pieces. AAW news and information: 2017 National Symposium in Kansas City, Missouri: 1,121 members attended; Norm Dill, Lyle Jamieson, and Kris Roberts from our club were among the attendees. Lyle was mostly in the vendor area with his booth. Kris and his wife met several members of his other club, the Dakota Woodturners, also in attendance. 550 or more public and/or guests toured the instant gallery, displays, exhibitions, and vender area There were nearly 1,000 items displayed in the instant gallery and exhibition/gallery areas. $2,770 was raised by sales of the Empty Bowls donated for charity 148 boxes were donated to the Beads of Courage program 1,469 lathe raffle tickets were sold; Peter Vandemere of West Olive, MI won the 3520 Powermatic, and Dana Hayden of Vandalia, MO won the Jet Midi Lathe and stand. As usual, the Annual Chapter Meeting was held at the Symposium. 57 members and officers representing 50 chapters were in attendance. The AAW Board of Directors presented accomplishments of the last year, and plans for the coming year. Among the priorities for the coming year, the Board is working toward: 1) a fully developed demonstrator directory tool, 2) enhanced self-guided learning resources of demonstrator skills, 3) support for training of demonstration skills at the chapter and regional levels, 4) support for chapter mentors with new teaching/coaching materials, 5) to better support experienced turners who want to become professional turners and sell their work, and 6) a new AAW-branded video series of turning tips. For items 2, 3, and 4 AAW is looking to chapters for volunteers to assist in these initiatives, so if you are interested, contact the AAW office in St. Paul, Minnesota.
One of the very spirited topics of discussion was the Board's New Gen 50% Dues Discount Program. Attendees were overwhelming in favor of continuing the program. More than 300 chapters recruited a total of 900 new AAW members from this program. The Board will continue to study the result and retainment, and decide whether to offer/continue the program or not. Special notice: Fractal Burning, also known as Lichtenberg Burning. AAW has come out with a policy regarding this new and VERY DANGEROUS PRACTICE of embellishing wood. It states: There has been as least one death directly associated with the practice, and several injuries. Don't be one. Have you visited the AAW website lately? The home page offers direct links to several good videos, including 2 by our president, Lyle Jamieson. The web site is a wonderful resource of woodturning knowledge, including among many other things, an extensive listing and links to AAW vetted turning technique videos. The Bring Back It is the policy of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) that the process known as Fractal Burning is prohibited from being used in any AAW-sponsored events, including regional and national symposia, and that AAWchartered chapters are strongly urged to refrain from demonstrating or featuring the process in chapter events. Further, the process of Fractal Burning shall not be featured in any written or online AAW publication, except for within articles that warn against its use. AAW publications will not accept advertisements for any products or supplies directly related to the process.
Gary Perkins brought in another offering; a spalted cherry bowl with turquoise in-lace and a bit of crack filling. He was taking no chances this time, and refrained from buying another ticket. If you remember, he brought and won the Bring Back last month. This month, the Bring Back was won by Roland Etland from Grand Rapids. I seem to remember that someone volunteered to step in for Roland and bring something for August. Tool Talk John Sheets brought in a chain (saw) sharpening tool/jig from Stihl, that not only holds the round file at the right angle, but also has a flat file to plane off the rakers to proper height. It was pointed out that sharpening the teeth without adjusting the rakers can result in less cutting ability for the chain. Show and Share Owen Toomey maple bowl with checks, which he discussed Torrey Cookman (Norms grandson) showed a curly maple box which won him an AAW Award, and ash bowl
Katie Cookman showed a curly maple weed pot that she turned with Grandpas guidance (Norm Dill) BJ Harmon showed a wooden egg and egg cup that he turned in response to Kris' March demo
Chuck Vernon showed an insideout pepper grinder and discussed its construction. He will be demonstrating this technique in November
Bill Schlink showed a lidded finial box alaskan yellow cedar and a natural edged winged bowl of the same wood
Norm Dill showed two ash bowls with burned ring embellishments Gary Perkins showed a spalted oak bowl with turquoise inlace Chuck McLaughlin showed a lidded box with carving and aniline dye embellishment
Dave Rife showed four lidded boxes, 2 with finials, one cylindrical, and one with in-lay around the lid
John Sheets showed two crotch bowls of walnut, showing flame. Kris Roberts (me) showed some of the in-progress seam rippers he is turning for the TAG Quilting Group Sale in late July. He uses both his own method, and that shown in American Woodturner by Bob Rosand. As of this writing, he has completed 24, and will know by the August meeting how they were received.
- Rounded (bark) side to the head stock, and sawn side to the tail stock. Meeting Demonstration John Sheets Natural Edged Bowl John first talked about the woods he likes to turn with natural edged. Cherry, wet or dry. And then talked about mounting the half log blanks. Demonstrating, - Turn the corners off until round. - Use a laser pointer to adjust the high corners and sides to approximate bilateral uniformity (i.e. get the points and sides to about the same levels. That means
reorienting the blank between centers until achieved. - Begin refining the shape of the underside of the bowl. John sets up a tenon at this point for chucking the blank for further shaping of the underside and initial hollowing. For finish turning, John always uses a glue block mounting for greater stability. John now reverses the blank into the self-centering chuck, after
which he refines the underside shape, and begins rough hollowing of the bowl. Before he starts hollowing, he drills down the center point to establish maximum depth. When he hollows out to the bottom of the drill hole, he is at his approximate bowl depth. Now he hogs out the bowl with bevel push cuts from the far side of the lathe. Sounds strange when written, but you are essentially doing a normal push cut from middle out to the side (from the side of the lathe away from you). This lets the tool cut with more support from the wood grain. John goes for a uniform rough turned thickness, then takes the bowl off and soaks it for 4-5 hours in denatured alcohol, after which he sets it out to dry to a dull grey for 45 minutes to an hour. He then wraps the outside in paper, tapes the rim, and sets it upside down on a grill shelf for 2 weeks. This wrapping and taping slows down air movement and drying to prevent cracking. For finish turning of the dried blank, he mounts in a jam chucking orientation, finds the
center point of the bottom with the tail stock (hopefully you left that little point there when you finished roughing), and then trues up the bottom to a slightly concaved shape for mounting on a glue block. He prepares the glue block similarly with a slight concave surface, then drills an indentation in the middle with a forstner bit to allow a place for the hump left from the tail stock center point. Hey, you still need that center point later for cleaning up the base. The strength comes from that outer glue face of the base/block, not the center, so don't waste a bunch of glue there. After a bit of set time, John mounts up the bowl and first sprays the bark edge with polyurethane to both stabilize and keep dust from impregnating the bark. Now he puts a line of cyanoacrylate glue around the perimeter of the base, and applies accelerator to the glue block face. Now start on the inside, rounding out any warping that occurred during drying, but don't try for final thickness yet.
the tool in contact with the tool rest. Your back hand is the one that guides and directs the cut. Keep that back hand as far back on the tool handle as possible, as then movements with that hand translates to much smaller movements of the cutting edge, which is more forgiving of mistakes. Finish refining the outside shape with pull cuts (bevel riding) and shear scraping. Now work the inside of the first 2-3 inches of the rim to final thickness, using the bevel only rub to find the top of the bark rim, then roll the tool to start the cut and use a bevel riding push cut to work down the side. Make sure to line up the bevel before starting the cut, then use a very slow pace down the cut face. Your front hand doesn't do much more than keep Once the middle of the wall and bottom are shaped and thicknessed to your satisfaction (gouges and scrapers are both accepted and used), sand to remove all tool marks. John generally starts with 80-grit and moves up the grits (without skipping) to 320 or 400. John uses a 2 power sander with the lathe off for this.
When he is done inside, he takes the bowl off and reverses it onto a jam chuck to finish off the bottom so it sits flat, or embellishes with grooves, etc. Then sand the outside and apply the preferred finish. Thank You Kris Roberts for a great job of taking photos and notes for the Northwestern Michigan Woodturners news letter. Wood Thank you John, for a very thorough and well explained demonstration. Respectfully submitted, Kris Roberts, Secretary Thank You Those who furnished turned items for the display table I say thank you, the items are beautiful You are a true group of craftsmen Dave Rife has a friend that has had some logging done. If anyone wants firewood or even some to turn, please contact Dave. The location is just before Bingham Road toward Suttons s Bay, and is cut and carry
Northwestern Michigan Woodturners will host Mark Gardner September 9th, 2017 for a one day demonstration, followed by 2 one day hands on workshops. Don t miss this terrific opportunity to see and learn from one of the best in creative Woodturning. Mark's award winning work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and art centers around the country. He has an impressive teaching resume!
